Vladimir Poutine a envahi l\u2019Ukraine ! D\u00e9j\u00e0 22 mois de guerre ! Une guerre qui a depuis longtemps d\u00e9pass\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res projections et dont les impacts resteront maintenant grav\u00e9s pendant des d\u00e9cennies. Avec plus de 7 millions de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s et 8 millions de d\u00e9plac\u00e9s internes, l\u2019un des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes majeurs des premiers mois de cette guerre reste l\u2019\u00e9vacuation massive de civils. C\u2019est ce dont t\u00e9moigne ce documentaire cru et touchant pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au Festival de Cannes : un road-movie courageux au dispositif simple de voiture-cam\u00e9ra, un convoi-documentaire alliant l\u2019acte \u00e0 la parole.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">A bord de son mini-van surcharg\u00e9, le r\u00e9alisateur polonais Maciek Hamela sillonne ainsi les routes d\u2019Ukraine dans les premi\u00e8res semaines de guerre pour aider les habitants \u00e0 fuir. Le conducteur-r\u00e9alisateur se fraie ainsi un chemin entre les champs de mines pour \u00e9vacuer un peuple voisin forc\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019exode. Son v\u00e9hicule devient alors leur premier espace de confession s\u00fbr et intime, une zone de confiance et confidences. Alors que l\u2019\u00e9motion circule dans l\u2019habitacle, il filme leurs conversations. Leurs histoires n\u2019ont pas toutes la m\u00eame port\u00e9e \u00e9motionnelle mais il les rend toutes audibles en captant leur sinc\u00e9rit\u00e9, spontan\u00e9it\u00e9 et leur loquacit\u00e9. Les \u00e9changes, confessions, larmes et parfois rires s\u2019encha\u00eenent sous l\u2019\u0153il d\u2019une cam\u00e9ra qui dispara\u00eet presque dans ce refuge les emmenant vers la s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Chaque histoire est souvent racont\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re fois entre des personnes qui ne se connaissent pas, c\u2019est donc aussi une histoire de rencontres qui forment un grand r\u00e9cit, celui de la transition du pass\u00e9 vers le futur. C\u2019est en effet dans ce mini-van que ces Ukrainiens deviennent des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s. Cela repr\u00e9sente un grand saut vers l\u2019inconnu qui fait r\u00e9sonner entre elles des sc\u00e8nes de retrouvailles et de s\u00e9paration et que chacun accepte diff\u00e9remment : jusqu\u2019\u00e0 se r\u00e9jouir de partir en voyage ! Dans un tel r\u00e9cit d\u2019exode, le t\u00e9moignage des enfants occupe une place centrale tant ils s\u2019expriment sans filtre de peur ou de m\u00e9fiance.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Et c\u2019est bien \u00e0 travers leurs visages et leurs comportements que toute l\u2019ampleur de ce qu\u2019ils ont travers\u00e9 se refl\u00e8te comme le sugg\u00e8re le titre fran\u00e7ais renvoyant \u00e0 l\u2019enracinement\/ancrage de la guerre dans leur \u00e9ducation. Le film t\u00e9moigne de diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9tapes de la guerre, de la premi\u00e8re vague de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019encerclement des villes de Kiev et Chernihiv, puis aux batailles de Kharkiv et Marioupol. Mais si elle est bien omnipr\u00e9sente dans les discours, la guerre demeure hors-champ uniquement visible \u00e0 travers les fen\u00eatres du mini-van o\u00f9 l\u2019on en aper\u00e7oit les stigmates, des b\u00e2timents d\u00e9truits aux routes coup\u00e9es en passant par les check-points r\u00e9guliers et les \u00e9paves calcin\u00e9es de chars. A travers ces fen\u00eatres, le d\u00e9cor de la guerre d\u00e9file ainsi tel une toile de fond des conversations qu\u2019il capture. Il nous fait traverser les horreurs de la guerre en mouvement et la trag\u00e9die de l\u2019exode en huis-clos par un regard port\u00e9 vers l\u2019arri\u00e8re filmant la guerre en diff\u00e9r\u00e9.