Mais c\u2019est bien Ridley Scott qui sort cette ann\u00e9e un film sur Napol\u00e9on tr\u00e8s critiqu\u00e9 et particuli\u00e8rement en France.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Le r\u00e9alisateur anglais avait pourtant r\u00e9ussi d\u2019excellentes \u00e9pop\u00e9es historiques par le pass\u00e9 de \u00ab Kingdom of Heaven \u00bb au \u00ab Dernier Duel \u00bb en passant par le Maximus \u00ab Gladiator \u00bb dans lequel Joaquin Phoenix (Joker ; Her) jouait d\u00e9j\u00e0 Commode. L\u2019acteur oscaris\u00e9 est de retour \u00e0 la t\u00eate d\u2019un Empire aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman ; The Son ; Mission Impossible) dans ce qui s\u2019impose plus comme une interpr\u00e9tation historique qu\u2019un biopic r\u00e9aliste de Bonaparte. Ridley Scott choisit ainsi de raconter la vie de Napol\u00e9on sous l\u2019angle de sa relation avec Jos\u00e9phine. \u201cSans elle il n\u2019est rien\u201d. D\u2019o\u00f9 de francs succ\u00e8s port\u00e9s par l\u2019amour, des succ\u00e8s co\u00fbteux au divorce et une d\u00e9faite une fois seul. Il s\u2019int\u00e9resse ainsi plus \u00e0 leur relation dysfonctionnelle qu\u2019\u00e0 son legs politique, plus \u00e0 l\u2019amant tourment\u00e9 qu\u2019au mythe. Il montre un Napol\u00e9on humain, fragile et saugrenu.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Son film porte \u00e9videmment une dimension \u00e9pique et s\u2019impose comme un grand spectacle qui nous en met plein la vue lors des impressionnantes sc\u00e8nes de batailles (en particulier celle d\u2019Austerlitz) dont les plans larges (qui auraient m\u00e9rit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre plus nombreux) nous plongent dans l\u2019immensit\u00e9 des affrontements imp\u00e9riaux de l\u2019\u00e9poque entre centaines de milliers de fantassins. Il profite du giga-budget d\u2019Apple Studios, pr\u00e8s de $200M, pour nous offrir une multitude et une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de costumes, de batailles terrestres, navales ou de cavaleries, des d\u00e9cors grandioses et une arm\u00e9e de figurants de plus de 10 000 hommes. Techniquement c\u2019est donc tr\u00e8s ma\u00eetris\u00e9, narrativement, en revanche, beaucoup moins.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">M\u00eame si l\u2019on assiste bien au premier divorce de l\u2019Empire, le film ne s\u2019attarde pas sur les implications sous-jacentes et ne parle jamais des r\u00e9formes politiques de l\u2019\u00e9poque qui ont pourtant un lien avec l\u2019histoire de Napol\u00e9on. Soit. Mais toutes les personnalit\u00e9s politiques qui d\u00e9filent, \u00e0 l\u2019instar de Tahar Rahim qui joue Barras, n\u2019ont droit qu\u2019\u00e0 quelques sc\u00e8nes sans vraiment peser sur l\u2019histoire de la figure centrale. En d\u2019autres termes, il n\u2019y a aucun second r\u00f4le tant ils sont tous rel\u00e9gu\u00e9s \u00e0 de la figuration. D\u2019autant que la transition entre les sc\u00e8nes de profonds changements historiques aux batailles \u00e9piques puis aux sc\u00e8nes conjugales manque de temps et de lien. Certes, c\u2019est un probl\u00e8me qui peut \u00eatre r\u00e9solu dans la version de 4h qui sera prochainement disponible sur Apple TV+, mais toujours-est-il que la version cin\u00e9ma en p\u00e2tit.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Dans la mesure o\u00f9 \u00ab Napol\u00e9on \u00bb se place d\u00e8s sa premi\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne loin de l\u2019objectif \u2018100% r\u00e9alisme historique\u2019 et se r\u00e9f\u00e8re plut\u00f4t aux grands tableaux connus (comme le sacre de 1804 ou la bataille dite des Pyramides, m\u00eame s\u2019il omet le fameux Goya) il aurait peut-\u00eatre mieux valu ne pas utiliser le nom du protagoniste comme titre ce qui sugg\u00e8re plut\u00f4t un r\u00e9cit fid\u00e8le. \u00ab Captain Bicorne \u00bb aurait alors pu \u00eatre une bonne r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tation historique du personnage Napol\u00e9on. Pourquoi ne pas alors accentuer cela et en profiter pour cr\u00e9er des relations plus d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es entre les personnages comme par exemple avec son officier en second. Si ce personnage avait \u00e9t\u00e9 le m\u00eame tout au long du film, cela aurait pu cr\u00e9er une relation int\u00e9ressante, nourrir la personnalit\u00e9 de l\u2019Empereur ainsi que les \u00e9volutions de l\u2019arm\u00e9e et \u00e0 travers elles, celles du pays \u00e9galement en le nommant sur la fin du film Mar\u00e9chal de l\u2019Empire. Son sacrifice aurait alors plus de poids.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Par ailleurs, m\u00eame le c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00e9pique \u2013 pourtant r\u00e9ussi techniquement \u2013 reste mitig\u00e9 tant il est balanc\u00e9 par le fatalisme du film visible aussi bien dans son \u00e9talonnage aux couleurs ternes que dans sa conclusion mortif\u00e8re ou le ridicule dans lequel il tourne parfois son personnage. \u00ab Napol\u00e9on \u00bb navigue en fait difficilement entre le biopic historique montant une figure militaire sur un pi\u00e9destal et une satire du personnage entre pi\u00e8tre mari, petit homme et chef sanguinaire. Le film pousse tellement cette dimension critique\/comique qu\u2019il est \u00e0 la fin difficile de la concilier avec le reste du r\u00e9cit tr\u00e8s s\u00e9rieux. Au final, on se retrouve alors avec d\u2019une part une \u00e9pop\u00e9e historique spectaculaire et de l\u2019autre une interpr\u00e9tation int\u00e9ressante mais infructueuse de la figure napol\u00e9onienne.