lucrative autour de ses personnages de comics sur grand \u00e9cran dont l\u2019un des plus embl\u00e9matiques reste in\u00e9vitablement notre araign\u00e9e du quartier. Mais le fait est que ce n\u2019est ni <em>Marvel<\/em> ni <em>Disney<\/em> qui d\u00e9tient les droits d\u2019exploitation de Spider-Man, c\u2019est <em>Sony<\/em>\u00a0! Les deux studios concurrents ont pu collaborer pour permettre \u00e0 Peter Parker d\u2019int\u00e9grer l\u2019intrigue globale de l\u2019univers cin\u00e9 Marvel, mais c\u2019est bien <em>Sony<\/em> qui r\u00e9coltait les recettes avantageuses des trois films centr\u00e9s sur le personnage, ce qui d\u00e9clencha logiquement le processus mercantile de reproduction du succ\u00e8s. Mais dans la mesure o\u00f9 l\u2019accord entre les deux studios \u00e9tablit que le personnage \u00e9volue dans l\u2019univers d\u00e9tenu par <em>Disney<\/em>, <em>Sony<\/em> ne peut pas l\u2019utiliser pour ses propres films. Et voil\u00e0 comment on en est donc arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper un univers autour de Spider-Man sans m\u00eame avoir Spider-Man dans les films.<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9sultat\u00a0? A l\u2019heure actuelle, quatre films tous plus ou moins d\u00e9cevants. Le premier \u00ab\u00a0Venom\u00a0\u00bb r\u00e9ussissait une \u2018<em>origin-story\u2019<\/em> correcte quand sa suite directe \u00ab\u00a0Venom 2\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Morbius\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019imposaient ensuite comme deux des films de comics les plus cataclysmiques. C\u2019est donc dans ce contexte difficile (sans oublier une p\u00e9riode de tr\u00e8s faible fr\u00e9quentation aux USA) que sort ce quatri\u00e8me opus. \u00ab\u00a0Madame Web\u00a0\u00bb est ainsi une nouvelle \u2018<em>origin-story<\/em>\u2019 se concentrant sur une ambulanci\u00e8re qui va d\u00e9couvrir son don de prescience au gr\u00e9 d\u2019aventures entre Manhattan et l\u2019Amazonie. Mais le film sert \u00e9galement d\u2019introduction \u00e0 des personnages li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de Spider-Man, en particulier trois jeunes filles dont le futur devrait leur procurer des pouvoirs \u00e0 la Spidey.<\/p><p>La faiblesse des pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents films de cet univers mort-n\u00e9 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 une absence d\u2019attentes quelconques sur ce nouveau projet et nous fait donc automatiquement relativiser la qualit\u00e9 de \u00ab\u00a0Madame Web\u00a0\u00bb. En soi, le film s\u2019av\u00e8re \u2018meilleur\u2019 que les deux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents avec un concept int\u00e9ressant proche d\u2019une intrigue \u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0Terminator\u00a0\u00bb, quelques bons moments, et une bonne alchimie propre \u00e0 un \u2018<em>teen-movie<\/em>\u2019.<\/p><p>Car oui la dimension super-h\u00e9ro\u00efque est quasiment absente de ce film qui cherche avant tout \u00e0 introduire des personnages tr\u00e8s (tr\u00e8s) secondaires de l\u2019univers comics et ajoute une touche f\u00e9minine avec un trio d\u2019adolescentes jou\u00e9es par (la tr\u00e8s en vogue actuellement) Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O\u2019Connor, et Isabela Merced (n\u2019avaient-ils r\u00e9ellement plus de place dans leur sc\u00e9nario pour ajouter une Asiatique\u00a0?) autour d\u2019une Dakota Johnson un peu perdue, tout comme Adam Scott et un Tahar Rahim particuli\u00e8rement risible. Il faut dire que le sc\u00e9nario ne donne pas vraiment d\u2019\u00e9paisseur \u00e0 aucun personnage.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s avoir sign\u00e9 des propositions int\u00e9ressantes en s\u00e9rie (Collateral; Anatomie d\u2019un Scandal), S.J. Clarkson s\u2019attaque directement \u00e0 un gros budget hollywoodien pour son premier long-m\u00e9trage et signe un film de super-h\u00e9ros qui visuellement semble tout droit sorti des ann\u00e9es 1990-2000 et peine \u00e0 accrocher avec une protagoniste qui ne cesse d\u2019expliquer la situation, un antagoniste particuli\u00e8rement creux et une conclusion tout bonnement ridicule. D\u2019autant que le prologue s\u2019av\u00e8re absolument inutile, d\u2019une part pour sa mise en sc\u00e8ne g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, mais surtout d\u2019autre part parce que ses sc\u00e8nes sont ensuite r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es plus tard dans l\u2019intrigue \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019on d\u00e9couvre le pass\u00e9 trouble de la protagoniste (ce qui est bien plus int\u00e9ressant que directement nous plonger dans une s\u00e9quence d\u00e9connect\u00e9e du reste).