affiches de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, le nouveau film de Ry\u016bsuke Hamaguchi \u00e0 qui l\u2019on doit notamment les films \u00ab\u00a0Senses\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Contes du hasard et autres fantaisies\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Drive my car\u00a0\u00bb, se distingue \u00e9videmment pour ses qualit\u00e9s contemplatives avec ses plans picturaux, mais aussi pour sa fin \u00e9nigmatique ouverte aux interpr\u00e9tations.<\/p><p>Prim\u00e9 \u00e0 Berlin, \u00e0 Cannes, aux Oscars et maintenant \u00e0 Venise pour ce nouveau film qui repart de la Mostra 2023 avec un Lion d\u2019Argent pour le Grand Prix du jury, le cin\u00e9aste japonais signe une nouvelle fois une \u0153uvre singuli\u00e8re qui percute les genres et nous offre un voyage \u00e0 travers un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me \u2013 naturel, m\u00e9taphorique, ou narratif \u2026 \u00ab\u00a0Le mal n\u2019existe pas\u00a0\u00bb est en quelque sorte un po\u00e8me symphonique \u00e0 la conclusion dissonante car le champ lexical musical est ici primordial tant les compositions d\u2019Eiko Ishibashi sont au c\u0153ur de ce film n\u00e9 de la collaboration entre la compositrice japonaise et le cin\u00e9aste sur un concert accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019images muettes. Ce long-m\u00e9trage r\u00e9utilise ainsi la mati\u00e8re musicale et visuelle de leur pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent projet. Ici, la musique pr\u00e9c\u00e8de donc l\u2019intrigue de cette exp\u00e9rience cin\u00e9matographique \u00e0 voir comme un voyage sensoriel plus que comme une pure fable \u00e9cologique ou m\u00e9taphysique.<\/p><p>La singularit\u00e9 de l\u2019\u0153uvre est de ce fait, notamment port\u00e9e par l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance de sa musique avec ses ruptures de ton et de rythme. Les coupes brusques dans sa partition ou au montage de certaines sc\u00e8nes servent ainsi d\u2019avertissement implicite\u00a0: le climat peut \u00eatre trompeur, tout a une fin, et parfois brutale. Derri\u00e8re ses somptueuses images et son esth\u00e9tique paisible, \u00ab\u00a0Le mal n\u2019existe pas\u00a0\u00bb porte donc une violence enfouie, s\u00e8che, impr\u00e9visible \u00e0 l\u2019image du silence de deuil ou du pass\u00e9 entourant le protagoniste, ou des coupes musicales, ou encore des coups de feu sporadiques. La cam\u00e9ra contemplative semble alors murmurer avec le vent, fr\u00e9mir avec les arbres, ou s\u2019\u00e9couler avec l\u2019eau pure de la rivi\u00e8re. Et cela demande du temps et donc des plans, souvent fixes, qui s\u2019attardent. Tout le premier quart du film se limite ainsi \u00e0 une exploration minutieuse des lieux, presque sans dialogues. Cette lenteur rend m\u00eame les conversations les plus banales, significatives et la mise en sc\u00e8ne plus expressive. Un long travelling lat\u00e9ral observe par exemple \u00e0 distance le protagoniste marchant dans une for\u00eat enneig\u00e9e puis dispara\u00eetre derri\u00e8re un talus pour r\u00e9appara\u00eetre avec sa fille sur son dos, synth\u00e9tisant ainsi la parfaite harmonie du duo familial dans son environnement.<\/p><p>Le rythme et la pr\u00e9cision de la mise en sc\u00e8ne nous font rentrer dans le cadre pour y d\u00e9celer les moindres d\u00e9tails, car ce sont eux, ainsi que les motifs \u00e9tablis et le ressenti des sc\u00e8nes qui comptent plus que l\u2019intrigue. Comme dans ses pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents films, bien que ce soit dans une plus faible mesure que dans \u00ab\u00a0Drive my car\u00a0\u00bb par exemple, Hamaguchi cr\u00e9e une relation avec le spectateur via sa mise en sc\u00e8ne. Il instaure un cadre, des codes, des motifs, bref une syntaxe pour y d\u00e9celer des cl\u00e9s de lecture en fonction des choix de cadrage, de musique ou autres. Le dernier plan vient ainsi boucler la boucle avec une r\u00e9p\u00e9tition du traveling d\u2019introduction dont les \u00e9l\u00e9ments sc\u00e9nographiques sont alors invers\u00e9s par le basculement de l\u2019histoire.