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Le film de Ridley Scott a donc le m\u00e9rite d\u2019oser partir aux antipodes de l\u2019hagiographie mais reste totalement d\u00e9pourvu d\u2019approche politique et s\u2019av\u00e8re finalement moins impressionnant que sa mise en sc\u00e8ne pourrait le sugg\u00e9rer. Dans l\u2019ensemble, il manque de fond et de saveur.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">We can&rsquo;t help but wonder (and fantasize over) what the great Stanley Kubrick would have come up with for such a biopic on one of France&rsquo;s most famous military figures, with his massive project that unfortunately never saw the light of day. But it&rsquo;s Ridley Scott who&rsquo;s releasing a film about Napoleon this year, subject to much criticism, particularly in France.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">The English director had previously made a number of excellent historical epics, from \u201cKingdom of Heaven\u201d to \u201cThe Last Duel\u201d as well as \u201cGladiator\u201d, in which Joaquin Phoenix (Joker; Her) already played Commodus. The Oscar-winning actor is back at the helm of an Empire, alongside Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman; The Son; Mission Impossible), in what feels more like a historical interpretation than a truthful biopic of Bonaparte. Ridley Scott chooses to tell the story of Napoleon&rsquo;s life through the eyes of his relationship with Josephine. \u00ab\u00a0Without her, he&rsquo;s nothing\u00a0\u00bb: hence the big love-driven successes, the costly successes in divorce, and the defeat once alone. He is thus more interested in their flawed relationship than in his political legacy, and more interested in the tormented lover than in the myth. He shows a human Napoleon, fragile and ludicrous.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">His movie obviously takes on an epic scale, and stands out as a great spectacle, with impressive battle scenes (particularly Austerlitz) whose wide shots (more of which would have been nice) bring us into the immensity of imperial warfare at the time, involving hundreds of thousands of infantrymen. He takes full benefit of Apple Studios&rsquo; gigantic budget (close to $200M) to bring us a multitude and variety of costumes, land, sea and cavalry battles, stunning sets and an army of extras over 10,000 strong. Technically, it&rsquo;s a masterpiece, but narratively, much less so.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Although we do witness the Empire&rsquo;s first divorce, the film doesn&rsquo;t dwell on the underlying implications, and never mentions the political reforms of the time, which did have something to do with Napoleon&rsquo;s story. So be it. But all the political characters who appear in the film, including Tahar Rahim and Ben Miles, are given only a few scenes, without any real bearing on the story of the leading figure. In other words, there are no supporting characters, as they are all relegated to the role of extras. What&rsquo;s more, the transition from scenes of sweeping historical change to epic battles and then to marital scenes lacks time and connection. Admittedly, this is an issue that can be addressed in the 4-hour version soon to be available on Apple TV+, but the theatrical release does suffer from it.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Insofar as \u201cNapoleon\u201d, from its very first scene, is far from aiming towards a \u00ab\u00a0100% historical realism\u00a0\u00bb, and refers instead to famous paintings (such as the 1804 coronation or the Battle of the Pyramids, although it leaves out the famous Goya), it might have been better not to use the protagonist&rsquo;s name as a title, as this suggests a more faithful narrative. \u00ab\u00a0Captain Bicorne\u00a0\u00bb or something, could then have been a good historical re-envisioning of the Napoleon character. Why not then, take it a step further and create more developed relationships between the characters, such as for example with his second-in-command. Had this character been the same throughout the whole film, it could have created an interesting relationship, nurtured the emperor\u2019s personality and the evolution of the army, and through this, that of the country as well, by appointing him Marshal of the Empire at the end of the film. His sacrifice would then have a greater impact.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Besides, even the epic quality of the film \u2013 technically successful as it is \u2013 remains mixed, so much so that it is offset by the film&rsquo;s fatalistic approach, reflected in its dull color scheme, its deadly conclusion and the ridiculousness with which it sometimes portrays its character. In fact, \u201cNapoleon\u201d treads a fine line between a historical biopic putting a military figure at the top of his game and a satire of the character as a poor husband, a little man and a bloodthirsty leader. The film takes this critical\/comic dimension so far that, ultimately, it&rsquo;s hard to reconcile it with the rest of the very serious story. In the end, we&rsquo;re left with a spectacular historical epic on one hand, and an interesting but failed exploration of the figure of Napoleon on the other.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">Ridley Scott&rsquo;s movie does dare to go against conventional eulogy, but remains totally devoid of any political perspective, and is ultimately less impressive than its direction might suggest. Overall, it lacks substance and flavor.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Rapha\u00ebl
