partie de son travail \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9vocation du drame qui a endeuill\u00e9 \u00e0 jamais sa vie et tout son pays natal le Cambodge : le g\u00e9nocide des Khmers Rouges et de leur guide supr\u00eame Pol Pot de 1975 \u00e0 1978. Depuis trente ans il a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 de nombreux documentaires sur cette p\u00e9riode cruelle et traumatisante, il ajoute aujourd\u2019hui une nouvelle pierre \u00e0 son \u0153uvre de m\u00e9moire en repassant cette fois \u00e0 la fiction sous un angle particulier : celui de la propagande et de l\u2019aveuglement d\u2019une partie de l\u2019Occident, et en particulier des intellectuels de Gauche.<\/p><p>Le film s\u2019inspire tr\u00e8s librement du r\u00e9cit de la journaliste du <em>Washington Post<\/em> Elizabeth Becker qui r\u00e9ussit en 1978 avec un coll\u00e8gue et un \u00e9crivain marxiste \u00e0 p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans les fronti\u00e8res ferm\u00e9es de ce qui s\u2019appelait alors le Kampuch\u00e9a d\u00e9mocratique et \u00e0 obtenir un entretien exclusif avec \u2018Fr\u00e8re num\u00e9ro 1\u2019 alias Pol Pot. Rithy Panh transpose ici cette histoire avec trois personnages fran\u00e7ais \u2013 jou\u00e9s par Ir\u00e8ne Jacob, Cyril Gue\u00ef, et Gr\u00e9goire Colin. Ce changement lui permet de superposer \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de presse, la visite d\u2019une d\u00e9l\u00e9gation fran\u00e7aise du PCMLF en 1978, ainsi que de rappeler la formation universitaire fran\u00e7aise des hauts dignitaires du r\u00e9gime khmer.<\/p><p>Sous haute surveillance de l\u2019Angkar (l\u2019Organisation khmer), les trois invit\u00e9s fran\u00e7ais sont alors embarqu\u00e9s dans un v\u00e9ritable circuit balis\u00e9 au service de la propagande d\u2019\u00c9tat visant \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des hommes nouveaux \u00e0 partir de la classe des paysans pauvres. Les personnages se positionnent alors chacun diff\u00e9remment face \u00e0 cet \u00e9cran de fum\u00e9e, les journalistes s\u2019insurgeant contre cette dissimulation de la nature totalitaire du r\u00e9gime, et l\u2019intellectuel engag\u00e9 refusant de voir la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 en face\u00a0: une population bris\u00e9e sans le moindre espace de libert\u00e9. Dans une sc\u00e8ne hautement symbolique, les soldats khmers bandent ainsi les yeux de l\u2019intellectuel fran\u00e7ais qui s\u2019av\u00e8re incapable d\u2019identifier ce que l\u2019on d\u00e9crirait en anglais comme \u2018the elephant in the room\u2019.<\/p><p>Rithy Panh choisit la suggestion et le contournement pour distiller l\u2019horreur dans nos esprits. Il ne met ainsi en sc\u00e8ne la violence qu\u2019\u00e0 travers une s\u00e9rie d\u2019indices, de non-dits, et de hors-champs. Elle se traduit dans l\u2019absence de vie d\u2019un pays \u00e0 l\u2019arr\u00eat, dans les visages bl\u00eames et terrifi\u00e9s, et dans le silence de toute une population (accentu\u00e9 par la quasi-absence de musique). La violence n\u2019est ainsi que sugg\u00e9r\u00e9e indirectement \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019un Phnom Penh nocturne et silencieux, purg\u00e9 de ses habitants et de son pass\u00e9\u00a0; ou des s\u00e9quences en maquettes faisant appel \u00e0 notre imagination.<\/p><p>C\u2019est en effet une \u0153uvre prot\u00e9iforme alternant des sc\u00e8nes jou\u00e9es avec les acteurs, \u00e0 des images d\u2019archives du r\u00e9gime en noir et blanc, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 ces sc\u00e8nes de miniatures tourn\u00e9es avec des figurines d\u2019argile (une technique que le cin\u00e9aste cambodgien avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 utilis\u00e9e dans ses documentaires). C\u2019est un r\u00e9cit sobre, tr\u00e8s lent, \u00e0 la mise en sc\u00e8ne quasi-documentaire qui propose de belles id\u00e9es de cin\u00e9ma et de beaux plans (\u00e0 l\u2019image du dictateur de l\u2019ombre) mais qui manque malheureusement d\u2019enjeux et souffre alors de longueurs. Over the past thirty years, he has made many documentaries about this cruel and traumatic era, and today he is adding a new chapter to his memorial work, this time returning to fiction from a particular perspective: that of the propaganda and blindness of some Westerners, especially the left-wing intelligentsia.<\/p><p>The film is loosely based on the story of Washington Post journalist Elizabeth Becker, who in 1978, along with a colleague and a Marxist writer, managed to get inside the closed borders of what was then known as Democratic Kampuchea and earn an exclusive interview with &lsquo;First Brother&rsquo; aka Pol Pot. Rithy Panh here adapts this story with three French characters \u2013 played by Ir\u00e8ne Jacob, Cyril Gue\u00ef, and Gr\u00e9goire Colin. This change enables him to overlap the journalistic story with the visit of a French delegation of the PCMLF (French Marxist-Leninist communist party) in 1978, as well as pointing out the French university background of the Khmer regime&rsquo;s top officials.<\/p><p>Under the watchful eye of the Angkar (the Khmer Organization), the three French guests are taken on a true guided tour designed to promote state propaganda aimed at creating new men from the class of poor peasants. Each character then takes a different approach to this smokescreen, with the journalists protesting against this cover-up of the regime&rsquo;s totalitarian nature, and the politically engaged scholar refusing to face up to the reality of a broken population with no room for freedom whatsoever. In a highly symbolic scene, the Khmer soldiers thereby blindfold the French intellectual, who proves to be unable to identify what can only be described as &lsquo;the elephant in the room&rsquo;.<\/p><p>Rithy Panh chooses suggestion and circumvention to infuse our minds with horror. He only stages violence through a series of clues, unspoken words and out-of-frame situations. It is reflected in the lifelessness of a country at a standstill, in the pale, terrified faces, and in the silence of an entire population (further reinforced by the virtual absence of music). Violence is therefore only indirectly suggested like with the image of a silent, nocturnal Phnom Penh, cleansed of its inhabitants and its past; or with the miniature scenes that call on our imagination.<\/p><p>This is a multi-faceted film, alternating scenes with actors, black-and-white archival footage of the regime, and those miniature scenes shot with clay figurines (a technique the Cambodian filmmaker had already used in his documentaries). This is a quiet, slow-moving story, with a quasi-documentary style of direction that offers some nice cinematographic ideas and beautiful shots (such as the image of the shadowy dictator), but unfortunately lacks stakes and suffers from length. This is a political, historical and symbolic film that clearly could have been more captivating and powerful.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div