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Cette odyss\u00e9e de transition entre leur pass\u00e9 et leur futur cr\u00e9e deux temporalit\u00e9s illustr\u00e9es dans ce quasi 100% huis-clos par deux uniques prises de vues : l\u2019une tourn\u00e9e vers l\u2019avant du v\u00e9hicule, vers ce qu\u2019ils traversent et quittent et in fine vers ce qui les attend, leur futur ; et l\u2019autre vers les si\u00e8ges arri\u00e8re et les t\u00e9moignages de guerre \u00e0 l\u2019image du titre original et anglais (\u00ab In the Rearview \u00bb). Le r\u00e9alisateur est alors \u00e0 la fois chauffeur, organisateur, b\u00e9n\u00e9vole, interpr\u00e8te, confident. Toujours \u00e0 la recherche de solutions, il est discret mais pas neutre et ne fait pas de commentaire. Already 22 months of war! A war that has long since gone beyond the first projections, and whose scars will remain etched for decades to come. With over 7 million refugees and 8 million internally displaced people, one of the major phenomena of the first months of this war was the large-scale evacuation of civilians. This is what this raw and moving documentary, presented at the Cannes Film Festival, bears witness to: a courageous road-movie with a simple car-camera set-up, a convoy-documentary bringing together action and words.<\/p><p>Aboard his overloaded minivan, Polish director Maciek Hamela travels the roads of Ukraine during the first weeks of the war to help the residents to flee. The driver-director makes his way through minefields to evacuate a neighboring population forced to leave. His vehicle then becomes their first safe and intimate confessional space, a zone of trust and confidences for a mosaic of passengers. As the emotion flows through the cabin, he films their conversations. Their stories do not all have the same emotional impact, but he makes them all heard by capturing their sincerity, spontaneity and talkativeness. Exchanges, confessions, tears and sometimes laughter follow one another under the eye of a camera that almost disappears in this safe haven taking them to safety.<\/p><p>Each story is often told for the first time between people who don&rsquo;t know each other, so it&rsquo;s also a story of encounters that shape a larger narrative, that of the transition from the past to the future. Indeed, it is in this minivan that these Ukrainians become refugees. It&rsquo;s a big leap into the unknown, echoing scenes of reunion and separation that everyone accepts in their own way, even to the point of looking forward to the journey! In such a tale of exodus, the children&rsquo;s testimony takes center stage, as they openly speak out without any filter of fear or mistrust.<\/p><p>And it is through their faces and behavior that the full extent of what they have been through is reflected, as the French title suggests (literally \u201cRock, Paper, Gun\u201d), referring to the deep-rootedness of the war in their upbringing. The film covers the different stages of the war, from the first wave of refugees to the siege of the cities of Kiev and Chernihiv, followed by the battles of Kharkiv and Mariupol. But while it is ever-present in the speeches, the war remains off-screen, visible only through the windows of the minivan, where we can see the aftermath, from destroyed buildings to cut-off roads, regular check-points and the scorched wrecks of tanks. Through these windows, the scenery of the war unfolds like a backdrop to the conversations he captures. He takes us through the horrors of war on the move and the tragedy of the exodus behind closed doors, filming the war after the fact.<\/p><p>This odyssey of transition between their past and their future creates two temporalities, depicted in this almost 100% behind-closed-doors film by two single shots: one looking towards the front of the vehicle, towards what they are travelling through and leaving, and ultimately towards what awaits them, their future; and the other towards the rear seats and the war stories, as in the original &amp; English title. The director is at once driver, organizer, volunteer, interpreter and confidant. Always looking for solutions, he is discreet but not neutral, and makes no comment. This is not an analytical piece, it&rsquo;s a journey into the heat of the action.<\/p><p>A powerful war story full of humanity, \u201cIn the Rearview\u201d is an engaging, moving and important multilingual documentary (Ukrainian, English, French, Polish). This emergency tale echoes a spontaneous and massive mobilization, and the historic bonding of two countries with a painful shared past&#8230; a sign of fraternity between (neighboring?)
