COVID, puis un second repouss\u00e9 par la gr\u00e8ve des acteurs (par quoi sera donc repouss\u00e9 le troisi\u00e8me volet\u00a0?), le tant attendu \u00ab\u00a0Dune\u00a0: Partie II\u00a0\u00bb est enfin l\u00e0\u00a0; et autant dire que le pari est r\u00e9ussi\u00a0! Dans la continuit\u00e9 directe de la premi\u00e8re partie, cette seconde poursuit la destin\u00e9e de Paul Atr\u00e9ides dans l\u2019univers imagin\u00e9 par Frank Herbert dans les ann\u00e9es 1960. Si la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tait plus contemplative, cette seconde s\u2019adonne plus \u00e0 la dimension \u00e9pique tout en conservant la recette du premier film\u00a0: un sc\u00e9nario complexe, subtil et riche dans un cadre technique spectaculaire, des visuels \u00e9poustouflants, et des performances fantastiques.<\/p><p>V\u00e9ritable blockbuster de luxe, ce deuxi\u00e8me volet voit le retour de Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, et \u00e9videmment du duo au c\u0153ur de l\u2019intrigue\u00a0: Zendaya et Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet dont le personnage principal gagne en maturit\u00e9, en nuances, et en zones d\u2019ombres. Ils sont dor\u00e9navant rejoints par Christopher Walken dans le r\u00f4le de l\u2019Empereur, de Florence Pugh dans celui de sa fille, de Souheila Yacoub dans le r\u00f4le d\u2019une Fremen, de L\u00e9a Seydoux dans celui d\u2019une Bene Gesserit, et enfin de l\u2019hypnotisant Austin Butler en h\u00e9ritier concurrent de Paul.<\/p><p>Pour son quatri\u00e8me film de science-fiction (apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Premier Contact\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Blade Runner 2049\u00a0\u00bb, et \u00ab\u00a0Dune\u00a0\u00bb) Denis Villeneuve r\u00e9ussit une nouvelle fois \u00e0 nous plonger dans un autre monde, un imaginaire, un univers riche en d\u00e9tails et en couleurs. C\u2019est un cin\u00e9ma esth\u00e9tique dot\u00e9 d\u2019une direction artistique monumentale avec de magnifiques nouveaux d\u00e9cors, maquillages, et effets sp\u00e9ciaux. L\u2019\u00e9chelle a beau \u00eatre massive, la v\u00e9risimilitude est maintenue avec un monde qui n\u2019appara\u00eet jamais artificiel. Le sentiment de puissance et d\u2019immensit\u00e9 est toujours pr\u00e9sent avec les choix de cadre, le mixage son et une musique \u00e0 faire fr\u00e9mir, mais la relation de l\u2019humain avec la nature \u00e9volue. Fid\u00e8le \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e et aux th\u00e8mes de l\u2019\u0153uvre originale, son sc\u00e9nario co-\u00e9crit avec Jon Spaihts est dense avec de nombreuses p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties cl\u00f4turant l\u2019intrigue initi\u00e9e dans la premi\u00e8re partie tout en laissant la porte grande ouverte pour une derni\u00e8re. Les changements et ellipses apport\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre originale r\u00e9ussissent \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des relations int\u00e9ressantes, une exposition fluide, et rendre accessible la rencontre des conflits int\u00e9rieurs et ext\u00e9rieurs. Toute la constellation de personnages est habilement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e et \u0153uvre vers une finalit\u00e9 globale\u00a0: l\u2019ascension de Paul. Mais est-il r\u00e9ellement l\u2019\u00e9lu promis ou seulement un pion du pouvoir dans l\u2019ombre\u00a0?<\/p><p>Si \u00ab\u00a0Dune\u00a0\u00bb est une histoire de batailles de pouvoir et un r\u00e9cit d\u2019influences, c\u2019est avant tout une remise en question de la figure messianique \u00e0 travers un anti-h\u00e9ros qui doit vaincre le scepticisme et assouvir sa vengeance. Les enjeux religieux sont ainsi au c\u0153ur du conflit politique du film. On parle ici de guerre sainte, de fanatisme, d\u2019endoctrinement, et de proph\u00e9tie. Des enjeux qui font \u00e9cho \u00e0 notre monde et r\u00e9sonne ainsi aux cris de guerre des Fedeykin (alias mujahidin). Mais c\u2019est ici la femme qui porte la vision, et l\u2019homme leur sert de mythe. La religion agit alors comme v\u00e9ritable contre-pouvoir au sein d\u2019un Empire qui appara\u00eet comme un th\u00e9\u00e2tre de marionnettes jou\u00e9 par une congr\u00e9gation f\u00e9minine, les Bene Gesserit, dont l\u2019influence \u0153uvre dans l\u2019ombre (\u00e0 l\u2019image de leur code vestimentaire) pour favoriser la continuit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me ou plut\u00f4t sa chute.<\/p><p>M\u00eame avec ses presque trois heures, l\u2019intrigue avance assez vite au point de ne plus laisser beaucoup de temps aux moments calmes, de silence et de paix du premier volet. Cela peut se comprendre, car ce volet est celui de la guerre, mais automatiquement il laisse un certain charme et quelques enjeux politico-\u00e9conomiques de c\u00f4t\u00e9 pour se concentrer plus sur la destin\u00e9e de Paul et sa figure de leader assombrie par celle de proph\u00e8te. Ce diptyque repr\u00e9sente certainement l\u2019un des paris les plus audacieux du cin\u00e9ma contemporain et restera dans les annales comme l\u2019une des nouvelles grandes sagas. Si en 2001, Peter Jackson avait adapt\u00e9 la bible de la fantasy \u00ab\u00a0Le Seigneur des Anneaux\u00a0\u00bb, vingt ans plus tard, le cin\u00e9aste qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois fait de m\u00eame pour la SF.