Mais aussi bien la dimension politique, qu\u2019\u00e9pique de cette \u0153uvre se r\u00e9v\u00e8lent trompeuses tant le nouveau film du romancier, sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisateur britannique Alex Garland (Ex Machina) se r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00eatre une \u0153uvre anti-guerre avant tout port\u00e9e sur le journalisme.<\/p><p>\u00c9crit durant les premiers mois de la pand\u00e9mie, soit avant l\u2019assaut du Capitole de janvier 2021, \u00ab\u00a0Civil War\u00a0\u00bb met en sc\u00e8ne la sombre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d\u2019un futur proche \u00e0 travers une repr\u00e9sentation r\u00e9aliste, froide, et percutante de la guerre. Ce n\u2019est pas une dystopie, c\u2019est un film de guerre au point de vue impartial avec un parti pris sur les conflits arm\u00e9s qui ne cherche aucunement \u00e0 glorifier la violence. Un film sur la d\u00e9shumanisation de la guerre. L\u2019accent est donc plut\u00f4t mis sur les aspects durs et traumatisants du conflit, montrant ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne pour ce qu\u2019il est, une trag\u00e9die, plus que pour quoi il se produit. Bien que spectaculaire dans sa mise en sc\u00e8ne, le film ne cherche pas le sensationnel. En nous faisant ressentir la violence de mani\u00e8re visc\u00e9rale, il ne nous pousse pas \u00e0 soutenir un camp ou un autre de sorte \u00e0 ce que personne (quel que soit son bord politique) ne puisse encourager un tel conflit \u2013 c\u2019est l\u00e0 tout le sens du film. Il d\u00e9tourne ainsi l\u2019attention des causes et racines de la guerre pour se concentrer sur un point de vue ext\u00e9rieur, celui du groupe de journalistes qui sont les protagonistes de cette histoire, car la vraie arme de ce film n&rsquo;est autre que l\u2019appareil photo.<\/p><p>L\u2019objectif du film est alors une interview convoit\u00e9e par une \u00e9quipe de reporters. C\u2019est un <em>road movie<\/em> dont le fil rouge devient la relation entre une photographe de guerre chevronn\u00e9e et sa coll\u00e8gue d\u00e9butante incarn\u00e9es par la premi\u00e8re h\u00e9ro\u00efne de Sofia Coppola et la derni\u00e8re en date, Kirsten Dunst &amp; Cailee Spaeny \u2013 aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Wagner Moura et Stephen McKinley Henderson \u2013, deux personnages que ce voyage \u00e0 travers les \u00c9tats-D\u00e9sunis d\u2019Am\u00e9rique va v\u00e9ritablement changer.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15318 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>\u201cOn t\u00e9moigne pour que les gens posent des questions.\u201d<\/p><p>C\u2019est dans cette r\u00e9plique que r\u00e9side la lecture d\u2019un film qui \u00e0 l\u2019image de son propos, ne cherche pas \u00e0 donner de le\u00e7ons mais encourage plut\u00f4t les spectateurs \u00e0 aborder l\u2019intrigue avec un esprit ouvert et \u00e0 s\u2019interroger eux-m\u00eames. C\u2019est un film sur l\u2019impartialit\u00e9 de la presse, qui questionne avant tout le sens de l\u2019information, la fonction du journalisme, et la neutralit\u00e9 de la retranscription des \u00e9v\u00e9nements. Il met en sc\u00e8ne des reporters photos dont le travail n\u2019est pas de traiter des questions \u00e9thiques inh\u00e9rentes au conflit, mais plut\u00f4t de l\u2019enregistrer le mieux possible\u00a0; nous interrogeant ainsi sur le pouvoir de l\u2019image, l\u2019absolue n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de pr\u00e9server un journalisme de terrain capturant le r\u00e9el, ainsi que sur la fronti\u00e8re entre cette n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 et la dimension artistique que repr\u00e9sente la photographie de guerre. \u00ab\u00a0Civil War\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019impose donc comme un hommage aux journalistes et photographes, en particulier Don McCullin et Lee Miller.<\/p><p>\u201cQuel genre d\u2019Am\u00e9ricains, vous \u00eates\u00a0?