Cette nouvelle série Star Wars nous plonge dans une époque encore inconnue de l’univers officiel, à savoir un siècle avant les films, dans une ère de paix, un âge d’or des Jedi où les Sith ne sont qu’un vague souvenir pour tous, où l’Ordre n’est pas encore enfermé dans ses protocoles et sa concentration vers le centre du pouvoir comme on peut le voir plus tard dans l’univers de George Lucas. Elle offre un renouveau bienvenu, dans le cadre d’une intrigue mystérieuse construite sur une série de meurtres par une jeune fille cherchant à se venger des crimes qu’auraient commis les Jedi dans son enfance …
Le titre « Acolyte » fait référence aux aspirants que les Sith (Maître ou Apprenti) prennent sous leurs ailes pour accomplir leur mission ou trahir leur confrère. La série promettait donc également un point de vue innovant en nous plongeant au cœur des manipulations et des manigances des Sith encore tapis dans l’ombre à cette époque, sous l’œil des grands méchants habituels de la saga donc ! Malheureusement ce point de vue, n’est que partiel et la série se limite à une introduction de ces prémices pourtant si intrigantes. Elle se concentre à la place, plus sur les échecs d’un groupe de Jedi sur une double chronologie causant bien des problèmes à l’Ordre et au duo de personnages principaux.
C’est une intrigue intéressante mais pauvrement développée. La faute d’une part à un format très court d’épisodes et de saison (qui semble être obligatoire chez Disney+, histoire de pouvoir toujours les critiquer et donc faire parler, qui sait ?), à une structure narrative quelque peu bancale, et surtout à un scénario assez prévisible (dommage pour un thriller) et souvent maladroit ou incohérent. Les acteurs sont pour le coup moins en tort que leurs dialogues et la mise en scène particulièrement plate et limitée dans l’espace. A noter tout de même, de très bonnes chorégraphies martiales, et un fond suffisamment riche pour nous garder en éveil jusqu’à la fin – en espérant que la saison 2 exploitera mieux ce fort potentiel de la série.

This new Star Wars show takes us into an era still uncharted in the official universe, that is a century before the films, in a peaceful time, a golden age of the Jedi where the Sith are but a faint memory for all, where the Order is not yet trapped in its protocols and power-centered focus as seen later in George Lucas’s world. It offers a welcome breath of fresh air, in a mystery plot built around a series of murders by a young girl seeking revenge for the crimes allegedly committed by the Jedi in her childhood…
The “Acolyte” title refers to the aspiring disciples that the Sith (Master or Apprentice) take under their wing to carry out their mission or betray their peer. The series therefore also promised an original point of view, taking us right to the heart of the schemes and maneuvers of the Sith, who were still lurking in the shadows at the time, and thus telling the story through the eyes of the saga’s usual big bads! Unfortunately, this point of view is only partially explored, and the series restricts itself to an introduction to these intriguing premises. Instead, it focuses more on the failings of a group of Jedi on a dual timeline, creating major troubles for the Order and the duo of main characters.
This is an interesting storyline, but poorly developed. On the one hand, this is due to a very short episode and season format (which seems to be a requirement at Disney+, perhaps so we can always criticize them and therefore get people talking about it, who knows?), to a somewhat shaky narrative structure, and above all to a rather predictable (a pity for a thriller) and often clumsy or incoherent script. The actors are less to blame than their dialogue, and the direction that is particularly flat and limited in space. Still, the martial arts choreography is very well done, and the background is rich enough to keep us watching until the end – hoping that season 2 will make better use of the series’ strong potential.
