un couple o\u00f9 la diff\u00e9rence d\u2019\u00e2ge est flagrante, le titre renvoie \u00e0 la situation scandaleuse inspir\u00e9e de l\u2019affaire Mary Kay Letourneau ou un amour interdit autant que passionn\u00e9 entre une femme mari\u00e9e et un enfant de treize ans. Un parfum de scandale qui a conduit la femme par la case prison, enflamm\u00e9 la presse et cr\u00e9\u00e9 un tourbillon haineux auquel la passion des amants a surv\u00e9cu. Vingt ans plus tard, une c\u00e9l\u00e8bre actrice vient rencontrer celle qu\u2019elle va interpr\u00e9ter \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran pour \u2018cr\u00e9er du vrai\u2019, et s\u2019engage alors un v\u00e9ritable face-\u00e0-face triangulaire entre la femme, le mari, et l\u2019actrice.<\/p><p>Premier long-m\u00e9trage de la sc\u00e9nariste Samy Burch, \u00ab May December \u00bb est un double film sur le processus d\u2019acteur et sur une \u00e9tude de personnage(s) qui met autant en sc\u00e8ne un questionnement artistique que la complexit\u00e9 humaine. Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en comp\u00e9tition officielle \u00e0 Cannes et nomm\u00e9 aux Oscars pour son sc\u00e9nario, le film d\u00e9sar\u00e7onne autant qu\u2019il fascine en brouillant la fronti\u00e8re entre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et fiction. C\u2019est un peu le \u00ab T\u00e1r \u00bb de cette ann\u00e9e avec une intrigue qui laisse un vide \u00e0 combler \u2013 ici en ne traitant pas son sujet \u2018de scandale\u2019 frontalement \u2013 et donc des points d\u2019interrogations dessus. C\u2019est aussi un r\u00e9cit qui fait \u00e9voluer notre perception tout au long de son cheminement avec une structure sc\u00e9naristique propre \u00e0 l\u2019enqu\u00eate journalistique qui d\u00e9peint progressivement un tableau d\u2019ensemble qui nous construit donc une r\u00e9alit\u00e9, avant que celle-ci ne soit au fur et \u00e0 mesure d\u00e9construite par un ensemble de points de vue divergents.<\/p><p>Chaque point de vue cr\u00e9e ainsi sa propre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et chaque personnage en propose donc une. L\u2019\u00e9criture fine de ces personnages complexes nous les fait alors voir progressivement sous un jour diff\u00e9rent et cette multiplication des points de vue se refl\u00e8te aussi bien dans l\u2019enqu\u00eate, qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019image avec un jeu de miroirs et de reflets qui brouille \u00e0 nouveau la perception du spectateur : qui regarde qui ? sous quel angle ? sous quel point de vue ? est-ce la perception du personnage ? ou celle de la cam\u00e9ra ? Ces jeux de miroirs et de doubles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran captur\u00e9s dans une lumi\u00e8re particuli\u00e8rement poisseuse et suffocante par le chef op\u00e9rateur Christopher Blauvelt (First Cow) cr\u00e9ent une certaine distance avec les personnages et une atmosph\u00e8re presque trop artificielle limitant in\u00e9vitablement la charge \u00e9motionnelle du film.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7616 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Pour son dixi\u00e8me film, Todd Haynes met en sc\u00e8ne une relation en miroir, ambigu\u00eb et instable entre des personnages aux forces et faiblesses changeantes, entre le mod\u00e8le et son double en devenir. Si mise en ab\u00eeme il y a, ce n\u2019est pas avec un film dans le film mais plut\u00f4t une actrice jouant une actrice. L\u2019un des enjeux du film est ainsi de montrer ces deux h\u00e9ro\u00efnes comme interchangeables. D\u2019abord visuellement avec la transformation progressive de Natalie Portman (qui produit le film avec son associ\u00e9e Sophie Mas) \u00e0 travers son visage et sa posture se rapprochant de Julianne Moore\u00a0; et ensuite avec l\u2019effet miroir entre ces deux femmes pleines de m\u00e9fiance et d\u2019hostilit\u00e9 envers l\u2019autre qui font finalement passer chacune leurs int\u00e9r\u00eats personnels avant tout et deviennent ainsi chacune le reflet de l\u2019autre\u00a0: la femme transgressive devenant progressivement l\u2019actrice et vice versa. Au final tout le monde est en repr\u00e9sentation de ce th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la normalit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9alisateur de \u00ab\u00a0Carol\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Dark Waters\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019attache \u00e0 d\u2019abord inspirer la confiance et l\u2019identification dans le personnage de l\u2019actrice qui guide le spectateur dans la maison de ce couple \u00e0 scandale en tant que personne tout \u00e0 fait sens\u00e9e. Attentive, discr\u00e8te et s\u00e9ductrice, elle colle donc \u00e0 son mod\u00e8le et enqu\u00eate \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re. Une fois la situation \u00e9tablie elle peut alors d\u00e9router par son comportement \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019on d\u00e9couvre comment elle utilise les personnages qu\u2019elle rencontre. Il met ainsi en sc\u00e8ne un personnage difficile \u00e0 cerner qui demande constamment au spectateur de r\u00e9\u00e9valuer sa position vis-\u00e0-vis du (et des) personnage(s).<\/p><p>Et il joue sur cette atmosph\u00e8re de doute et de tension avec une reprise de la musique sign\u00e9e Michel Legrand pour le film \u00ab\u00a0Le Messager\u00a0\u00bb (1971) de Joseph Losey dont les quelques notes ponctuent l\u2019intrigue et lui donne son ton sp\u00e9cifique. Une intrigue qui s\u2019appuie \u00e9galement sur des parall\u00e8les symboliques aussi bien avec la chasse \u00e0 laquelle s\u2019adonne la m\u00e8re en solitaire, que la m\u00e9taphore de la chenille et du papillon \u00e0 un moment bien sp\u00e9cifique\u00a0: celui de la fin du lyc\u00e9e et de la remise des dipl\u00f4mes synonyme de l\u2019envol des enfants et du passage \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge adulte que leur p\u00e8re (jou\u00e9 par Charles Melton) n\u2019a jamais connu.