Prix du public au festival de Sundance o\u00f9 il fut pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en janvier 2023, puis r\u00e9cemment r\u00e9compens\u00e9 aux BAFTA et bient\u00f4t \u00e9galement aux Oscars, du Prix du meilleur documentaire de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, \u00ab\u00a020 jours \u00e0 Marioupol\u00a0\u00bb est un film dur, poignant, oppressant \u2026 les mots manquent pour qualifier cette \u0153uvre coup de poing\u00a0!<\/p><p>Les rares images du si\u00e8ge de Marioupol c\u2019est \u00e0 eux qu\u2019on les doit\u00a0: Mstyslav Chernov et Evgeniy Maloletka, journalistes ukrainiens de l\u2019agence <em>Associated Press<\/em>. Ils sont les seuls repr\u00e9sentants de la presse internationale rest\u00e9s apr\u00e8s l\u2019invasion russe en f\u00e9vrier 2022 dans cette ville portuaire du sud de l\u2019Ukraine consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme strat\u00e9gique en raison de son emplacement sur la mer d\u2019Azov. Apr\u00e8s avoir couvert les guerres d\u2019Irak, d\u2019Afghanistan et du Haut-Karabakh, les deux journalistes se retrouvent donc \u00e0 filmer leur propre pays, \u00e0 30km de chez eux.<\/p><p>Traqu\u00e9s par les Russes, ils documentent pendant vingt jours le supplice des habitants coup\u00e9s du monde, priv\u00e9s de r\u00e9seaux t\u00e9l\u00e9phoniques, d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, d\u2019eau, de chauffage, de nourriture et soumis aux bombardements incessants des troupes Z. L\u2019absence d\u2019informations a \u00e0 la fois permis d\u2019installer un chaos g\u00e9n\u00e9ral mais aussi une v\u00e9ritable impunit\u00e9. C\u2019est pourquoi ils ont risqu\u00e9 leur vie pour rompre le silence et transmettre ces images, ces t\u00e9moignages, ces preuves. C\u2019est tout simplement un document pour l\u2019histoire, qui sert de contre-argument \u00e0 la machine propagandiste russe et leur a valu un Prix Pulitzer. C\u2019est non seulement un t\u00e9moignage essentiel d\u2019une r\u00e9alit\u00e9, une \u0153uvre de courage, mais aussi une r\u00e9flexion sur la responsabilit\u00e9 d\u2019un reporter de guerre et sur l\u2019impact (souhait\u00e9 et\/ou r\u00e9el) d\u2019un tel journalisme \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale.<\/p><p>C\u2019est \u00e9videmment un r\u00e9cit tr\u00e8s fort et d\u00e9chirant, mais c\u2019est aussi un documentaire construit comme un thriller o\u00f9 la pression monte progressivement et dont le suspense cr\u00e9e une tension suppl\u00e9mentaire aux actes de guerre eux-m\u00eames qui ont r\u00e9duit au silence quelques 450.000 voix. La narration et les choix quotidiens des deux protagonistes (ainsi que leurs implications pour les autres) renforcent le poids des images, en particulier quand l\u2019obligation morale et professionnelle de presse signifie \u00e0 la fois relayer la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 mais aussi abandonner des vies. Et au-del\u00e0 des images, des sons, et des discours effarants et effrayants, l\u2019impact de ce t\u00e9moignage est aussi sous-jacent lorsque des enfants, voire des b\u00e9b\u00e9s, arrivent progressivement \u00e0 s\u2019endormir ou rester calmes au milieu des bombardements quand les adultes sont en pleurs ou t\u00e9tanis\u00e9s. Est-ce vraiment une enfance\u00a0? Et quelles seront les cons\u00e9quences futures d\u2019une telle enfance\u00a0?<\/p><p>M\u00eame si factuellement parlant, on ne d\u00e9couvre rien dans la mesure o\u00f9 ces images sont justement parvenues \u00e0 la presse internationale, on ne peut toutefois en sortir indemne. C\u2019est un choc tout simplement, mais moins par ses dimensions didactique ou thriller \u2013 qui sont certes cruciales \u2013 que par sa force symbolique o\u00f9 l\u2019on remet en perspective les \u201920 jours\u2019 du titre \u00e0 l\u2019entame d\u2019une troisi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e de guerre.