sc\u00e8ne publique, de ses dangers mis en lumi\u00e8re en ce moment par les gr\u00e8ves hollywoodiennes aux progr\u00e8s civils et militaires qu\u2019elle peut initier, Gareth Edwards la place au c\u0153ur d\u2019une fable SF humaniste et spectaculaire.<\/p><ul><li>Partie I\u00a0: la critique<\/li><\/ul><p>\u201cRobots to be free\u201d<\/p><p>Sept ans apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Rogue One\u00a0\u00bb, le cin\u00e9aste britannique signe une nouvelle \u0153uvre de science-fiction qui aurait pu s\u2019inscrire dans l\u2019univers de George Lucas. Il recollabore avec le sc\u00e9nariste Chris Weitz et le directeur de la photographie Greig Fraser (Dune\u00a0; The Batman) aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s du jeune Oren Soffer pour nous plonger dans un vaste univers aux paysages vertigineux. \u00ab\u00a0The Creator\u00a0\u00bb b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d\u2019une esth\u00e9tique soigneusement travaill\u00e9e et de splendides visuels nous transportant dans un monde impr\u00e9gn\u00e9 de cultures orientales. Les d\u00e9cors sont dantesques, l\u2019univers est envo\u00fbtant et les effets sp\u00e9ciaux \u00e9poustouflants. C\u2019est un magnifique spectacle \u00e0 voir en salles sur tr\u00e8s grand \u00e9cran\u00a0!\u00a0<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9alisateur du meilleur Star Wars r\u00e9cent nous plonge dans une aventure futuriste \u00e9pique et haletante de l\u2019ampleur d\u2019un \u00ab\u00a0Blade Runner\u00a0\u00bb qui ne sacrifie jamais ses personnages au d\u00e9triment des combats bien qu\u2019ils soient nombreux. C\u2019est un film de guerre mais dont l\u2019intrigue est bel et bien port\u00e9e par la relation entre les personnages \u00e9quilibrant ainsi l\u2019action \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9motion. Si la trame de l\u2019histoire peut para\u00eetre assez pr\u00e9visible et la fin quelque peu convenue, le voyage dans lequel nous embarque \u00ab\u00a0The Creator\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019av\u00e8re particuli\u00e8rement divertissant et fascinant. Malgr\u00e9 quelques incoh\u00e9rences ou pistes narratives sous-exploit\u00e9es, il introduit un monde tr\u00e8s riche qui se nourrit de notre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 pour mieux nous questionner. Si l\u2019univers manque un peu de contextualisation, il laisse n\u00e9anmoins la porte grande ouverte aux interpr\u00e9tations. Mais \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence de ces superproductions hollywoodiennes, le film de Gareth Edwards a \u00e9t\u00e9 produit pour seulement $86M (soit pr\u00e8s de trois fois moins que les giga-blockbusters de l\u2019ann\u00e9e) \u2013 pour un rendu absolument renversant \u2013 et avec une approche diff\u00e9rente. En effet si <em>Disney<\/em> (via <em>20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Studios<\/em>) distribue bien le film, c\u2019est <em>New Regency<\/em> qui l&rsquo;a produit, un studio plus \u00e0 m\u00eame de soutenir le r\u00e9alisateur dans son projet (The Revenant\u00a0; The Northman\u00a0; Ad Astra). L\u2019\u00e9quipe a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duite pour lui permettre de tourner en d\u00e9cors naturels dans pas moins de huit pays de la Tha\u00eflande \u2013 o\u00f9 elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 immobilis\u00e9e pendant le COVID \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019Indon\u00e9sie en passant par l\u2019Himalaya. Un choix qui donne au film une esth\u00e9tique singuli\u00e8re et le distingue du reste. Mais un choix atypique dans la mesure o\u00f9 les films de SF co\u00fbtent cher et ne rapportent souvent pas assez d\u2019argent. Mais son existence et son (potentiel) succ\u00e8s pourraient bien ouvrir le cin\u00e9ma hollywoodien vers une nouvelle voie.<\/p><p>L\u2019intrigue se d\u00e9roule dans un futur proche au pass\u00e9 fictif, un futur tel qu\u2019on l\u2019imaginait dans le pass\u00e9, un futur o\u00f9 la robotique aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s fortement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e dans les ann\u00e9es 1950 g\u00e9n\u00e9rant la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019une nouvelle esp\u00e8ce d\u2019humanit\u00e9, une IA dou\u00e9e d\u2019une conscience. Nous sommes alors en 2065, le monde est divis\u00e9 en deux superpuissances\u00a0: les Etats-Unis et la Nouvelle-Asie. Les premiers ont banni l\u2019IA, les seconds vivent avec comme partie \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re de leur identit\u00e9 culturelle