C\u2019est ce qui se produit pour nombre d\u2019humains dans un monde proche du n\u00f4tre o\u00f9 d\u00e9ferle une vague de mutations inexpliqu\u00e9es et incontr\u00f4lables. C\u2019est aussi ce qui arrive \u00e0 une femme qui dispara\u00eet myst\u00e9rieusement et dont le mari, Fran\u00e7ois, et le fils, \u00c9mile, partent \u00e0 la recherche dans les for\u00eats du Sud-Ouest. Une qu\u00eate qui les changera \u00e0 jamais.<\/p><p>Associant merveilleux, surnaturel et un certain r\u00e9alisme social, \u00ab\u00a0Le R\u00e8gne animal\u00a0\u00bb est un touchant long-m\u00e9trage peupl\u00e9 de cr\u00e9atures troublantes, parfois effrayantes, mais aussi et surtout magnifiques. Le m\u00e9ticuleux et juste travail des corps et effets sp\u00e9ciaux nous transporte au-del\u00e0 de nos fantasmes sans les exag\u00e9rer\u00a0; les sc\u00e8nes r\u00e9unissant les personnages humains comme non humains promettent ainsi autant de symbioses id\u00e9ales que de chaos n\u00e9s de la crainte de l\u2019alt\u00e9rit\u00e9. Confrontons par exemple l\u2019amiti\u00e9 naissante entre \u00c9mile et Fix l\u2019Homme-Oiseau \u00e0 cette cauchemardesque poursuite d\u2019\u00e9chassiers au beau milieu des champs de ma\u00efs.<\/p><p>D\u2019une beaut\u00e9 \u00e9poustouflante, le film de Thomas Cailley (Les Combattants) interroge notre capacit\u00e9 de tol\u00e9rance face aux changements et bouleversements de tous ordres, de l\u2019apparition de nouvelles \u00e9pid\u00e9mies \u00e0 nos \u00e9volutions corporelles \u00e0 tout \u00e2ge (notamment durant l\u2019adolescence), en passant par les questions sous-jacentes de mixit\u00e9 sociale et d\u2019int\u00e9gration. Les \u00ab\u00a0b\u00eates\u00a0\u00bb, les cr\u00e9atures, les cryptides forment alors des projections de nos peurs, envies, besoins et instincts primaires qui pourtant peuvent se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler bien plus purs que ce qu\u2019enfante l\u2019engeance humaine obnubil\u00e9e par son d\u00e9sir de contr\u00f4le. Dans cet univers incertain et en plein basculement, le duo Fran\u00e7ois\/\u00c9mile incarne avec prouesse ce tiraillement qu\u2019est la volont\u00e9 de garder une certaine stabilit\u00e9 tout en s\u2019accordant de nouvelles libert\u00e9s qui s\u2019offrent \u00e0 nous\u00a0; Romain Duris comme Paul Kircher se montrent ici magistraux.<\/p><p>En revanche et paradoxalement, \u00ab\u00a0Le R\u00e8gne animal\u00a0\u00bb nous envo\u00fbte tant qu\u2019il nous frustre <em>a posteriori<\/em> de par ses quelques l\u00e9g\u00e8res lacunes sc\u00e9naristiques \u2013 autour des personnages moins que secondaires (et proposant pourtant des sous-enjeux tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressants), des questions philosophiques et soci\u00e9tales finalement assez peu creus\u00e9es, et surtout du sort r\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00c9mile et Fran\u00e7ois \u00e0 la fin du long-m\u00e9trage, libre d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation. This is what happens to many humans in a world close to our own, where a wave of unexplained, uncontrollable mutations is sweeping through the air. It&rsquo;s also what happens to a woman who mysteriously disappears, and whose husband, Fran\u00e7ois, and son, \u00c9mile, set out to find her in the forests of the French South-West. A quest that will change them forever.<\/p><p>Combining the marvelous, the supernatural and a certain social realism, \u201cThe Animal Kingdom\u201d is a moving feature film filled with disturbing, sometimes frightening, but above all magnificent creatures. The meticulous attention to detail in bodies and special effects takes us beyond our fantasies without exaggerating them; the scenes bringing together human and non-human characters promise ideal symbioses as much as the chaos born of fear of otherness. The budding friendship between \u00c9mile and Fix the Birdman, for example, is set against a nightmarish wader chase in the middle of a cornfield.<\/p><p>Breathtakingly beautiful, the film directed by Thomas Cailley (Love at first sight) explores our capacity for tolerance in the face of changes and upheavals of all kinds, from the appearance of new epidemics to our bodily evolutions at any age (particularly during adolescence), not to mention the underlying issues of social mixing and integration. The \u00ab\u00a0beasts\u00a0\u00bb, creatures and cryptids are projections of our fears, desires, needs and primal instincts, which may turn out to be much purer than what the human race, obsessed by its desire for control, produces. In this uncertain, shifting world, the duo Fran\u00e7ois\/\u00c9mile brilliantly embody the tug-of-war of maintaining a certain stability while allowing themselves new freedoms; Romain Duris and Paul Kircher are both brilliant.<\/p><p>However, paradoxically, \u201cThe Animal Kingdom\u201d mesmerizes us so much that it frustrates us a posteriori with its slight plot holes &#8211; around characters who are less than secondary (and yet offer very interesting sub-plots), philosophical and societal questions that are ultimately rather underdeveloped, and above all the fate given to \u00c9mile and Fran\u00e7ois at the end of the film, which is left open to interpretation.
