2010 relan\u00e7ait avec grand succ\u00e8s l\u2019univers de \u00ab\u00a0la Plan\u00e8te des Singes\u00a0\u00bb, ce nouveau film vient s\u2019inscrire dans la continuit\u00e9 des trois pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents sur le parcours de C\u00e9sar, tout en ouvrant une voie nouvelle. Il n\u2019est donc pas indispensable d\u2019avoir vu les films de Rupert Wyatt et Matt Reeves avec Andy Serkis dans le r\u00f4le principal pour comprendre les \u00e9v\u00e9nements de ce nouvel opus. Dans cette nouvelle dynamique, la saga s\u2019offre un changement de sc\u00e9nariste et de r\u00e9alisateur avec respectivement Josh Friedman (Foundation\u00a0; La Guerre des Mondes\u00a0; Avatar IV) et Wes Ball surtout connu pour sa trilogie dystopique du \u00ab\u00a0Labyrinthe\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><p>La trilogie pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente avait non seulement impressionn\u00e9 tout le monde pour son r\u00e9cit politique et soci\u00e9tal novateur dans la saga, mais aussi \u2013 et surtout \u2013 pour la qualit\u00e9 de ses effets sp\u00e9ciaux. Ce nouvel opus est \u00e0 nouveau visuellement splendide avec des environnements qui rendent extr\u00eamement bien comme ces villes o\u00f9 la nature a repris avec force ses droits en m\u00ealant tournages en ext\u00e9rieur et effets sp\u00e9ciaux de grande qualit\u00e9. Mais bien \u00e9videmment, ce qui reste la marque de fabrique de cette saga, ce sont les singes avec ici en t\u00eate le chimpanz\u00e9 Noa jou\u00e9 par Owen Teague (\u00c7a). Les artistes de chez <em>W\u0113t\u0101 <\/em>(Le Seigneur des Anneaux\u00a0; Avatar) ont encore fait des merveilles avec l\u2019animation en performance capture o\u00f9 chaque singe est dot\u00e9 de sa propre identit\u00e9 traduisant le jeu des acteurs et les \u00e9motions des personnages.<\/p><p>Plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations apr\u00e8s la guerre de C\u00e9sar les singes r\u00e8gnent d\u00e9sormais sur la plan\u00e8te, les humains ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 rel\u00e9gu\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat sauvage, sans don du langage et vivant en retrait au point de n\u2019\u00eatre plus que des \u00e9chos de cette nouvelle soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 divis\u00e9e en communaut\u00e9s dont les us et coutumes varient, comme le clan des aigles de Noa \u00e0 travers lequel l\u2019on d\u00e9couvre ce nouveau monde dans le premier tiers du film \u2013 un d\u00e9but tr\u00e8s immersif nous pr\u00e9sentant habilement les personnages et le contexte. Le destin de Noa va alors croiser la route d\u2019un chef bonobo se la jouant empereur romain, et d\u2019une humaine \u2013 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e par Freya Allen (The Witcher) \u2013 pas comme ses semblables, qui peut parler, raisonner et cherche \u00e0 nuire aux oppresseurs simiesques.<\/p><p>Bien apr\u00e8s C\u00e9sar et les siens, leur r\u00e9volution est devenue une l\u00e9gende et il a \u00e9t\u00e9 immortalis\u00e9 en figure messianique. Ses enseignements ont perdur\u00e9 tout ce temps mais \u00e0 un prix\u00a0: la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration. Le principal sujet de ce nouveau film est ainsi la falsification de la foi, ou le d\u00e9tournement d\u2019un h\u00e9ritage \u00e0 ses propres fins. A cette \u00e9poque, plus personne ne se souvient r\u00e9ellement de C\u00e9sar, mais tous brandissent son nom. Certains comme Raka suivent ses paroles telle une v\u00e9n\u00e9ration divine d\u2019un culte ou d\u2019un Ordre, d\u2019autres comme Proximus les reprennent et les d\u00e9tournent pour leur propre pouvoir, quand d\u2019autres enfin n\u2019en ont \u00e0 ce stade m\u00eame pas entendu parler. Les enjeux de pouvoir des pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents opus ont donc abouti \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019un proph\u00e8te et \u00e0 un jeu de d\u00e9formation et de d\u00e9sinformation. Chacun poursuit ainsi son but au nom d\u2019un C\u00e9sar disparu, ce que l\u2019on voit encore beaucoup dans notre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 aujourd\u2019hui. Derri\u00e8re le film d\u2019aventure se cache donc une fable politique.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Le Nouveau Royaume\u00a0\u00bb aurait cependant pu aller plus loin dans le d\u00e9veloppement de cette nouvelle soci\u00e9t\u00e9 simiesque et ses divergences de points de vue, de culture et de pratiques avec un m\u00e9chant principal qui reste tr\u00e8s simple et primitif. Bien que son aspect primitif dans sa qu\u00eate de puissance, de contr\u00f4le et d\u2019esclavage au nom du peuple singe serve le propos du film sur les r\u00e9utilisations politiques des l\u00e9gendes et des valeurs. Il n\u2019est d\u2019ailleurs pas le vrai m\u00e9chant du film, ou en tout cas pas celui que la saga introduit comme la v\u00e9ritable (future) menace dans une dynamique qui cette fois devrait se concentrer sur la question de la cohabitation des singes et des humains comme deux esp\u00e8ces dominantes.