Une nouvelle Joker …
Cassie est une jeune femme travaillant dans un modeste coffee shop, sans amie, sans conviction qui a l’air assez perdue. Ce ne sont pourtant que des apparences ! Cassie est en fait aussi intelligente que rusée, séduisante que calculatrice et mène une double vie dès que la nuit tombe. C’était une jeune femme pleine d’avenir jusqu’à un certain événement qui la bouleversa à jamais. Une rencontre inattendue va alors lui donner la chance de racheter les torts de son passé … ou n’est-ce que ce qu’elle croit ?
Thriller audacieux, provocateur et d’actualité, « Promising Young Woman » est le premier long-métrage de la scénariste et réalisatrice Emerald Fennell qui remporta l’Oscar du Meilleur Scénario et le BAFTA du meilleur film britannique. C’est un film dur qui traite d’un sujet d’actualité notamment en France mais dans un style totalement démesuré. Le sujet du film et son personnage principal restent un mystère progressivement dévoilé au fil des énigmes d’une intrigue qui comporte de nombreux retournements de situation tous de moins en moins prévisibles pour finir sur une conclusion explosive. Quelle fin ! On ne s’en remet pas tout de suite !
Le film est porté par l’excellente Carey Mulligan (Drive ; The Dig) qui joue ici un rôle de composition qui restera certainement un moment clé de sa carrière, notamment aux côtés de Bo Burnham et Alison Brie avec également le retour sur nos écrans de Clancy Brown et Alfred Molina. Ce premier film est une magnifique réussite et s’avère très prometteur pour le futur de la réalisatrice déjà abordée par les studios de comics pour écrire les adaptations de « Zatana » pour DC et du très bon « Nemesis » pour Marvel.

She was a young woman with a bright future until a certain event changed her forever. An unexpected encounter will give her the chance to redeem the wrongs of her past… or is that only what she thinks?
A bold, provocative and timely thriller, « Promising Young Woman » is the feature film debut of writer/director Emerald Fennell, who won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay and the BAFTA for Best British Film. It’s a tough film that deals with a topical issue but in a totally outrageous style. The topic of the film and its main character remain a mystery progressively unveiled through the enigmas of a plot that includes many twists and turns, all less and less predictable, to ultimately reach an explosive conclusion. What a pay-off! We don’t get over it right away!