\u201d<\/p><p>Ce point de vue neutre laisse \u00e9videmment un flou id\u00e9ologique et contextuel dans la mesure o\u00f9 on ne sait pas vraiment ni quand, ni pourquoi, ni comment a d\u00e9but\u00e9 cette guerre. C\u2019est au public de d\u00e9cider. Bien qu\u2019il y ait quand m\u00eame quelques \u00e9l\u00e9ments de contextualisation politique, technologique, ou \u00e9conomique avec notamment un \u00e9tat des lieux succinct de la nation alors divis\u00e9e entre les \u00c9tats loyalistes, ceux du Nord-Ouest, l\u2019Alliance de Floride, et les Forces de l\u2019Ouest compos\u00e9es du Texas et de la Californie \u2013 ce qui peut appara\u00eetre \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue comme une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 improbable nous renvoyant \u00e0 l\u2019image m\u00eame de la guerre sur le sol occidental. Ce flou politique est prolong\u00e9 jusque dans les combats pour souligner la nature autoentretenue de la guerre. Lorsque la situation devient extr\u00eame, les raisons n\u2019importent plus, la guerre en est alors r\u00e9duite \u00e0 \u201cnous vs eux\u201d et on n\u2019en vient \u00e0 ne plus savoir pourquoi l\u2019on se bat. Le film ne nous laisse ainsi m\u00eame pas savoir qui tire sur qui ou pourquoi, et ne nous indique pas non plus dans quel camp, ni m\u00eame s\u2019il en a un, se trouve un soldat non identifi\u00e9 (Jesse Plemons) terrorisant nos protagonistes.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15324 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Cinquante millions de dollars de budget \u2026<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Civil War\u00a0\u00bb repr\u00e9sente \u00e0 ce jour la plus grosse production du studio ind\u00e9pendant \u00e0 grand succ\u00e8s de ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es <em>A24<\/em>, et ce budget cons\u00e9quent pour un film de cette gamme se ressent tant le film donne l\u2019impression de disposer de deux ou trois fois plus. Dans une approche naturaliste, les sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action ont \u00e9t\u00e9 film\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019aide de petites cam\u00e9ras portatives amplifiant la dimension visc\u00e9rale, immersive et r\u00e9aliste du film. Un r\u00e9alisme fait d\u2019incertitude pour l\u2019ensemble des personnages qui nous tient en haleine jusqu\u2019au bout. Alex Garland signe ici, sa mise en sc\u00e8ne la plus impressionnante, maintenant une tension continue tout en rendant \u00e0 la fois ce conflit spectaculaire \u2013 par une magnifique photographie \u2013 et traumatisant \u2013 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un fin travail de mixage son et un puissant jeu sur les silences. Comme souvent chez Garland, un rythme lent se met en place pour installer une atmosph\u00e8re, une image forte, symbolique ou surr\u00e9aliste refl\u00e9tant la nature m\u00eame du combat comme lors d\u2019un duel de snipers au milieu de d\u00e9corations de No\u00ebl laiss\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019abandon dans un d\u00e9cor bucolique. Certaines sc\u00e8nes se r\u00e9v\u00e8lent par ailleurs particuli\u00e8rement marquantes par leur violence, leur tension ou simplement la peur qui s\u2019en d\u00e9gage faisant de \u00ab\u00a0Civil War\u00a0\u00bb un film qu\u2019on n\u2019oublie pas.<\/p><p>Un film fort, \u00e9mouvant et magn\u00e9tique. But both the political and epic dimensions of this film prove deceptive, as the new film by British novelist, screenwriter and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) turns out to be an anti-war piece primarily about journalism.<\/p><p>Written during the first months of the pandemic, that is, before the assault on the Capitol in January 2021, \u201cCivil War\u201d depicts the grim reality of a near future through a cold, hard-hitting, realistic portrayal of war. This is not a dystopia, but a war film with an impartial point of view and a critical take on armed conflict that in no way seeks to glorify violence. It&rsquo;s a film about the dehumanization of war. The focus is therefore rather on the harsh, traumatic aspects of the conflict, depicting it for what it is \u2013 a tragedy \u2013 rather than for why it happens. Although spectacularly executed, the film is not driven by the spectacle. By making us feel the violence in a visceral way, it doesn&rsquo;t make us cheer for one side or the other, so that no one (regardless of political views) can root for such a conflict \u2013 that&rsquo;s precisely the point of the film. In this way, it keeps the focus away from the causes and roots of the war to instead take an external viewpoint, that of the group of journalists who are the protagonists of this story, because the real weapon of this film is none other than the camera.