<\/p><p>Les enjeux entourant les humains reprennent probablement un peu trop ceux des pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents films \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image de l\u2019intrigue g\u00e9n\u00e9rale assez pr\u00e9visible ou de certains d\u00e9cors qui ressemblent par moments au dernier de 2017. Mais dans l\u2019ensemble, m\u00eame si la fin aurait gagn\u00e9 \u2013 tout comme l\u2019ensemble des personnages \u2013 \u00e0 \u00eatre plus nuanc\u00e9e, \u00ab\u00a0Le Nouveau Royaume\u00a0\u00bb reste un blockbuster am\u00e9ricain de qualit\u00e9 introduisant une bonne base pour les suites \u00e0 venir. You don&rsquo;t need to have seen the films directed by Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves, starring Andy Serkis, to understand the events of this new installment. With this fresh start, the saga undergoes a change of screenwriter and director, respectively Josh Friedman (Foundation; War of the Worlds; Avatar IV) and Wes Ball, best known for his dystopian \u201cThe Maze Runner\u201d trilogy.<\/p><p>The previous trilogy not only blew everyone away with its innovative political and societal storytelling, but also \u2013 and above all \u2013 with the sheer quality of its special effects. This latest addition is once again visually stunning, with environments that look fantastic, such as the cities where nature has forcefully reclaimed its rights through a combination of location shooting and top-quality special effects. But of course, the hallmark of this saga are the apes, led here by chimpanzee Noa played by Owen Teague (\u00c7a). The artists at <em>W\u0113t\u0101<\/em> (Lord of the Rings; Avatar) once again worked wonders with performance capture animation where each ape is given its own identity conveying the actors&rsquo; performance and the characters&rsquo; emotions.<\/p><p>Several generations after Caesar&rsquo;s war, apes now rule the planet, humans having been reduced to the wild, lacking the ability to speak and living in seclusion to the point of being mere echoes of this new society. A society divided into communities with varying habits and customs, such as Noa&rsquo;s clan of eagles, through whom we discover this new world in the first third of the film \u2013 a highly immersive opening that deftly introduces us to the characters and setting. Noa&rsquo;s destiny then crosses paths with a bonobo overlord who fancies himself a Roman emperor, and a human \u2013 played by Freya Allen (The Witcher) \u2013 unlike any of her kind, who can speak, reason and seeks to undermine the ape oppressors.<\/p><p>Long after Caesar and his crew, their revolution became a legend and he was turned into an immortal messianic figure. His teachings have endured all this time, but at a cost: reclamation. The main theme of this new film is therefore the distortion of faith, or the twisting of a legacy to one&rsquo;s own ends. By this time, no one really remembers Caesar, but everyone is brandishing his name. Some, like Raka, follow his words like the divine worship of a cult, others, like Proximus, co-opt and divert them for their own power, while others haven&rsquo;t even heard of them. The power struggles of the previous installments have thus led to the birth of a prophet and a battle of distortion and disinformation. Everyone pursues their own goals in the name of a vanished Caesar, something we still see a lot of in our reality nowadays. Behind the adventure film hence lies a political fable.<\/p><p>However, \u201cKingdom\u201d could have gone further in developing this new ape society and its divergent viewpoints, cultures and traditions, with the main villain left very simple and primitive. Although his primitive aspect in his quest for power, control and slavery in the name of the ape nation supports the film&rsquo;s argument about the political repurposing of legends and values. He is not in fact the real villain of the film, or at least not the one the saga introduces as the true (future) threat in a process that this time should focus on the issue of the coexistence of apes and humans as two dominant species.<\/p><p>The stakes surrounding the humans are probably a little too similar to those of the previous films \u2013 just like the rather predictable overall plot as well as some of the settings, which at times remind us of 2017&rsquo;s latest movie. But overall, even if the ending could have used a little more nuance \u2013 as much as all the characters \u2013 \u201cKingdom\u201d remains a strong American blockbuster, providing a good foundation for future sequels. Less dramatic and moving, this newest addition nonetheless follows in the footsteps of the previous trilogy, and of a saga now 10 films strong that began in 1968 and clearly still has a bright future