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Dune\u00a0: Partie II\u00a0\u00bb offre un grand spectacle digne du blockbuster hollywoodien \u00e0 gros budget \u2013 bien qu\u2019il soit inf\u00e9rieur aux $200M dont sont coutumiers les grosses productions actuelles \u2013 en y ajoutant des figures nuanc\u00e9es, un sc\u00e9nario riche, et une immersion sensationnelle. In direct continuity with the first part, this second follows the destiny of Paul Atreides in the universe imagined by Frank Herbert in the 1960s. While the first was more contemplative, the second delves more into the epic dimension, while sticking to the formula of the first film: a complex, subtle and rich script set against a spectacular technical backdrop, breathtaking visuals and fantastic performances.<\/p><p>Truly a prestige blockbuster, this second installment sees the return of Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and of course the duo at the heart of the plot: Zendaya and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, whose main character gains in maturity, nuance and grey areas. They are now joined by Christopher Walken as the Emperor, Florence Pugh as his daughter, Souheila Yacoub as a Fremen, L\u00e9a Seydoux as a Bene Gesserit, and the mesmerizing Austin Butler as Paul&rsquo;s rival heir.<\/p><p>For his fourth science-fiction film (after \u201cArrival\u201d, \u201cBlade Runner 2049\u201d and \u201cDune\u201d), Denis Villeneuve once again succeeds in transporting us into another world, an imagination, a universe rich in detail and color. This is highly esthetic cinema, with monumental artistic direction and stunning new sets, make-up and special effects. The scale may be massive, but the verisimilitude is upheld, with a world that never feels fake. The sense of power and vastness is still present in the framing choices, sound mixing and bone-chilling music, but the relationship between humans and nature is shifting. Faithful to the idea and themes of the original novel, his screenplay, co-written with Jon Spaihts, has a lot to cover with several twists and turns, bringing the plot of the first part to a close while leaving the door wide open for a final one. The changes and ellipses made to the original story manage to create interesting relationships, fluid exposition, and make the interweaving of inner and outer conflicts easily accessible. The whole constellation of characters is cleverly developed and works towards an overall goal: Paul&rsquo;s rise. But is he really the prophesied chosen one, or just a pawn of the power lurking in the shadows?<\/p><p>If \u201cDune\u201d is a story of power struggles and influences, it is above all a reflection on the messianic figure through an anti-hero who must overcome skepticism and fulfill his vengeance. Religious issues are therefore at the heart of the film&rsquo;s political conflict. This is a film about holy war, fanaticism, indoctrination and prophecy. Issues that echo our own world and resonate with the war cries of the Fedeykin (aka mujahidin). But here it&rsquo;s the woman who bears the vision, and the man who serves as their myth. Religion then acts as a real counter-power within an Empire that appears like a puppet theater played out by a female congregation, the Bene Gesserit, whose influence operates in the shadows (just like their dress code) to favor the continuity of the regime or, rather, its downfall.<\/p><p>Even at almost three hours, the plot moves pretty fast, to the point of leaving little time for the quiet, peaceful moments of the first part. That&rsquo;s understandable, since this chapter is one of war, but it automatically leaves a certain charm and some political-economic stakes aside to focus more on Paul&rsquo;s destiny and his figure as a leader darkened by that of a prophet. This diptych certainly represents one of the boldest gambles in modern cinema, and will go down in history as one of the great new sagas. In 2001, Peter Jackson adapted the bible of fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, and twenty years later, the Quebec filmmaker is doing the same for sci-fi.<\/p><p>\u201cDune: Part II\u201d offers a grand spectacle worthy of a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster \u2013 albeit below the $200M mark customary of today&rsquo;s big productions &#8211; with the addition of nuanced characters, a rich plot and thrilling immersion. It&rsquo;s a true cinematic experience, to be seen on the (very) big screen, an ambitious space-opera that revitalizes sci-fi, the blockbusters, and the cinema as a whole by bringing audiences back to theaters (especially in the U.S. after a historically low start to the year) with an opening weekend of $82.5M at the domestic box-office (exactly the same as last summer&rsquo;s
