l\u2019univers connect\u00e9 am\u00e9ricain inspir\u00e9 de la mythologie japonaise des kaij\u016b (litt\u00e9ralement \u2018b\u00eates myst\u00e9rieuses\u2019 puis devenues des monstres g\u00e9ants). Bienvenue donc dans le MonsterVerse d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par le studio <em>Legendary Pictures<\/em> et distribu\u00e9 par <em>Warner<\/em> sur le grand \u00e9cran, avec d\u00e9j\u00e0 quatre films et un cinqui\u00e8me pr\u00e9vu pour cette ann\u00e9e, et <em>Apple <\/em>c\u00f4t\u00e9 TV donc, avec cette s\u00e9rie cr\u00e9\u00e9e par Chris Black et Matt Fraction.<\/p><p>Alors que le film japonais actuellement en salles nous embarque dans un ton plus dramatique, plus sombre et plus m\u00e9taphorique des ravages de la seconde guerre mondiale notamment sur le plan nucl\u00e9aire, l\u2019univers am\u00e9ricain de ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es s\u2019attache plus \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper un univers fantastique, un ton l\u00e9ger, et proposer surtout un grand spectacle divertissant. C\u2019est donc dans ce contexte que la s\u00e9rie \u00ab\u00a0Monarch\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019inscrit et s\u2019impose comme meilleure histoire du MonsterVerse de tr\u00e8s loin. Elle s\u2019av\u00e8re assez \u00e9conome en termes de monstres \u2013 bien qu\u2019elle ne l\u00e9sine pas sur les moyens et propose au moins une grosse sc\u00e8ne de kaij\u016b dans chacun de ses 10 \u00e9pisodes \u2013 et se concentre finalement plus sur son intrigue et ses personnages humains. Elle r\u00e9ussit ainsi \u00e0 faire cohabiter action grand spectacle et dimension plus intimiste gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un sc\u00e9nario particuli\u00e8rement bien \u00e9crit o\u00f9 il n\u2019y a pas fondamentalement de m\u00e9chants, o\u00f9 m\u00eame les sc\u00e8nes d\u2019exposition sont int\u00e9gr\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de mani\u00e8re coh\u00e9rente et o\u00f9 l\u2019univers du monstre ne sert plus qu\u2019\u00e0 refl\u00e9ter les horreurs de la guerre, la parano\u00efa, ou la crise climatique mais o\u00f9 viennent s\u2019ajouter les r\u00e9percussions traumatiques, les questions de filiation et du bien-fond\u00e9 de chaque lutte, sans oublier l\u2019\u00e9volution de nos soci\u00e9t\u00e9s post-pand\u00e9mie entre confinement et conspirationnisme. Bref, un sc\u00e9nario intelligent qui introduit des personnages captivants dans une riche toile de fond.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0Monarch\u00a0\u00bb joue sur le parall\u00e8le entre deux \u00e9poques avec une intrigue divis\u00e9e entre 2015 (un an apr\u00e8s la destruction de San Francisco dans \u00ab\u00a0Godzilla\u00a0\u00bb de 2014) et les ann\u00e9es 1950-60 (encore avant le film \u00ab\u00a0Kong Skull Island\u00a0\u00bb). Mais si la s\u00e9rie parcours l\u2019univers des films \u00e0 travers sa double chronologie, elle cr\u00e9e sa propre intrigue ne n\u00e9cessitant donc pas de les avoir vus.\u00a0 Sa double chronologie met donc en sc\u00e8ne \u00e0 chaque \u00e9poque un trio de personnages r\u00e9uni par une prouesse de casting avec Kurt Russell et son fils Wyatt Russell interpr\u00e9tant chacun le personnage dans les deux \u00e9poques. L\u2019intrigue est alors au d\u00e9part divis\u00e9e entre une enqu\u00eate familiale avec deux fr\u00e8re et s\u0153ur sur les traces de leur p\u00e8re, et une enqu\u00eate scientifique aupr\u00e8s des futurs fondateurs de Monarch \u2013 cette organisation secr\u00e8te dans la veine d\u2019une CIA anti-monstres \u2013 sur les traces de myst\u00e9rieuses radiations. Cette dualit\u00e9 temporelle se refl\u00e8te \u00e9galement dans la dimension bilingue de la s\u00e9rie qui met autant en sc\u00e8ne la culture japonaise et am\u00e9ricaine et r\u00e9unit ainsi admirablement bien dans une m\u00eame histoire, celle de l\u2019univers qu\u2019elle adapte, \u00e0 savoir une mythologie nippone adapt\u00e9e et exploit\u00e9e par Hollywood.