Oui et non\u00a0: reposant \u00e0 la fois sur des poncifs et sur un concept, \u00ab\u00a0Immacul\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb est un long-m\u00e9trage \u00e0 la fois travaill\u00e9, efficace et un peu trop lisse. Si l\u2019intrigue donne une impression de d\u00e9j\u00e0-vu (une s\u0153ur novice d\u00e9cide de s\u2019installer dans un superbe couvent italien dont les murs portent les stigmates d\u2019une ambiance pesante et interdite), son traitement pr\u00e9sente souvent des \u00e9carts narratifs originaux et une esth\u00e9tique r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie.<\/p><p>En effet riche d\u2019une mise en sc\u00e8ne propre, de musiques, d\u00e9cors et costumes immersifs, et d\u2019actrices et figurantes convaincantes, le film est globalement de qualit\u00e9 sur la forme. De m\u00eame que sur le fond\u00a0: l\u2019histoire aborde des th\u00e9matiques diverses, allant de l\u2019anti-cl\u00e9ricalisme \u00e0 la miraculosit\u00e9 en passant par le sectarisme, le tout en usant de divers sous-genres horrifiques \u2013 dont le gore. Notons aussi\u00a0le v\u00e9ritable bilinguisme italien\/anglais du film, qui pour une fois ne tombe pas dans les clich\u00e9s culturels.<\/p><p>N\u00e9anmoins, malgr\u00e9 ces points forts t\u00e9moignant d\u2019une vraie recherche \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019instar de la performance de Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria\u00a0; Reality\u00a0; Tout sauf toi), \u2013 \u00ab\u00a0Immacul\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb laisse un arri\u00e8re-go\u00fbt d\u2019inabouti. \u00c0 commencer par quelques ellipses et simplifications sc\u00e9naristiques presque grossi\u00e8res qui font retomber le film dans de la simple \u2018nonnesploitation\u2019, ou \u00e0 l\u2019inverse dans du gore gratuit et\/ou pas assez pouss\u00e9. Quelques personnages secondaires comme S\u0153ur Guen auraient sans doute m\u00e9rit\u00e9 plus de place, notamment pour rehausser la fibre f\u00e9ministe de l\u2019intrigue. Yes and no: based on both clich\u00e9s and concept, \u201cImmaculate\u201d is a film that is at once elaborate, successful and a little too smooth. While the plot gives the feeling of <em>d\u00e9j\u00e0-vu<\/em> (a novice nun decides to move into a superb Italian convent whose walls bear the scars of a heavy, forbidding atmosphere), its approach often features original narrative departures and a carefully thought-out aesthetic.<\/p><p>With its neat direction, immersive music, sets and costumes, and convincing actresses and extras, the film&rsquo;s overall quality is high. The story tackles a wide range of themes, from anti-clericalism to miraculousness and sectarianism, and makes use of various horrific sub-genres \u2013 including gore. Also noteworthy is the film&rsquo;s genuine Italian\/English bilingualism, which for once avoids cultural clich\u00e9s.<\/p><p>Nevertheless, despite these strong points testifying to genuine dedication &#8211; much like the performance of Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria; Reality; Anyone But You) \u2013 \u201cImmaculate\u201d leaves an aftertaste of unfinished business. Starting with a few ellipses and almost crude script oversimplifications, the film falls back into simple Nunsploitation, or conversely into free and\/or underdeveloped gore. Some of the secondary characters, such as Sister Guen, would undoubtedly have deserved more attention, particularly to enhance the feminist aspect of the plot. It&rsquo;s also regrettable that these mysterious, furtive sisters in red masks, who embody an obscurantism that goes beyond faith, are not given greater prominence.<\/p><p>Surely overrated, \u201cImmaculate\u201d remains an entertaining horror film that also questions the boundary between the quest for spirituality and the notion of scientific progress, all in the same perspective of emancipation, whether feminine, religious or both.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Axel