<\/p><p>Mettant en sc\u00e8ne un p\u00e8re et sa fille, c\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019un modeste homme \u00e0 tout faire \u2013 jou\u00e9 par un remarquable acteur non professionnel \u2013 d\u2019une communaut\u00e9 rurale non loin de Tokyo et fin connaisseur de la r\u00e9gion qui se retrouve menac\u00e9e par un projet de camping luxueux. C\u2019est une histoire d\u2019\u00e9quilibre, il y est question d\u2019harmonie, du vivre-ensemble, et de sa fragilit\u00e9. Au c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit se trouve une rupture d\u2019\u00e9quilibre, aussi bien social que naturel, mais \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle intime. Le mal du titre vient-il alors de la ville ou de la nature ? Cette confrontation initiale est rapidement dissoute en pla\u00e7ant les personnages du m\u00eame c\u00f4t\u00e9, donnant un premier \u00e9clairage sur le titre avant d\u2019\u00eatre contrebalanc\u00e9 par un r\u00e9cit myst\u00e9rieux, po\u00e9tique et polys\u00e9mique jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa conclusion.<\/p><p>Une conclusion on ne peut plus \u00e9nigmatique dont l\u2019issue s\u00e8che et dont la signification obs\u00e8de longtemps apr\u00e8s le g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de fin. Surprenant, d\u00e9routant et frappant, le d\u00e9nouement fait ainsi basculer la dynamique du film et reste grand ouvert \u00e0 l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation. This feature film draws on the musical and visual material of their previous project. Here, the music precedes the plot of this cinematic experience, which is more a sensory journey than a purely ecological or metaphysical tale.<\/p><p>The film&rsquo;s singularity is therefore driven by the independence of its music, with its breaks in tone and rhythm. The sudden cuts in its score or in the editing of certain scenes offer an implicit warning: the mood can be deceitful, everything has an end, and sometimes a brutal one. Behind its gorgeous images and peaceful aesthetic, \u201cEvil does not exist\u201d conveys a buried, dry, unpredictable violence, like the silence of mourning or the past surrounding the protagonist, as well as the musical cuts or sporadic gunshots. Beauty and tenderness coexist here with the imminence of danger!<\/p><p>The film opens with something more of an overture than an introduction, with a long tracking shot into the sky through the treetops, setting both the film&rsquo;s distinctive pace and its natural setting. The contemplative camera then seems to whisper with the wind, quiver with the trees, or flow with the pure water of the river. And this requires time, and therefore lingering, often still shots. The entire first quarter of the film is in fact devoted to a meticulous exploration of the surroundings, with almost no dialogue. This slowness makes even the most banal conversations meaningful, and the staging more meaningful. As in his previous films, albeit to a lesser extent than in \u201cDrive my car\u201d, for example, Hamaguchi creates a relationship with the viewer through his <em>mise en sc\u00e8ne<\/em>. He creates a framework, codes, patterns \u2013 in short, a language that can be used to decipher the meaning of the film, depending on the framing, music and other choices made. The final shot thus brings the story full circle, repeating the opening tracking shot, though its scenographic features are inverted by the story&rsquo;s dramatic shift.<\/p><p>Featuring a father and daughter, this is the story of a modest handyman \u2013 played by a remarkable non-professional actor \u2013 from a rural community not far from Tokyo, and a fine connoisseur of the area, that finds itself threatened by a fancy camping project. The balance of the area is thereby threatened by city dwellers at the end of their tether, oblivious to the upheaval they are about to cause&#8230;<\/p><p>However, the film cannot be summed up in this opposition between urban and rural, as this starting point is quickly transcended in favor of a global reflection on our relationship with nature and with others. It&rsquo;s a story of balance, of harmony, of living together, and of its fragility. At the heart of the story lies a disruption of balance, both social and natural, but on the intimate scale. Does the evil of the title come from the city or from nature? This initial conflict is quickly fade away by putting the characters on the same side, shedding some light on the title before being counterbalanced by a mysterious, poetic and polysemic narrative right up to its finale.<\/p><p>This is a highly enigmatic and gripping ending whose meaning haunts long after the credits have rolled. Surprising, disconcerting and striking, the conclusion reverses the axis of the film, leaving it wide open to interpretation. Less powerful and moving than his previous films, Hamaguchi&rsquo;s latest nevertheless foils our expectations, and confirms his mastery of both style and substance.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div