<\/p><p>\u00ab Monarch \u00bb n\u2019\u00e9vite n\u00e9anmoins pas certaines conventions sch\u00e9matiques, certains plans sont, de plus, moins flamboyants que dans les films (les sc\u00e8nes en Alaska et au Sahara font assez \u2018studio\u2019), et la s\u00e9rie s\u2019av\u00e8re profond\u00e9ment moins int\u00e9ressante et palpitante quand elle ne joue pas sur sa double chronologie. Mais elle nous offre de la SF-fantasy, du suspense, de l\u2019\u00e9motion, de l\u2019action avec des personnages d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s, une intrigue captivante et des monstres en plus dans tout cela. Welcome to the MonsterVerse developed by <em>Legendary Pictures<\/em> and distributed by <em>Warner<\/em> on the big screen, with already four movies and a fifth one set to release this year, and then on <em>Apple TV<\/em>, with this series created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction.<\/p><p>While the Japanese film currently in cinemas takes us on a more dramatic, darker and more metaphorical journey through the aftermath of the Second World War, particularly in terms of nuclear power, the American MonsterVerse of recent years has focused more on developing a fantasy universe, a light-hearted tone and, above all, a great, entertaining spectacle. It&rsquo;s in this context that the \u201cMonarch\u201d series stands out by far as the best story in the MonsterVerse. It proves quite parsimonious in terms of monsters \u2013 although it doesn&rsquo;t cut corners and offers at least one big kaij\u016b scene in each of its 10 episodes \u2013 and ultimately focuses more on its plot and its human characters. As a result, it succeeds in blending grand spectacle action with a more intimate dimension, thanks to a particularly well-written script in which there are no real villains, where even the exposition scenes are coherently integrated into the story, and where the monster universe not only mirrors the horrors of war, paranoia or the climate crisis, but also the traumatic repercussions, issues of parentage and the rightness of each struggle, not to mention the evolution of our post-pandemic societies from lockdown to conspiracy. In short, this is a clever script that introduces captivating characters against a rich backdrop.<\/p><p>\u201cMonarch\u201d plays on the parallel between two eras, with a plot divided between 2015 (a year after San Francisco&rsquo;s destruction in 2014&rsquo;s \u201cGodzilla\u201d) and the 1950s-60s (prior to the film \u201cKong Skull Island\u201d). But while the series explores the universe of the movies through its double timeline, it also creates its own plot, with no need to have seen any of the movies before.\u00a0 The double chronology features a trio of characters in each era, united by a unique casting trick, with Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell each playing the character in both eras. The plot is thus initially divided between a family investigation with two siblings on the trail of their father, and a scientific investigation with the future founders of Monarch \u2013 this secret organization in the vein of an anti-monster CIA \u2013 on the trail of mysterious radiations. This temporal duality is also reflected in the bilingual dimension of the series, which showcases both Japanese and American culture and thus admirably brings together in the same story the universe it adapts, namely a Japanese mythology adapted and explored by Hollywood.<\/p><p>Yet \u201cMonarch\u201d doesn&rsquo;t avoid certain conventional tropes, some shots are also less stunning than in the films (the Alaska and Sahara scenes look rather studio-like), and the series proves far less interesting and thrilling when it&rsquo;s not relying on its double timeline. But it does offer Scifi-fantasy, suspense, emotion and action, with well-developed characters, a captivating plot and monsters to add to it all. Ultimately, this is an excellent series, both spectacular and well crafted, which manages a brilliant first season.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s