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0May December\u00a0\u00bb explore ainsi toute une vie de non-dits dans une rivalit\u00e9 mim\u00e9tique peupl\u00e9s de secrets, vrais ou faux, o\u00f9 il est autant question de transgression que d\u2019emprise \u00e0 travers le prisme du temps \u2013 20 ans plus tard \u2013 et celui du regard ext\u00e9rieur \u2013 d\u2019abord de l\u2019actrice puis du n\u00f4tre \u2013 d\u00e9montrant la difficult\u00e9 (voire l\u2019impossibilit\u00e9) de pleinement comprendre une autre personne. Le sujet n\u2019est finalement pas directement la relation transgressive (et ill\u00e9gale) au centre de l\u2019intrigue mais plut\u00f4t une r\u00e9flexion sur la mani\u00e8re de la raconter, de la restituer. C\u2019est un portrait de femmes et d\u2019actrices qui explore l\u2019impressionnante capacit\u00e9 humaine \u00e0 ne jamais se regarder en face. The scandal led to the woman&rsquo;s imprisonment, inflamed the press and created a whirlwind of hatred that the lovers&rsquo; passion survived. Twenty years later, a famous actress comes to meet the woman she&rsquo;s going to play on screen to \u2018create something real\u2019, and a genuine three-way face-off begins between the wife, the husband and the actress.<\/p><p>Screenwriter Samy Burch&rsquo;s first feature film, \u201cMay December\u201d is a double drama about the acting process and a character(s) study, as much about artistic exploration as it is about human complexity. Selected for official competition at Cannes and nominated for an Oscar for its screenplay, the film is as unsettling as it is fascinating, blurring the line between reality and fiction. It&rsquo;s sort of this year&rsquo;s \u201cT\u00e1r\u201d, with a plot that leaves a gap to be filled \u2013 in this case, by not dealing with its \u2018scandalous\u2019 subject head-on \u2013 and thus question marks over it. It&rsquo;s also a story that changes our perception along the way, with a journalistic investigation-style structure that progressively depicts an overall picture that creates a reality for us, before this is gradually deconstructed by a set of divergent points of view.<\/p><p>Each point of view creates its own reality, and each character therefore offers its own. This multiplicity of points of view is reflected both in the investigation and in the frame, with an interplay of mirrors and reflections that once again blurs the viewer&rsquo;s perception: who&rsquo;s looking at whom? from what angle? from what point of view? is it the character&rsquo;s perception? or the camera&rsquo;s? This interplay of mirrors and doubles on screen, captured in particularly suffocating, greasy light by cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt (First Cow), creates a certain distance with the characters and an almost too artificial atmosphere, unavoidably limiting the film&rsquo;s emotional impact.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7616 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Snapshot_727-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>For his tenth feature, Todd Haynes brings to life a mirror-like relationship, ambiguous and volatile between characters with shifting strengths and weaknesses, the model and her double in the making. If there is a <em>mise en ab\u00eeme<\/em>, this is not with a film within a film, but rather with an actress playing an actress. One of the film&rsquo;s challenges is therefore to show these two heroines as interchangeable. Firstly, visually, with the gradual transformation of Natalie Portman (who produces the film with her associate Sophie Mas) through her Julianne Moore-like face and stance; and secondly, with the mirror effect between these two women, full of mistrust and hostility towards each other, who ultimately both put their own personal interests first and thus become reflections of each other: the transgressive woman gradually becoming the actress and vice versa. In the end, everyone is acting in this theater of normality.<\/p><p>The director of \u201cCarol\u201d and \u201cDark Waters\u201d takes care to inspire at first confidence and identification in the character of the actress who takes the viewer into the home of this scandal-hit couple as an entirely sensible person. Careful, discreet and seductive, she sticks to her model and investigates in her own way. Once the situation is established, her behavior can then be disconcerting as we discover how she uses the characters she encounters. In this way, he creates a character hard to grasp, constantly asking the viewer to re-evaluate their view of the character(s).<\/p><p>And he builds on this climate of doubt and tension with a rendition of Michel Legrand&rsquo;s score for Joseph Losey&rsquo;s film \u201cThe Go-Between\u201d (1971), whose few notes punctuate the plot and set its specific tone. This plot also draws on symbolic parallels, from the mother&rsquo;s solitary hunt to the metaphor of the caterpillar and the butterfly at a very specific point in time: the end of high school and the graduation ceremony, synonymous with the children&rsquo;s take-off and transition to adulthood that their father (played by Charles Melton) never had.<\/p><p>\u201cMay December\u201d thereby explores a lifetime of unspoken truths in a mimetic rivalry filled with secrets, both true and false, in which transgression is as much a question as control, through the prism of time \u2013 20 years later \u2013 and of the outside gaze \u2013 first the actress&rsquo;s, then our own \u2013 revealing the difficulty (if not impossibility) of fully understanding another person. In the end, the theme is not so much the transgressive (and illegal) relationship at the heart of the plot, but rather a reflection on the way it is told and portrayed. This is a story of women and actresses that explores the impressive human capacity to never look at oneself in the face. In the end, it&rsquo;s a brilliant script that nonetheless keeps the viewer at a distance, and settles for a conclusion that&rsquo;s certainly useful, but rather dull in comparison with the