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s \u00ab Pierre, Feuille, Pistolet \u00bb sorti il y a quelques mois, voici donc un nouveau documentaire sur la trag\u00e9die ukrainienne. Un film difficile \u00e0 regarder, qui nous plonge non seulement dans l\u2019enfer mais fait aussi le si\u00e8ge de notre conscience. On en ressort d\u00e9finitivement secou\u00e9, silencieux, presque abattu quelque part. Ainsi, m\u00eame si l\u2019on sait d\u00e9j\u00e0 ce qui a pu se passer \u00e0 Marioupol, le voir et le ressentir n\u2019est pas la m\u00eame chose. A la sortie on n\u2019est plus vraiment le m\u00eame, les priorit\u00e9s ne sont plus vraiment les m\u00eames : \u201cs\u2019il est vrai que les films ne changent pas le monde, ils peuvent changer notre rapport au monde\u201d (K. Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was presented in January 2023, and recently awarded the BAFTA and (soon) the Academy Award for Best Documentary of the Year, \u201c20 days in Mariupol\u201d is a hard-hitting, harrowing, gripping film&#8230; words fail to describe this striking feature!<\/p><p>The rare images of the siege of Mariupol we owe to them: Mstyslav Chernov and Evgeniy Maloletka, Ukrainian journalists working for the Associated Press. They were the only representatives of the international press to remain in this southern Ukrainian port city, considered strategic because of its location on the Azov Sea, after the Russian invasion in February 2022. Having covered the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Nagorno-Karabakh, the two journalists suddenly find themselves reporting from their own country, 30km from home.<\/p><p>Hunted by the Russians, for twenty days they documented the ordeal of inhabitants cut off from the world, deprived of telephone networks, electricity, water, heating and food, and exposed to constant bombardment by the Z forces. The lack of information has not only led to chaos, but also to impunity. This is why they risked their lives to break the silence and share their images, testimonies and evidence. Quite simply, this is a document for history, serving as a counter-argument to the Russian propaganda machine and earning them a Pulitzer Prize. It is not only an essential testimony to a reality, a work of courage, but also a reflection on the responsibility of a war reporter and the impact (intended and\/or real) of such journalism around the globe.<\/p><p>This is obviously a very intense and heartbreaking story, but it&rsquo;s also a documentary built like a thriller, where the pressure gradually builds and the suspense creates additional tension to the acts of war themselves, which have silenced over 450,000 voices. The narration and daily choices of the two protagonists (and their repercussions for others) increase the weight of the footage, especially when the moral and professional obligation of the press means both relaying the truth but also leaving lives behind. And beyond the frightening and appalling images, sounds and words, the power of this account is also underlying when children, even babies, gradually manage to fall asleep or remain calm in the midst of the bombings when the adults are in tears or frozen. Is this really childhood? And what are the future consequences of such a childlike experience?<\/p><p>Even if, as a matter of fact, we don&rsquo;t learn much, since these images reached the international press, we can&rsquo;t leave unscathed. Quite simply, it&rsquo;s a shock, but less for its didactic or thriller dimensions \u2013 although these are certainly critical \u2013 than for its symbolic value, which puts the \u00ab\u00a020 days\u00a0\u00bb of the title into perspective as we enter a third year of war.<\/p><p>After \u201cIn the rearview\u201d, released a few months ago, here is a new documentary on the Ukrainian tragedy. This is a hard-watch that not only brings us face to face with hell, but also feels like a siege of our conscience. It leaves us shaken, silent and almost crushed. So, even if we already know what happened in Mariupol, seeing it and feeling it are not the same thing. When you leave, you&rsquo;re not really the same person, and your priorities are no longer quite the same: \u00ab\u00a0if it&rsquo;s true that films can&rsquo;t change the world, they can change the way we relate to it\u00a0\u00bb (K.
