C\u2019est la rentr\u00e9e des \u00e9coles mais aussi celle du cin\u00e9ma fran\u00e7ais apr\u00e8s un \u00e9t\u00e9 domin\u00e9 par les divertissements am\u00e9ricains. C\u2019est donc lors d\u2019une rentr\u00e9e scolaire que s\u2019ouvre le nouveau film de Thomas Lilti apr\u00e8s sa trilogie m\u00e9dicale (Hippocrate\u00a0; M\u00e9decin de campagne\u00a0; Premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e) avec un jeune professeur rempla\u00e7ant sans exp\u00e9rience symboliquement nomm\u00e9 Benjamin rapidement confront\u00e9 aux affres du m\u00e9tier de professeur. L\u2019ex-m\u00e9decin devenu sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisateur signe ici une chronique d\u2019un groupe d\u2019enseignants de coll\u00e8ge dans une galerie de personnages attachants.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s avoir d\u00e9crit un milieu qu\u2019il connaissait personnellement pour l\u2019avoir exp\u00e9riment\u00e9, Thomas Lilti s\u2019attaque cette fois \u00e0 un univers que l\u2019on a tous connu et qui fait donc appel \u00e0 notre m\u00e9moire collective\u00a0: l\u2019\u00e9ducation nationale. Une fois encore, il aborde la fiction par le r\u00e9el et met en sc\u00e8ne une profession garante d\u2019une mission universelle (comme celle de sauver des vies dans ses trois pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents films)\u00a0: la transmission du savoir. Une responsabilit\u00e9 aujourd\u2019hui trop peu consid\u00e9r\u00e9e alors que c\u2019est le socle de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Il signe ainsi un portrait r\u00e9aliste des femmes et des hommes qui nous accompagnent ou accompagnent nos enfants dans l\u2019enfance. Et comme dans tous les m\u00e9tiers d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, les enseignants sont confront\u00e9s \u00e0 des dysfonctionnements et \u00e0 leurs propres contradictions et difficult\u00e9s. Comme dans le monde de la Sant\u00e9, Lilti cherche alors \u00e0 interroger la question de l\u2019engagement \u00e0 travers un m\u00e9tier\u00a0: o\u00f9 puisent-ils leur motivation\u00a0? quels \u00e9l\u00e8ves ont-ils \u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0? quels parents sont-ils devenus\u00a0? et qu\u2019en est-il de leur vocation\u00a0?<\/p><p>En cela \u00ab\u00a0Un m\u00e9tier s\u00e9rieux\u00a0\u00bb ne traite pas d\u2019une m\u00e9thode p\u00e9dagogique sp\u00e9cifique ou d\u2019une situation particuli\u00e8rement difficile, il montre plut\u00f4t ce que \u2018\u00eatre\u2019 professeur repr\u00e9sente dans la vie. Le film se d\u00e9roule ainsi dans un coll\u00e8ge \u2018normal\u2019 de r\u00e9gion parisienne, ce n\u2019est ni une classe difficile ni une \u00e9cole d\u2019\u00e9lite, la population y est socialement m\u00e9lang\u00e9e, et les personnages \u00e0 vocation universelle. Un cadre peu mis en sc\u00e8ne au cin\u00e9ma. Lilti y fait vivre un esprit de groupe en maintenant un certain \u00e9quilibre entre des moments de camaraderie et de crises allant des probl\u00e8mes du quotidien aux incongruit\u00e9s du syst\u00e8me. C\u2019est un aper\u00e7u sur un groupe de professeurs sur l\u2019ensemble d\u2019une ann\u00e9e scolaire qui se concentre finalement plus sur les personnes en tant que professeurs \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole et en dehors \u2013 que sur le c\u0153ur du m\u00e9tier et son bonheur inh\u00e9rent, \u00e0 savoir la relation avec l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve et le processus de transmission et d\u2019apprentissage. Paradoxalement pour un film sur l\u2019\u00e9cole, il y a ainsi peu de sc\u00e8nes en classe.<\/p><p>C\u2019est avant tout un film de groupe narrativement \u00e9clat\u00e9 qui met en sc\u00e8ne une bande de sept professeurs dont quatre ou cinq personnages principaux (bien que la fronti\u00e8re avec les secondaires soit assez fine) et o\u00f9 par cons\u00e9quent chaque personnage n\u2019est qu\u2019assez peu d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 au profit d\u2019une relation de groupe et d\u2019une atmosph\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale. Le r\u00e9alisateur s\u2019entoure de ses acteurs habituels, \u00e0 commencer par Vincent Lacoste et son inalt\u00e9rable candeur qui repr\u00e9sente un peu son double, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Fran\u00e7ois Cluzet, Louise Bourgoin, William Lebghil et Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos nouvelle recrue de la bande \u00e0 Lilti. Ils incarnent des professeurs aux origines sociales et personnalit\u00e9s diff\u00e9rentes qui traversent diverses \u00e9tapes de leur carri\u00e8re et les partagent au contact de leurs coll\u00e8gues. Les profils et les disparit\u00e9s entre ces enseignants sont d\u2019ailleurs induites tout en nuances, d\u2019un quai