Une s\u00e9rie de cin\u00e9ma \u00e0 ne pas manquer\u00a0!<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Sh\u014dgun\u00a0\u00bb nous plonge en 1600 dans un Japon au bord de la guerre civile o\u00f9 un navire hollandais command\u00e9 par l\u2019Anglais John Blackthorne d\u00e9barque sur les c\u00f4tes de ces nouvelles terres pour y trouver non seulement un peuple civilis\u00e9, mais aussi les Portugais en affaires avec celui-ci. Apr\u00e8s la mort du leader imp\u00e9rial, le seigneur Yoshi Toranaga se retrouve menac\u00e9 de mort par ses rivaux du Conseil des R\u00e9gents. Le destin de ces deux figures sera alors inextricablement li\u00e9 \u00e0 celui de Toda Mariko, leur traductrice et myst\u00e9rieuse chr\u00e9tienne d\u2019une lign\u00e9e tomb\u00e9e en disgr\u00e2ce. Tout en servant son seigneur et la m\u00e9moire de sa lign\u00e9e, elle va devoir concilier sa relation avec l\u2019Anglais et son engagement envers la foi.<\/p><p>Cette s\u00e9rie limit\u00e9e adapte le best-seller de James Clavell de 1975 et r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 condenser son r\u00e9cit fleuve de pr\u00e8s de 1300 pages en 10 \u00e9pisodes. Plut\u00f4t que de se focaliser sur l\u2019exp\u00e9rience de l\u2019Anglais (ce qui aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s proche de l\u2019intrigue du \u00ab\u00a0Dernier Samoura\u00ef\u00a0\u00bb), les co-cr\u00e9ateurs Rachel Kondo et Justin Marks adoptent une approche globale autour de ces trois figures principales tout en d\u00e9veloppant une galerie de personnages secondaires nuanc\u00e9s. Chaque personnage y porte ses propres buts dans un contexte de tension et d\u2019all\u00e9geances aussi bien entre clans japonais pour le pouvoir que dans l\u2019exportation du conflit europ\u00e9en entre Protestants et Catholiques. C\u2019est un v\u00e9ritable jeu d\u2019\u00e9checs, une fresque politique, un r\u00e9cit tourn\u00e9 en l\u00e9gende autour de la foi, du sacrifice et de l\u2019ambition.<\/p><p>Les personnages de Clavell sont inspir\u00e9s de r\u00e9elles figures historiques dans un cadre romanc\u00e9 o\u00f9 les noms ont \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9s pour plus de libert\u00e9 narrative. Blackthorne renvoie ainsi \u00e0 William Adams, premier Anglais arriv\u00e9 au Japon peu avant la bataille de Sekigahara et l\u2019av\u00e8nement du shogunat d\u2019Edo. Blackthorne est ainsi la cible de tous mais aussi l\u2019objet de convoitise pour ce qu\u2019il repr\u00e9sente. C\u2019est un sauvage \u00e9tranger, certes, mais c\u2019est aussi un navigateur d\u2019exp\u00e9rience et un h\u00e9r\u00e9tique aux yeux de l\u2019\u00c9glise catholique avec qui certains seigneurs cultivent plus ou moins de relations. La victoire revient alors, non pas aux meilleurs combattants ou archers, mais \u00e0 ceux qui auront le mieux anticip\u00e9 et \u00e9valu\u00e9 leurs ennemis. L\u2019intrigue dense, mais pas si compliqu\u00e9e pour autant, m\u00eale respect, tradition et amour dans un jeu politique faits de subtils dialogues empreints d\u2019\u00e9lans po\u00e9tiques.<\/p><p>Avec des s\u00e9ries telles que \u00ab\u00a0Archer\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Atlanta\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0The Bear\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Fargo\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Sons of Anarchy\u00a0\u00bb ou encore \u00ab\u00a0Sur Ordre de Dieu\u00a0\u00bb, bref un palmar\u00e8s prestigieux, la cha\u00eene <em>FX<\/em> peut s\u2019apparenter \u00e0 la petite s\u0153ur de <em>HBO<\/em> en gage de qualit\u00e9 dans le paysage t\u00e9l\u00e9visuel am\u00e9ricain. Pour son nouveau gros projet, en cours depuis 2018, la cha\u00eene (pass\u00e9e sous propri\u00e9t\u00e9 <em>Disney<\/em> depuis, d\u2019o\u00f9 la diffusion de la s\u00e9rie sur <em>Disney+<\/em> en France) n\u2019a pas l\u00e9sin\u00e9 sur les moyens. Fresque historique ambitieuse, \u00ab\u00a0Sh\u014dgun\u00a0\u00bb est en effet port\u00e9e par un budget plus que cons\u00e9quent pour ressusciter une \u00e9poque ancestrale disparue, avec un impressionnant souci du d\u00e9tail et d\u2019authenticit\u00e9 dans les d\u00e9cors, les costumes, les postures, ou le vocabulaire. L\u2019immersion est alors imm\u00e9diate, facilit\u00e9e par le choix de dialogues bilingues en grande majorit\u00e9 en japonais (ce qui para\u00eet logique mais n\u2019est pas si courant pour une s\u00e9rie am\u00e9ricaine) ainsi qu\u2019en anglais (qui \u00e9tonnamment remplace le portugais). Outre la beaut\u00e9 des costumes et d\u00e9cors, le rythme de la s\u00e9rie lui laisse le temps pour de belles compositions de cadre savamment \u00e9clair\u00e9es aussi bien dans les sc\u00e8nes paisibles de dialogues ou de r\u00e9flexion que dans celles de combats parfois brutales et sanglantes. Rather than focusing on the Englishman&rsquo;s experience (which would have been very similar to \u201cThe Last Samurai\u201d plot), co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks take a holistic approach around these three main players, while developing an array of nuanced supporting characters. Each character is driven by their own goals, against a backdrop of tension and allegiances, whether between Japanese clans competing for power, or in the export of the European conflict between Protestants and Catholics. Blackthorne thus refers to William Adams, the first Englishman to arrive in Japan shortly before the Battle of Sekigahara and the rise of the Edo shogunate. He&rsquo;s a foreign savage, yes, but he&rsquo;s also an experienced sailor and a heretic in the eyes of the Catholic Church, with whom certain lords foster more or less close connections. Victory then belongs, not to the best swordsmen or archers, but to those who best anticipate and assess their enemies. The dense but not overly complicated plot blends respect, tradition and love in a political game made up of subtle dialogues infused with poetic flair.<\/p><p>With shows such as \u201cArcher\u201d, \u201cAtlanta\u201d, \u201cThe Bear\u201d, \u201cFargo\u201d, \u201cSons of Anarchy\u201d and \u201cUnder the banner of Heaven\u201d \u2013 in other words, a prestigious track record \u2013 the <em>FX<\/em> network can be considered <em>HBO<\/em>&lsquo;s little sister when it comes to guaranteeing quality in the American TV landscape. For its latest big production, underway since 2018, the channel (which has since come under <em>Disney<\/em> ownership, hence the series&rsquo; broadcast on <em>Hulu<\/em> in the US and <em>Disney+<\/em> worldwide) has spared no expense. As an ambitious historical drama, \u201cSh\u014dgun\u201d is driven by a massive budget to bring back to life a vanished ancestral era, with an impressive attention to detail and authenticity in sets, costumes, stance and vocabulary. Immersion then comes straight away, thanks to the choice of bilingual dialogue, the vast majority of which is in Japanese (which seems logical, but isn&rsquo;t so common for an American series) as well as English (which surprisingly stands in for Portuguese). In addition to the beauty of the costumes and sets, the pace of the series leaves plenty of time for beautiful frame compositions, skillfully lit both in the peaceful scenes of dialogue or contemplation and in the sometimes brutal and bloody combat scenes. All in all, this is a lavish and demanding show, also supported by an excellent Japanese cast featuring the quiet force of Hiroyuki Sanada, the riveting Anna Sawai (Monarch) as the Lady of Steel, and
