dans la jungle\u00a0\u00bb (1903) d\u2019Henry James en moins d\u2019un an dans le paysage cin\u00e9matographique fran\u00e7ais apr\u00e8s le film de Patric Chiha avec Ana\u00efs Demoustier et Tom Mercier, celle de Bertrand Bonello (co-produite par Xavier Dolan) est une interpr\u00e9tation tr\u00e8s libre et conjugu\u00e9e au futur ant\u00e9rieur. Le r\u00e9alisateur \u00e9tiquet\u00e9 \u2018arts &amp; essais\u2019 de films tels que \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Apollonide\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0Saint Laurent\u00a0\u00bb signe une nouvelle proposition de cin\u00e9ma singuli\u00e8re, un film \u00e9trange, une \u0153uvre inclassable.<\/p><p>C\u2019est une histoire d\u2019amour impossible entre deux \u00eatre aimant\u00e9s \u00e0 travers les \u00e9poques. Le temps \u00e9coul\u00e9 dans l\u2019\u0153uvre originale s\u2019\u00e9tend ici sur plusieurs vies ant\u00e9rieures o\u00f9 les personnages de L\u00e9a Seydoux et George MacKay se croisent et se recroisent. Le film \u00e9tait initialement destin\u00e9 \u00e0 Gaspard Ulliel \u2013 et il lui est \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u2013 mais c\u2019est donc l\u2019acteur anglais de \u00ab\u00a01917\u00a0\u00bb qui vient le remplacer, dans une version qui devient bilingue (alors qu\u2019il ne parlait pas fran\u00e7ais avant le tournage). La structure de l\u2019intrigue, avec ses vies ant\u00e9rieures et imbriqu\u00e9es, donne aux acteurs une occasion de jouer des personnages \u00e0 chaque fois subtilement diff\u00e9rents tout en cr\u00e9ant une certaine continuit\u00e9. L\u00e9a Seydoux y transmet une beaut\u00e9 et un myst\u00e8re intemporels quand George MacKay impressionne par un jeu nuanc\u00e9 de retenue froide.<\/p><p>C\u2019est une r\u00e9flexion sur l\u2019humain et les d\u00e9rives de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 questionnant nos peurs, nos relations, notre rapport \u00e0 l\u2019art, \u00e0 la technologie aussi (en particulier l\u2019IA), et surtout aux sentiments. Dans une opposition du futur (ou serait-elle d\u00e9j\u00e0-l\u00e0\u00a0?) entre travail et affect, \u00ab\u00a0La B\u00eate\u00a0\u00bb met en sc\u00e8ne la disparition des sentiments dans la perspective d\u2019\u00e9radiquer la souffrance. Mais une disparition progressive de nos peurs ne signifie-t-elle pas une disparition de nos sensibilit\u00e9s, de nos singularit\u00e9s et <em>in fine<\/em> de ce qui nous rend vivants\u00a0? La peur, la solitude, l\u2019amour \u2026 sont des sentiments qui traversent les \u00e9poques, d\u2019o\u00f9 leur r\u00e9currence dans les multiples vies partag\u00e9es du couple de protagonistes.<\/p><p>Les \u00e9poques se r\u00e9pondent ainsi au travers de leurs th\u00e9matiques, personnages et motifs (voyance, poup\u00e9es, pigeons). C\u2019est une structure qui peut para\u00eetre complexe et met en place un triptyque dont les correspondances, r\u00e9currences et absences sont la v\u00e9ritable ligne directrice de l\u2019intrigue \u2013 bien qu\u2019elle ne soit jamais explicit\u00e9e comme telle jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la toute fin. Progressivement les sentiments sont ainsi exprim\u00e9s (1910), refoul\u00e9s (2014), puis supprim\u00e9s (2044) pendant que les personnages semblent \u00e9voluer d\u2019\u00e9poque en \u00e9poque de mani\u00e8re coh\u00e9rente et sans en \u00eatre eux-m\u00eames conscients. Leurs choix et r\u00f4les se r\u00e9pondent de mani\u00e8re sym\u00e9trique pour arriver toujours \u00e0 une m\u00eame conclusion. L\u2019\u00e9volution du monde est ici plus comportementale que mat\u00e9rialiste, le tout sur fond de catastrophe permanente que craignent les personnages. Et \u00e0 chaque \u00e9poque, la catastrophe personnelle qu\u2019ils \u00e9prouvent est li\u00e9e \u00e0 une catastrophe g\u00e9n\u00e9rale\/soci\u00e9tale dont l\u2019humain est de plus en plus responsable.<\/p><p>Il y a un peu de Lynch et de Cronenberg dans cet univers o\u00f9 Bonello tord aussi bien l\u2019image que la narration. Il cr\u00e9e une vraie esth\u00e9tique avec une mise en sc\u00e8ne travaill\u00e9e, de ses longs zooms \u00e0 ses gros plans en passant par des d\u00e9cors qui nourrissent l\u2019intrigue tout comme ses variations de cadre, et une audace en ouverture et conclusion du film invitant \u00e0 y rer\u00e9fl\u00e9chir sous un autre jour. Sa narration d\u00e9construite et non-lin\u00e9aire nous d\u00e9route \u00e9galement sans toujours nous permettre de saisir les tenants et aboutissants de chaque s\u00e9quence courant le risque de soit s\u2019y laisser bercer, soit s\u2019y perdre.