r\u00e9uni le couple Brad Pitt et Angelina Jolie, \u00ab\u00a0Mr. &amp; Mrs. Smith\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9tait une s\u00e9rie des ann\u00e9es 1990 dans laquelle deux agents secrets acceptaient un mariage arrang\u00e9 pour combiner leurs talents afin de r\u00e9ussir des missions \u00e0 haut risque. Un point de d\u00e9part diff\u00e9rent du film, et que reprend cette nouvelle it\u00e9ration distribu\u00e9e sur <em>Prime Video<\/em>.<\/p><p>La s\u00e9rie qui devait \u00e0 l\u2019origine r\u00e9unir deux des auteurs-interpr\u00e8tes les plus en vogue du moment Donald Glover (Atlanta) et Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), avant que celle-ci ne quitte le navire, se r\u00e9v\u00e8le nettement plus subtile que le film de 2005. Elle s\u2019ancre d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part plus dans la com\u00e9die que dans l\u2019action d\u2019une part, et d\u2019autre part son ambition est ailleurs en renouvelant le genre de la com\u00e9die de couple. Elle b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie pour cela de l\u2019alchimie entre Maya Erskine et Donald Glover \u2013 qui confirme tout en d\u00e9contraction et en \u00e9l\u00e9gance qu\u2019il est bel et bien l\u2019un des acteurs les plus \u2018<em>cool\u2019<\/em> du moment \u2013 autour d\u2019une v\u00e9ritable pluie de \u2018<em>guests\u2019<\/em> (du cam\u00e9o au r\u00f4le secondaire) avec notamment\u00a0Paul Dano, John Turturro, Wagner Moura, Parker Posey, Ron Perlman, Sarah Paulson, Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd, Eiza Gonzalez ou encore Michaela Coel.<\/p><p>Mais si la s\u00e9rie r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un certain m\u00e9lange de charme, d\u2019humour et d\u2019action, elle peut d\u00e9cevoir pour son intrigue d\u2019espionnage car le c\u0153ur du sujet reste avant tout son \u00e9tude introspective du couple. Le contexte d\u2019agents secrets, d\u2019assassins, et de missions clandestines n\u2019est alors qu\u2019un cadre pour une r\u00e9flexion sur les relations conjugales, l\u2019amour et le d\u00e9sir o\u00f9 les protagonistes incarnent finalement le malaise \u00e9motionnel et social de leur g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Plus profonde qu\u2019il n\u2019y para\u00eet, la s\u00e9rie joue ainsi d\u2019un ton l\u00e9ger \u00e0 contre-courant de son genre habituellement rythm\u00e9 et explosif. Ici le rythme est lent et le quotidien parfois tr\u00e8s banal, c\u2019est profond quand on ne s\u2019y attend pas et inversement.<\/p><p>C\u2019est clairement d\u00e9cal\u00e9, et ce style d\u2019humour n\u2019accroche pas toujours, d\u2019autant que la s\u00e9rie varie pour cela trop les tons, naviguant entre profond et banal ou s\u00e9rieux et ridicule. Dans l\u2019ensemble \u00ab\u00a0Mr. &amp; Mrs. Smith\u00a0\u00bb ne cr\u00e9e s\u00fbrement pas assez de coh\u00e9sion, cela vaut pour les tons adopt\u00e9s mais aussi pour la structure m\u00eame de la s\u00e9rie avec un premier et un dernier \u00e9pisode \u00e0 la fois intrigant et palpitant mais un milieu tr\u00e8s creux. Certes il vaut mieux cela que l\u2019inverse pour nous permettre de rentrer dans l\u2019intrigue et d\u2019en garder un bon souvenir. Mais le fait est que le premier et dernier \u00e9pisode b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient d\u2019un sch\u00e9ma s\u00e9riel et une forte tension avec un \u2018<em>cliffhanger\u2019<\/em> efficace \u00e0 la fin. A different starting point from the movie, and one that this new adaptation, available on <em>Prime Video<\/em>, picks up on.<\/p><p>Originally designed to bring together two of today&rsquo;s leading writer-performers, Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), before the latter left the project, the series turns out to be far more subtle than the 2005 film. From the outset, the series is rooted more in comedy than action, and its ambition lies elsewhere, in renewing the couples&rsquo; comedy genre. To achieve this, it draws on the chemistry between Maya Erskine and Donald Glover \u2013 confirming in a casually elegant way that he is indeed one of the coolest actors of the moment \u2013 as well as a flurry of guests (from cameos to supporting roles) including Paul Dano, John Turturro, Wagner Moura, Parker Posey, Ron Perlman, Sarah Paulson, Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd, Eiza Gonzalez and Michaela Coel.<\/p><p>But while the series succeeds in creating a particular blend of charm, humor and action, it can be disappointing for its espionage plot, since the heart of the matter remains above all its introspective exploration of the couple. The backdrop of secret agents, assassins and covert missions is merely a canvas for a reflection on marital relationships, love and desire, where the protagonists ultimately embody the emotional and social malaise of their generation. Deeper than it seems, the series plays with a light-hearted tone that goes against the tide of its usually fast-paced and explosive genre. Here, the pace is slow and the everyday is sometimes very mundane; it&rsquo;s profound when you least expect it, and vice versa.<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s clearly offbeat, and this kind of humor doesn&rsquo;t always click, all the more so as the series shifts tones too much, navigating between the profound and the banal, or the serious and the ridiculous. All in all, \u201cMr. &amp; Mrs. Smith\u201d certainly doesn&rsquo;t create enough cohesion, not only in the tones adopted but also in the very arc of the series, with a first and last episode that are both intriguing and thrilling, but a very dull middle. Of course, it&rsquo;s better that way than the other way around, to get us into the plot and keep us coming back for more. But the fact remains that the first and last episodes offer a serialized pattern and high tension, with an effective cliffhanger at the end. The others, on the other hand, are more like soap opera episodes, where there&rsquo;s a thread running through the characters and their gradual development as they meet new people (although the many ellipses diminish the impact of the characters&rsquo;
