Le duo Matt Damon & Casey Affleck est de retour pour une comédie mêlant braquage qui tourne mal et action décalée dans ce film streaming réalisé par Doug Liman et disponible sur Apple TV+. L’une des deux stars co-produit le film avec Ben Affleck, quand le second co-écrit lui le film avec Chuck Maclean. L’alchimie entre les deux amis d’enfance fonctionne toujours et en particulier quand le duo se mue en trio avec Hong Chau (The Whale ; The Menu ; Kinds of Kindness) qui apporte un contrepoids bienvenu aux côtés d’une distribution connue et talentueuse y compris dans des petits rôles (Alfred Molina, Ron Perlman, Ving Rhames, Toby Jones, Paul Walter Hauser).
C’est une comédie qui met en scène un duo de ratés mal assortis qui se retrouvent embarqués dans le vol des pots de vins qui auront servi à réélire une fois de plus le maire de Boston. On est sur un concept proche des films « Ocean’s » mais où tout va vite dérailler jusqu’à ce qu’ils se retrouvent en course-poursuite avec leur psychologue !
Mais plus qu’un film de braquage, c’est avant tout un film profondément ancré à Boston, réunissant des Bostoniens, où les différents accents de la ville foisonnent, et où l’humour local est roi. S’il y a bien de bons dialogues avec des comiques de situations, des scènes burlesques et un humour décalé, l’humour bostonien reste avant tout cynique et aux frontières de l’absurde. Et le décalage inhérent à ce style comique peine malheureusement à résonner au-delà de son propre public.
S’il y a bien un côté divertissant et même touchant par moments, le film manque cruellement de rythme pour ce genre d’intrigue mêlant humour, alchimie et spectacle. Au final « The Instigators » ce n’est pas vraiment ce mélange-là. On attend donc plus de rythme dans la première partie (un rythme qui s’enclenche trop tard avec le trio) et surtout plus de dynamisme sur l’ensemble de l’histoire. C’est au final une légère déception (sûrement due à des attentes inadéquates) pour une comédie entre amis qui aurait pu être plus captivante ou hilarante.

The chemistry between the two childhood friends still shines through, especially when the duo turns into a trio with Hong Chau (The Whale; The Menu; Kinds of Kindness) providing a welcome counterbalance alongside a well-known and talented cast, even in small roles (Alfred Molina, Ron Perlman, Ving Rhames, Toby Jones, Paul Walter Hauser).
This comedy features a pair of mismatched screw-ups who find themselves caught up in the theft of bribes used to re-elect Boston’s mayor once again. The concept is a bit like the “Ocean’s” films, but things quickly go off the rails until they find themselves in a car chase with their therapist!
But more than a heist film, this is above all a film deeply rooted in the Boston landscape, featuring Bostonians, where the city’s different accents flourish, and where local humor rules. While there’s plenty of good dialogue, situational comedy, slapstick and offbeat humor, Boston humor remains above all cynical and bordering on the absurd. And the quirkiness inherent in this style of humor unfortunately struggles to resonate beyond its own audience.
While the film is entertaining and even touching at times, it lacks the pace needed for this kind of intrigue, combining humor, chemistry and spectacle. In the end, “The Instigators” isn’t quite that mix. We expect more pace in the first part (a pace that starts a little too late with the trio) and, above all, more energy in the story as a whole. In the end, it’s a slight disappointment (surely due to inadequate expectations) for a buddy comedy that could have been more captivating or hilarious.
