Retour à l’animation pour l’univers des jouets Hasbro après une saga live-action plus que décevante (en particulier sous l’ère Michael Bay) malgré le ‘reboot’ de qualité opéré par Paramount avec « Bumblebee » (2018) mais sans vrai succès. Fini les histoires d’invasion de la planète Terre ou d’opposition entre les clans Autobots & Decepticons, ce nouvel opus revient aux origines de ce conflit à travers l’histoire de deux amis dénommés Orion Pax & D-16 qui deviendront les némésis Optimus Prime & Megatron. Plus non plus d’humains dans l’histoire, c’est donc un film centré sur la vie de ces robots sur leur planète dont les ressources naturelles s’épuisent et le gouvernement en place profite. C’est un film plus orienté pour enfants que le reste de la saga, mais qui propose néanmoins un scénario accessible à tous (y compris que vous soyez fan de l’univers, ou parfait néophyte) sur un fond de lutte des classes.
Réalisé par Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) et écrit par les scénaristes de « Ant-Man & the Wasp », « Transformers : Le Commencement » nous plonge dans une animation colorée, énergique et métallique pour nous faire découvrir la planète Cybertron aux côtés de ce groupe hétéroclite de personnages (avec les voix de Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm, et Laurence Fishburne en VO). L’intrigue repose une nouvelle fois sur un MacGuffin central assez simpliste mais captive néanmoins (et particulièrement dans les deux premiers actes) avec son ton humoristique et son développement de personnages avec en parallèle l’ascendance d’Optimus et l’évolution de Megatron sur le sentier de la vengeance.
Avec un troisième acte plus générique, « Transformers : le commencement » réussit un divertissement satisfaisant qui plaira surtout aux enfants et ravira par contre véritablement les fans de la franchise. S’il ne passe pas loin d’un vrai renouvellement de l’univers, il reste un film agréable et ludique avec de l’humour, de l’action et de l’émotion … très clairement l’un des meilleurs de la saga !

Hasbro‘s toy universe returns to animation after a more than disappointing live-action run (particularly under the Michael Bay era), despite Paramount‘s excellent but unsuccessful “Bumblebee” reboot (2018). Gone are the stories of the invasion of planet Earth or the fight between the Autobots & Decepticons factions; this new installment takes us back to the origins of this conflict through the story of two friends named Orion Pax & D-16, who will become the nemeses Optimus Prime & Megatron. There are no longer any humans in the story either, so it’s a film focusing on the lives of these robots on their planet, whose natural resources are running out and the government in power is exploiting them. It’s a film more geared towards children than the rest of the saga, but it nonetheless offers a story for everyone (whether you’re a fan of the universe, or a complete newcomer) set against a backdrop of class struggle.
“Transformers One” is directed by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) and written by the screenwriters of “Ant-Man & the Wasp”, and features colorful, vibrant, metallic animation as we explore the planet Cybertron alongside this ragtag group of characters (voiced by Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm and Laurence Fishburne). Once again, the plot is based on a rather simplistic key MacGuffin, but nonetheless manages to be engaging (particularly in the first two acts), with its humorous tone and character development, paralleling Optimus’s ascendancy and Megatron’s evolution along the path of vengeance.
With a third act that is by the numbers, “Transformers One” delivers decent entertainment that will appeal above all to children, but will also truly delight fans of the franchise. While it comes close to revitalizing the universe, it’s still a fun, entertaining film with plenty of humor, action and emotion… clearly one of the saga’s best!