oppos\u00e9 de RER \u00e0 un changement de coupe de cheveux symboliques \u2026<\/p><p>Si le titre pourrait induire une intrigue plus engag\u00e9e, c\u2019est probablement son film le moins fort politiquement bien qu\u2019il traite de certains sujets inh\u00e9rents \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9ducation nationale et au m\u00e9tier de professeur. Les enjeux ne sont pas l\u00e0. Ce n\u2019est pas une charge politique, ni une d\u00e9monstration \u00e9clatante de la force du corps enseignant. C\u2019est un portrait multiple parfaitement cr\u00e9dible, tendre et juste au ton l\u00e9ger qui m\u00eale des sc\u00e8nes chaleureuses et comiques \u00e0 d\u2019autres plus graves et \u2018s\u00e9rieuses\u2019. C\u2019est un film nostalgique qui a le don de nous ramener \u00e0 nos ann\u00e9es coll\u00e8ge. It&rsquo;s back to school time, but also back to French cinema after a summer of American entertainment. Thomas Lilti&rsquo;s new film, following on from his medical trilogy (Hippocrate; M\u00e9decin de campagne; Premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e), opens at the start of a new school year, with a young, inexperienced substitute teacher symbolically named Benjamin, quickly facing the challenges of teaching. Here, the ex-physician-turned-screenwriter-director chronicles a group of middle-school teachers through a cast of endearing characters.<\/p><p>After depicting a world he knew personally first-hand, Thomas Lilti now tackles a world we&rsquo;ve all experienced, and which therefore speaks to our collective memory: the education system. Once again, he approaches fiction through reality, portraying a profession with a universal mission (like saving lives in his three previous movies): the sharing of knowledge. It&rsquo;s a responsibility that&rsquo;s too little appreciated today, even though it&rsquo;s the foundation of society. As such, he creates a realistic portrait of the men and women who guide us or our children through childhood. And, as in all professions of public interest, teachers are confronted with failings and their own contradictions and difficulties. As in the world of health care, Lilti explores the question of commitment through a profession: where do they find their motivation? what kind of children have they been? what kind of parents have they become? and what about their calling?<\/p><p>In this respect, \u201cUn m\u00e9tier s\u00e9rieux\u201d is not about a specific teaching method or a particularly difficult situation, but rather illustrates what \u00ab\u00a0being\u00a0\u00bb a teacher means in real life. The film is set in a \u00ab\u00a0regular\u00a0\u00bb secondary school in the Paris area, neither a difficult class nor an elite school, with a socially mixed population and characters with a universal outlook. It&rsquo;s a milieu that&rsquo;s rarely found in cinema. Lilti brings a group spirit to life, maintaining a certain balance between moments of camaraderie and crises ranging from everyday problems to the incongruities of the system. ENG 2\/2:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It&rsquo;s a snapshot of a group of teachers over the course of a whole school year that ultimately focuses more on the people as teachers &#8211; in and out of school &#8211; than on the essence of the profession and its inherent joy, which lies in the relationship with the pupils and the process of transmission and learning. Paradoxically for a film about school, there are very few classroom scenes.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s above all a narratively dispersed ensemble movie featuring a band of seven teachers, four or five of whom are main characters (although the frontier with the supporting cast is quite fine), and where each character is consequently only slightly developed in favor of a group relationship and an overall atmosphere. The director brings back his usual cast, starting with Vincent Lacoste and his unwavering candor as kind of his own alter ego, alongside Fran\u00e7ois Cluzet, Louise Bourgoin, William Lebghil and Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos, the newest addition to Lilti&rsquo;s gang. They play teachers from different social backgrounds and with different personalities, who go through various stages of their careers and share them with their colleagues. The profiles and disparities between these teachers are conveyed with nuance, from an opposite RER platform to a change of hairstyle&#8230;<\/p><p>While the title might suggest a more militant plot, it&rsquo;s probably his least politically potent film, although it does deal with certain issues inherent in the French education system and the teaching profession. The stakes aren&rsquo;t there. It&rsquo;s not a political indictment, nor a dazzling demonstration of the strength of the teaching community.