et spirituelle avec ce qui s\u2019apparente \u00e0 une population post-humaine appel\u00e9e les \u2018Simulants\u2019. Mais avec la peur de l\u2019IA, arrivent le besoin de contr\u00f4le, et l\u2019emploi de la force in\u00e9vitablement. Cette situation a donc engendr\u00e9 une guerre entre les deux blocs que l\u2019arm\u00e9e am\u00e9ricaine livre sans piti\u00e9 en d\u00e9ployant une \u00e9toile de la mort Nomad en orbite capable de mener une guerre nucl\u00e9aire depuis le ciel et dont les colonnes lasers sont embl\u00e9matiques du film. Le reste est assez flou, le contexte g\u00e9opolitique reste vague, on ne voit pas le gouvernement am\u00e9ricain (seule l\u2019arm\u00e9e est \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre \u2026), mais ce n\u2019est qu\u2019un d\u00e9cor pour d\u00e9livrer un message clair sur la politique \u00e9trang\u00e8re am\u00e9ricaine. \u00ab\u00a0The Creator\u00a0\u00bb met donc en sc\u00e8ne un conflit international au sein duquel se livre un conflit personnel port\u00e9 par John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman\u00a0; Tenet\u00a0; Malcolm &amp; Marie) et la jeune et excellente Madeleine Yuna Voyles (dont c\u2019est le premier film) aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Gemma Chan (Les Eternels) et Ken Watanabe (Le Dernier Samoura\u00ef) o\u00f9 chaque personnage est motiv\u00e9 par l\u2019amour.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15320 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847-1024x515.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847-768x387.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><ul><li>Partie III\u00a0: le fond<\/li><\/ul><p>\u201cWhere are you headed? Heaven. Have a nice flight!\u201d<\/p><p>Comme un symbole, Edwards ram\u00e8ne donc cette guerre futuriste au Vietnam pour mieux critiquer les m\u00e9thodes am\u00e9ricaines. Dans l\u2019ensemble, son film joue beaucoup sur les symboles en simplifiant les enjeux et les conflits dans un sch\u00e9ma souvent binaire (m\u00eame si l\u2019on devine un monde plus nuanc\u00e9). On peut reprocher \u00e0 ces simplifications le m\u00e9lange complet de cultures asiatiques sous un m\u00eame drapeau, mais ces simplifications permettent au film de renforcer sa symbolique. La division du monde est donc aussi bien celle d\u2019une partie favorable et d\u2019une autre oppos\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019IA, mais aussi un affrontement entre conservateurs et progressistes, une guerre physique illustrant la guerre \u00e9conomique actuelle entre les Etats-Unis et la Chine ou encore la concurrence entre les technologies (ici les IA, robots, et cyborgs) occidentales et asiatiques. Ce conflit binaire entre deux p\u00f4les de valeurs, c\u2019est aussi celui d\u2019un empire contre une r\u00e9bellion, celui d\u2019une industrie contre une religion. Si l\u2019IA est donc au centre du film, ce n\u2019est pourtant pas le c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit tant \u00ab\u00a0The Creator\u00a0\u00bb est une profonde critique de la politique \u00e9trang\u00e8re \u2013 et en particulier s\u00e9curitaire \u2013 des Etats-Unis, un v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9quisitoire contre l\u2019ing\u00e9rence de la superpuissance occidentale et ses crimes de guerre. Comme en Irak ou en Afghanistan, l\u2019arm\u00e9e am\u00e9ricaine (omnipr\u00e9sente sur le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019op\u00e9ration) ne fait aucune diff\u00e9rence entre les diff\u00e9rentes populations (humaines ou post-humaines) asiatiques et s\u2019emporte dans une escalade du conflit en bombardant \u00e0 tout va depuis les airs.<\/p><p>A travers cette propagation de l\u2019IA, le film ne questionne finalement pas tant que \u00e7a la robotique en elle-m\u00eame et le progr\u00e8s technique, il s\u2019en sert plus pour interroger la r\u00e9elle nature de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 et ce que signifie \u00eatre vivant ou \u00e9teint. Les questions de la mise en veille humaine et de la violence inh\u00e9rente \u00e0 l\u2019humain sont donc au centre du r\u00e9cit. Quand une IA sera \u2018consciente\u2019, la d\u00e9brancher sera-t-il consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un meurtre\u00a0? Quand une IA sera suffisamment d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e pour simuler l\u2019humain, sera-t-elle mieux programmer que nous\u00a0? Sera-t-elle plus humaine que nous-m\u00eames tant notre histoire est remplie de haine et de crimes contre notre propre humanit\u00e9\u00a0? Mais l\u2019IA sert aussi ici \u00e0 poser d\u2019une part, de mani\u00e8re sous-jacente, la question du genre\u00a0et de la fluidit\u00e9 de la nouvelle esp\u00e8ce ou du futur de la n\u00f4tre\u00a0; et d\u2019autre part \u00e0 interroger notre rapport \u00e0 la religion avec un n\u00e9o-Bouddhisme technophile renversant les mythes tib\u00e9tains et symbole d\u2019une religion qui prend les armes.