<\/p><p>Dans l\u2019ensemble, l\u2019intrigue manque cruellement d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat, les personnages de d\u00e9veloppement et la mise en sc\u00e8ne d\u2019id\u00e9es. \u00ab\u00a0Madame Web\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019est ainsi pas forc\u00e9ment le d\u00e9sastre annonc\u00e9 par tous, mais reste incontestablement un film bien pauvre. Alors certes <em>Sony<\/em> budg\u00e8te plut\u00f4t raisonnablement, on est loin des $200+M des productions <em>Marvel<\/em>, mais \u00e7a reste $80M gaspill\u00e9s dans un film vite vu et vite oubli\u00e9 symptomatique des errements des studios qui s\u2019engouffrent aveugl\u00e9ment dans le succ\u00e8s des autres.<\/p><p>Mais cet univers Spidey sans Spidey n\u2019est pas encore termin\u00e9 avec encore deux autres sorties cette ann\u00e9e, la suite \u00ab\u00a0Venom 3\u00a0\u00bb et puis \u00ab\u00a0Kraven le chasseur\u00a0\u00bb qui semble le projet le plus all\u00e9chant de cet univers aussi bien sur le fond que la forme avec J.C. But the thing is, neither <em>Marvel<\/em> nor <em>Disney<\/em> owns Spider-Man&rsquo;s licensing rights but <em>Sony<\/em>! The two rival studios may have worked together to bring Peter Parker into the overall plot of the <em>Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/em>, but it was <em>Sony<\/em> who enjoyed the lucrative revenues from the three films centered on the character, which logically triggered the mercantile process of replicating success. But since the agreement between the two studios stipulates that the character evolves in the universe owned by <em>Disney<\/em>, <em>Sony<\/em> cannot use him for its own films. And that&rsquo;s how we ended up with a universe built around Spider-Man, without even having Spider-Man in the films.<\/p><p>So far, this led to four films, all more or less disappointing. The first \u201cVenom\u201d was a decent origin story, while its direct sequel \u201cVenom 2\u201d and then \u201cMorbius\u201d were two of the most cataclysmic comic-book movies ever made. So, it&rsquo;s in this challenging context (not to mention a period of very low box office in the U.S.) that this fourth installment is released. \u201cMadame Web\u201d is another origin story focusing on a paramedic who discovers her gift of foresight through adventures between Manhattan and the Amazon. But the film also serves as an introduction to characters linked to the Spider-Man story, in particular three young girls whose future should bring them Spidey-like powers.<\/p><p>The weakness of the previous films in this stillborn universe has created an absence of any kind of expectations for this new project, and automatically makes us put the quality of \u201cMadame Web\u201d into perspective. On its own, the film proves to be &lsquo;better&rsquo; than the previous two, with an interesting concept akin to a \u201cTerminator\u201d-style plot, a few good moments, and the right chemistry for a &lsquo;teen-movie&rsquo;.<\/p><p>Indeed, the superheroic dimension is largely missing from this film, which seeks above all to introduce very (very) secondary characters from the comic book universe, and adds a feminine note with a trio of teenage girls played by (the currently very fashionable) Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O&rsquo;Connor, and Isabela Merced (how did they not find a way to add an Asian girl in this script?) alongside a slightly lost Dakota Johnson, as well as Adam Scott and a particularly silly Tahar Rahim. Let&rsquo;s face it, the script doesn&rsquo;t really give any of the characters any depth.<\/p><p>After a few interesting series credits (Collateral; Anatomy of a Scandal), S.J. Clarkson goes straight for a big Hollywood budget for her first feature film, and delivers a superhero movie that visually looks like it&rsquo;s straight out of the 1990s-2000s, and struggles to grab on with a protagonist who never stops explaining the situation, a particularly weak antagonist and a simply preposterous conclusion. Not to mention the fact that the prologue proves absolutely useless, both in terms of its general direction and because its scenes are then repeated later in the story as we discover the protagonist&rsquo;s troubled past (which is far more interesting than just throwing us into a sequence disconnected from the rest).<\/p><p>Overall, the plot is woefully lacking in interest, the characters in development and the direction in ideas. \u201cMadame Web\u201d isn&rsquo;t necessarily the disaster everyone is calling it, but it&rsquo;s undeniably a very poor film. Admittedly, <em>Sony<\/em>&lsquo;s budget is quite reasonable \u2013 a far cry from the $200+M of Marvel productions \u2013 but it&rsquo;s still $80M wasted on a film that&rsquo;s quickly seen and quickly forgotten, symptomatic of the erring ways of studios that blindly jump on the bandwagon of other people&rsquo;s success.<\/p><p>But this Spidey universe without Spidey isn&rsquo;t over yet, with two more releases this year, the sequel \u201cVenom 3\u201d and then \u201cKraven the Hunter\u201d, which seems to be the most promising project in this universe, both in terms of substance and style, with J.C. Chandor behind the camera &#8230;<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