<\/p><p>The film&rsquo;s goal is then to get a highly sought-after interview from a team of reporters. It&rsquo;s a road movie whose main storyline becomes the relationship between a seasoned war photographer and her rookie colleague, played by Sofia Coppola&rsquo;s first and latest heroines, Kirsten Dunst &amp; Cailee Spaeny \u2013 alongside Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson \u2013 two deeply changed characters by their journey across the Divided States of America.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15318 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_998-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>\u2018We record so that other people ask.\u2019<\/p><p>This line is the key to a film which, like its subject matter, does not preach, but rather urges viewers to look at it with an open mind, and to make their own inquiries. It&rsquo;s a film about the impartiality of the press, questioning above all the definition of information, the role of journalism, and the neutrality of reporting. It features photo reporters whose job is not to address the ethical issues inherent in this conflict, but rather to record it as best they can; thereby questioning the power of the picture, the absolute necessity of preserving on-the-ground journalism that captures reality, and the boundary between this necessity and the artistic edge that war photography brings. \u201cCivil War\u201d is therefore a tribute to journalists and photographers, in particular Don McCullin and Lee Miller.<\/p><p>\u2018What kind of American are you?\u2019<\/p><p>This unbiased point of view obviously leaves an ideological and contextual blur, insofar as we don&rsquo;t really know when, why or how this war began. It&rsquo;s up to the audience to decide. Although there are a few elements of political, technological and economic contextualization, including a brief overview of the nation divided between the Loyalist States, the Northwest, the Florida Alliance and the Western Forces made up of Texas and California \u2013 which at first glance may seem an unlikely reality, reflecting the very essence of war on Western soil. This political vagueness is extended right into the fighting, to underline the self-perpetuating nature of the war. When things get extreme, the reasons no longer matter, the war is boiled down to \u201cus vs. them\u201d, and we no longer know what we&rsquo;re fighting for. As a result, the film doesn&rsquo;t even tell us who&rsquo;s shooting at whom or why, nor does it tell us which side an unidentified soldier (Jesse Plemons) terrorizing our protagonists is on, or even if he has one.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15324 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_2299-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>A fifty-million-dollar budget&#8230;<\/p><p>\u201cCivil War\u201d is currently the biggest production to date from the highly successful independent studio A24, and its sizeable budget for a film of this calibre is palpable as the film feels like it had two or three times as much budget. In a naturalistic approach, the action scenes were filmed using small hand-held cameras, enhancing the film&rsquo;s visceral, immersive and realistic dimension. A sense of realism built on uncertainty for all the characters, which keeps us on the edge of our seats right to the end. This is Alex Garland&rsquo;s most impressive directorial effort, building sustained tension while at the same time depicting the conflict as both breathtaking \u2013 thanks to gorgeous cinematography \u2013 and shocking &#8211; thanks to subtle sound mixing and a powerful use of silence. As is often the case with Garland&rsquo;s work, a slow pace is set up to create an atmosphere, a strong, symbolic or surreal imagery that reflects the very nature of the battle, as during a sniper duel in the midst of Christmas decorations left abandoned in a bucolic environment. Some scenes are also particularly striking for their violence, their tension or simply the fear that emanates from them, making \u201cCivil War\u201d a film you won&rsquo;t forget.<\/p><p>This is a powerful, moving and magnetic picture. A film about conflict and its reporting that challenges us to see it apolitically.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl