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0The Creator\u00a0\u00bb propose en effet un r\u00e9cit tr\u00e8s biblique \u2013 comme son titre le sugg\u00e8re \u2013 o\u00f9 Adam et Eve enfantent une nouvelle humanit\u00e9 en la personne d\u2019Alphie (d\u00e9riv\u00e9 de la premi\u00e8re lettre de l\u2019alphabet grec, et premier sp\u00e9cimen de cette nouvelle esp\u00e8ce). L\u2019enfant r\u00e9unit alors les deux id\u00e9ologies oppos\u00e9es de ce conflit binaire et s\u2019apparente \u00e0 un nouveau proph\u00e8te, un J\u00e9sus des nouveaux peuples avec les figures de Marie, la m\u00e8re cr\u00e9atrice, et de Joseph le p\u00e8re d\u00e9sempar\u00e9. Ces figures de Adam\/Joseph et Eve\/Marie se retrouvent d\u2019ailleurs dans un champ opportun\u00e9ment situ\u00e9 au \u2018Paradis\u2019 d\u2019o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9lu chute pour ramener la paix et un futur \u00e0 l\u2019esp\u00e8ce.<\/p><p>Pour conclure, c\u2019est donc une \u0153uvre o\u00f9 l\u2019IA n\u2019est finalement pas le c\u0153ur d\u2019un r\u00e9cit portant sur la civilisation humaine de mani\u00e8re plus g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, un r\u00e9cit futuriste qui fait le bilan du pr\u00e9sent comme toute bonne science-fiction. Teaming up again with screenwriter Chris Weitz and cinematographer Greig Fraser (Dune; The Batman) alongside rising star Oren Soffer, he immerses us in a vast universe of vertiginous vistas. \u201cThe Creator\u201d showcases a carefully crafted aesthetic, with gorgeous visuals taking us into a world steeped in Asian cultures. The sets are stunning, the universe mesmerizing and the special effects breathtaking. It&rsquo;s a wonderful spectacle to be seen in theaters on the biggest of screens!<\/p><p>The director of the best recent Star Wars movie throws us into an epic, breathless futuristic adventure on the magnitude of \u201cBlade Runner\u201d that never sacrifices its characters to the expense of the battles, even though there are plenty of them. It&rsquo;s a war movie, but the plot is driven by the relationships between the characters, balancing action and emotion. While the plot may seem rather predictable and the ending a bit formulaic, the journey on which \u201cThe Creator\u201d takes us proves to be particularly entertaining and fascinating. Despite a few inconsistencies and underdeveloped narrative threads, it unveils a very rich world that feeds on our reality to better question us. If the universe lacks a little contextualization, it nonetheless leaves the door wide open to interpretation. But unlike these big Hollywood productions, Gareth Edwards&rsquo; film was produced for only $86M (i.e., almost three times less than the giga-blockbusters of the year) \u2013 for an absolutely staggering result \u2013 and with a different approach. While <em>Disney<\/em> (via <em>20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Studios<\/em>) is distributing the film, it was produced by <em>New Regency<\/em>, a studio more suited to supporting a director&rsquo;s project (The Revenant; The Northman; Ad Astra). As a result, the crew was scaled down to shoot on natural sets in no fewer than eight countries, from Thailand \u2013 where it was stranded during the COVID \u2013 to Indonesia as well as the Himalayas. A choice that gives the film a singular look and sets it apart from the rest. But it is also an atypical choice, given that sci-fi movies are expensive and often don&rsquo;t bring in enough money. But its very existence and (potential) success could well open up a new horizon for Hollywood cinema.<\/p><p>The plot takes place in a near-future with a fictional past, a future as imagined in the past, a future in which robotics were highly developed in the 1950s, leading to the creation of a new species of humanity, an AI with a conscience. The year is 2065, and the world is divided into two superpowers: the United States and New Asia. The former have banished AI, while the latter live with it as an integral part of their cultural and spiritual identity, with what can only be described as a post-human population called the &lsquo;Simulants&rsquo;. But with the fear of AI comes the need for control, and inevitably the use of force. This leads to a war between the two blocs, which the American army wages ruthlessly by deploying an orbiting Nomad Death Star designed to deliver nuclear warfare from the sky, and whose laser columns are emblematic of the film. The rest is rather unclear, the geopolitical context remains vague, we don&rsquo;t see the American government (only the army is on display&#8230;), but this is just a backdrop to deliver a clear message about American foreign policy. \u201cThe Creator\u201d thus stages an international conflict within which a personal one takes place, carried by John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman; Tenet, Malcolm &amp; Marie) and the excellent young Madeleine Yuna Voyles (whose first film this is) alongside Gemma Chan (Eternals) and Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), where each character is driven by love.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15320 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847-1024x515.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_847-768x387.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><ul><li>Part III: \u2026and its substance<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00ab\u00a0What is the purpose of your travel? To be free. Have a nice flight!\u00a0\u00bb<\/p><p>Symbolically, Edwards brings this futuristic war back to Vietnam to better condemn American practices. Overall, his film relies heavily on symbolism, simplifying issues and conflicts into an often binary pattern (even if a more nuanced world lies beneath). These oversimplifications may be blamed for the complete medley of Asian cultures under the same flag, but they also help to strengthen the film&rsquo;s symbolism. The division of the world is therefore not only that of one side in favor of AI and another against it, but also a clash between conservatives and progressives, a real battle illustrating the current economic conflict between the US and China, or the competition between Western and Asian technologies (here, AIs, robots and cyborgs). This binary conflict between two value clusters is also that of an empire versus a rebellion, and industry versus religion. Although AI is at the center of the film, it is not the heart of the story, as \u201cThe Creator\u201d is a powerful indictment of U.S. foreign policy \u2013 and particularly its security agenda \u2013 and a genuine critique of the Western superpower&rsquo;s interference and war crimes. As in Iraq and Afghanistan, the American army (ubiquitous in the battlefield) makes no distinction between the different (human or post-human) Asian populations, and escalates the conflict by bombing relentlessly from the air.<\/p><p>Through the rise of AI, the film ultimately doesn&rsquo;t focus so much on robotics per se and technical progress, but rather uses it to question the real nature of humanity and what it means to be alive or off. The issues of human shutdown and inherent human violence are therefore key to the story. When an AI is &lsquo;conscious&rsquo;, will pulling the plug be considered murder? When an AI is sufficiently developed to simulate a human, will it be better programmed than we are? Will it be more human than ourselves, given that our history is so full of hatred and crimes against our own humanity? But AI also provides first of all an opportunity to raise the underlying question of gender and the fluidity of the new species or the future of our own; and secondly, a way of questioning our relationship with religion, with a technophile neo-Buddhism subverting Tibetan myths and representing a religion that takes up arms.<\/p><p>As the title suggests, \u201cThe Creator\u201d tells a very biblical story, in which Adam and Eve give birth to a new humanity in the person of Alphie (named after the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and the first specimen of this new species). The child then brings together the two opposing ideologies of this binary conflict, and is akin to a new prophet, a Jesus of the new peoples, with the figures of Mary, the creative mother, and Joseph, the bewildered father. These Adam\/Joseph and Eve\/Mary figures are also found in a field conveniently located in \u00ab\u00a0Heaven\u00a0\u00bb, from which the chosen one falls from the sky to bring peace and a future to the human race.<\/p><p>In conclusion, this is a film in which AI is not at the heart of a story tackling human civilization more broadly, a futuristic tale that, like all good science fiction, examines our present. A film that invents a very fertile world for debate, questioning the viewer in a spectacular fashion.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
