pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 la Mostra de Venise, Wes Anderson sortait le mois dernier sur Netflix son deuxi\u00e8me projet de l\u2019ann\u00e9e : quatre adaptations d\u2019un recueil de nouvelles \u00e9crites par Roald Dahl et publi\u00e9 en 1977. Il en tire un moyen-m\u00e9trage (40\u2019) et trois courts-m\u00e9trages (15\u2019), \u00ab La merveilleuse histoire de Henry Sugar \u00bb, \u00ab Venin \u00bb, \u00ab Le Preneur de rats \u00bb, et \u00ab Le Cygne \u00bb, o\u00f9 les m\u00eames acteurs se retrouvent dans diff\u00e9rents r\u00f4les avec Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, Richard Ayoade, et Ralph Fiennes notamment dans le r\u00f4le de Roald Dahl lui-m\u00eame. C\u2019est d\u2019ailleurs la deuxi\u00e8me fois que le r\u00e9alisateur texan adapte une \u0153uvre du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre romancier britannique apr\u00e8s \u00ab Fantastic Mr. Fox \u00bb (2009).<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"9svvp-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9svvp-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9svvp-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"7bi9u-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"7bi9u-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7bi9u-0-0\">Comme dans son long-m\u00e9trage \u00ab Asteroid City \u00bb sorti cet \u00e9t\u00e9, il est une nouvelle fois question d\u2019artificialit\u00e9 avec une mise en sc\u00e8ne qui joue clairement sur l\u2019art de l\u2019illusion \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image de la bo\u00eete l\u00e9vitant les acteurs \u2013 dans un styl\u00e9 tr\u00e8s th\u00e9\u00e2tral avec des d\u00e9cors mobiles, des transitions actionn\u00e9es en direct par un machiniste se m\u00ealant \u00e0 la narration, des acteurs jouant plusieurs r\u00f4les chacun, ou encore une absence totale d\u2019artifice visuel. C\u2019est pourtant le propre du cin\u00e9ma de rendre visuellement cr\u00e9dible son r\u00e9cit, de le mettre en images, et de ne pas sortir son public de la narration. Fid\u00e8le \u00e0 son style tr\u00e8s plastique, Wes Anderson choisit ici de prendre totalement le contrepied de nos attentes cin\u00e9matographiques avec une narration tr\u00e8s litt\u00e9raire et une forme tr\u00e8s artificielle.<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"64c0v-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"64c0v-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"64c0v-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"22f6o-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"22f6o-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"22f6o-0-0\">Il laisse ainsi ses acteurs pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran \u00e9num\u00e9rer les faits \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un narrateur tout en les laissant jouer leur personnage avec un point de vue interne. Il m\u00eale donc habilement les dialogues des personnages dans l\u2019intrigue et les monologues des narrateurs dans le r\u00e9cit, rendant alors ce m\u00e9dium habituellement tr\u00e8s visuel, ici tr\u00e8s oral, aux antipodes de la coutume qui est de dire pour le VIIe art \u201cshow don\u2019t tell\u201d. Il n\u2019utilise, de plus, aucun artifice autre que des costumes ou des perruques \u2013 m\u00eame dans une nouvelle \u00e9voquant une infestation de rats, il n\u2019y en a pas \u2013 toute l\u2019action y est racont\u00e9e par le narrateur, ne laissant plus que les dialogues et le jeu des acteurs \u00e0 la sc\u00e8ne pour exister. A l\u2019exception de quelques jeux de d\u00e9cors qui agissent telles des didascalies de notre lecture visuelle, cela demande donc de tout imaginer. Wes Anderson nous plonge ainsi litt\u00e9ralement dans une adaptation de ces nouvelles, et comme dans un livre, il laisse l\u2019imagination du spectateur faire effet.<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"p8cu-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"p8cu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"p8cu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"1ldv6-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1ldv6-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1ldv6-0-0\">Cette forme atypique laisse donc beaucoup de places \u00e0 ses acteurs, pour qui ce n\u2019est autre qu\u2019une belle opportunit\u00e9 de faire preuve de leur palette de jeu dans des styles bien diff\u00e9rents. Alors bien s\u00fbr, ce recueil est avant tout un exercice de style inventif, un v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9fi technique, et comme dans tout recueil certains courts-m\u00e9trages vont plus plaire que d\u2019autres. It features a feature (40&prime;) and three shorts (15&prime;), \u201cThe Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar\u201d, \u201cPoison\u201d, \u201cThe Rat Catcher\u201d and \u201cThe Swan\u201d, in which the same actors appear in different roles, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, Richard Ayoade and Ralph Fiennes in the role (among others) of Roald Dahl himself. This is the second time the Texan director has adapted a book written by the famous British novelist, after \u201cFantastic Mr. Fox\u201d in 2009.<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"9251c-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9251c-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9251c-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"4uhpn-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4uhpn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4uhpn-0-0\">As in his feature film \u201cAsteroid City\u201d, released this summer, once again the focus is on artificiality, with a mise-en-sc\u00e8ne that clearly plays on the art of illusion \u2013 illustrated by the box levitating the actors \u2013 in a very theatrical style, with moving sets, live transitions operated by a stagehand interfering with the narrative, actors playing several roles each, and a total absence of visual trickery. Yet it&rsquo;s the very essence of cinema to make a story visually convincing, to capture it in pictures, and to keep the audience engaged with the narrative. True to his highly plastic style, Wes Anderson chooses here to go completely against our cinematic expectations, with a very literary narrative and a highly artificial style.<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"8v1jm-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8v1jm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8v1jm-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"4ib4b-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4ib4b-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4ib4b-0-0\">He lets his actors on screen recite the facts like a narrator, while at the same time letting them play their characters from an internal point of view. He skillfully blends the characters&rsquo; dialogues of the plot and the narrators&rsquo; monologues of the story, making this usually very visual medium, here very vocal, the antithesis of the traditional \u00ab\u00a0show don&rsquo;t tell\u00a0\u00bb approach to the seventh art. What&rsquo;s more, he uses no artifice other than costumes or wigs \u2013 even in a short story about a rat infestation, none are used \u2013 all the action is narrated by the narrator, leaving only the dialogue and acting for the scene to exist. With the exception of a few set pieces that act as didascalies for our visual reading, this requires us to picture everything. Wes Anderson thus literally takes us into an adaptation of these short stories, and as in a book, he lets the viewer&rsquo;s imagination take over.<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"9n1uq-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9n1uq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9n1uq-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"b31rf\" data-offset-key=\"10vor-0-0\"><div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"10vor-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"10vor-0-0\">This unconventional approach leaves plenty of room for the actors, for whom it&rsquo;s a great opportunity to showcase their range of acting skills in a variety of roles. Of course, this collection is first and foremost an exercise in inventive style, a genuine technical challenge, and as with any collection, some shorts are more appealing than others. But overall, with this literary style transposed to the screen, Wes Anderson manages to create tension and deliver an interesting plot, particularly in the longer one, which he opens and closes with a mise en abyme as in his two previous features; plus the short format lends itself well to this highly emphasized style.<\/span><\/div><div data-offset-key=\"10vor-0-0\">\u00a0<\/div><div