<\/p><p>Il laisse certainement des doutes tout du long\u00a0: que repr\u00e9sentent les personnages\u00a0? quelle est cette b\u00eate\u00a0? quelle est cette myst\u00e9rieuse catastrophe proph\u00e9tique\u00a0? Serait-ce justement l\u2019absence de catastrophe ou la disparition de cette derni\u00e8re\u00a0? Bertrand Bonello&rsquo;s film (co-produced by Xavier Dolan) is a loose adaptation in the past future. The indie director of films such as \u201cL&rsquo;Apollonide\u201d and \u201cSaint Laurent\u201d delivers another singular cinematic experience, a strange film, an unclassifiable creation.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s a story of impossible love between two loving beings across the ages. The time elapsed in the original work here spans several past lives, where L\u00e9a Seydoux and George MacKay&rsquo;s characters meet again and again. The film was originally intended for Gaspard Ulliel \u2013 and is now dedicated to him \u2013 but the English actor from \u201c1917\u201d takes over, in what becomes a bilingual adaptation (even though he didn&rsquo;t speak French before shooting). The structure of the plot, with its interwoven past lives, gives the actors an opportunity to play subtly different characters each time, while at the same time creating a certain continuity. L\u00e9a Seydoux conveys a timeless beauty and mystery, while George MacKay impresses with a nuanced performance of cold restraint.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s a reflection on the human being and the drifts of society, questioning our fears, our relationships, our approach to art, technology (especially AI) and, above all, to feelings. In a future opposition (or is it already there?) between work and affect, \u201cThe Beast\u201d depicts the vanishing of feelings in an effort to eradicate suffering. But doesn&rsquo;t the gradual disappearance of our fears mean the disappearance of our sensibilities, our singularities and, ultimately, of what makes us alive? Fear, loneliness, love&#8230; are feelings that span the ages, hence their recurrence in the multiple lives shared by the protagonist couple.<\/p><p>The eras thus echo each other through their themes, characters and motifs (clairvoyance, dolls, pigeons). It&rsquo;s a structure that may seem complex, but it sets up a triptych whose connections, recurrences and omissions are the real guideline of the plot \u2013 although it&rsquo;s never made explicit as such until the very end. Feelings are gradually expressed (1910), repressed (2014), then suppressed (2044), while the characters seem to evolve from era to era in a coherent fashion, without themselves being aware of it. Their choices and roles are symmetrical, always leading to the same conclusion. The evolution of the world here is more behavioral than materialistic, all against the backdrop of the permanent catastrophe that the characters fear. And in each era, the personal disaster they experience is connected to a larger\/societal catastrophe for which humans are increasingly responsible.<\/p><p>There&rsquo;s a bit of Lynch and Cronenberg in this universe where Bonello twists both image and narrative. He creates a real aesthetic with his carefully crafted <em>mise en sc\u00e8ne<\/em>, from long zooms and close-ups to sets that fuel the plot as much as the variations in aspect ratios, and bold ideas for the opening and closing of the movie inviting us to think about it again in a whole new way. The film&rsquo;s deconstructed, non-linear narrative is equally baffling, without always allowing us to grasp the ins and outs of each sequence, running the risk of either being carried along or just lost.<\/p><p>It certainly leaves doubts throughout: what do the characters represent? what is this beast? what is this mysterious prophetic catastrophe? Could it be the absence of catastrophe, or its disappearance? This is a conceptual film that mixes genres and blurs the horizon. \u201cThe Beast\u201d struggles to create enough stakes, and probably therefore lacks pace to make its maze-like plot fully fascinating, but nevertheless remains a beautiful artistic feat from an out-of-the-ordinary filmmaker.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
