Le cin\u00e9aste mexicain adoub\u00e9 par Hollywood (Birdman ; The Revenant ; 21 Grammes) s\u2019associe ici \u00e0 Tom Cruise pour ce qui est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 comme une satire politique s\u2019attaquant au bouleversement climatique et l\u2019immobilit\u00e9 des puissants. Ce dernier casse \u00e0 nouveau son image de h\u00e9ros apr\u00e8s deux d\u00e9cennies de films d\u2019action pour incarner un magnat du p\u00e9trole vil et grotesque avec accent on ne peut plus sudiste et bedaine \u00e0 peine contenue. Le ton est tr\u00e8s clairement absurde dans un rythme soutenu o\u00f9 \u00e7a parle vite et beaucoup et (dans) un style volontiers extravagant, exag\u00e9r\u00e9 et outrancier \u00e0 l\u2019image du titre dont le suffixe comparatif souligne cette volont\u00e9 de \u00ab toujours plus \u00bb : creuser et creuser jusqu\u2019\u00e0 notre propre tombe. Un titre qui se r\u00e9f\u00e8re au surnom du protagoniste puisque si la catastrophe p\u00e9troli\u00e8re, qui sert de catalyseur \u00e0 l\u2019intrigue, se d\u00e9roule en Arctique, ce n\u2019est pas pour rien : Mr. Rockwell aurait ainsi d\u00e9j\u00e0 creus\u00e9 partout ailleurs, ne laissant plus que les p\u00f4les \u00e0 exploiter et ruiner. Et c\u2019est un personnage qui ne sort litt\u00e9ralement jamais \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, il est toujours dans des pi\u00e8ces \u2013 et surtout chez lui, au point que le Pr\u00e9sident vienne \u00e0 lui et non l\u2019inverse \u2013 pourtant constamment entour\u00e9 de fresques repr\u00e9sentant la nature alors qu\u2019il symbolise justement la destruction de celle-ci.<\/p><p>Mais s\u2019il y a bien du \u00ab\u00a0Docteur Folamour\u00a0\u00bb ou du \u00ab\u00a0Don\u2019t Look Up\u00a0\u00bb dans \u00ab\u00a0Digger\u00a0\u00bb, ce n\u2019est que la porte d\u2019entr\u00e9e d\u2019un film qui r\u00e9serve plusieurs surprises dont nous ne g\u00e2cherons pas le plaisir \u2013 d\u2019autant que pour une fois, le marketing d\u2019un film d\u2019une telle ampleur le m\u00e9nage \u00e9galement. La satire n\u2019est en effet ici que la pointe de l\u2019iceberg \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive, qu\u2019incarne ce film moins comique et divertissant qu\u2019il n\u2019y para\u00eet, mais finalement plus intelligent et original. Car si la satire a du pain sur la planche ces derniers temps, tant il faut forcer le trait pour tenter de d\u00e9passer les outrances de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, l\u2019ironie fictive peut ne devenir alors qu\u2019un simple reflet (grin\u00e7ant) de l\u2019actualit\u00e9 au risque d\u2019enfoncer des portes ouvertes. \u00ab\u00a0Digger\u00a0\u00bb peut alors creuser plus profond\u00e9ment son sujet ou bifurquer. Et en choisissant cette seconde option, qui divisera certainement de par la rupture de l\u2019immersion qu\u2019elle provoque chez le spectateur, le film offre une tangente qui s\u2019av\u00e8re int\u00e9ressante, intrigante et surprenante. Celle-ci lui fait ind\u00e9niablement perdre en humour et en comique, mais ajoute une nouvelle dimension qui apporte non seulement une justification et une compr\u00e9hension au surjeu de toute la distribution ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019artificialit\u00e9 des d\u00e9cors, mais embarque \u00e9galement ce r\u00e9cit dans une certaine exp\u00e9rience th\u00e9\u00e2trale.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30837 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snapshot_6798.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snapshot_6798.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snapshot_6798-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snapshot_6798-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Snapshot_6798-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Si cette bascule cr\u00e9e une distance, elle \u00e9largit \u00e9galement l\u2019univers de cette fiction avant d\u2019ajouter une nouvelle r\u00e9v\u00e9lation qui transforme finalement la nature m\u00eame du film. Apr\u00e8s nous avoir propos\u00e9 une introduction satirique sur l\u2019\u00e9tat du monde actuel et de sa sur-exploitation, \u00ab Digger \u00bb bascule ainsi dans la construction-m\u00eame d\u2019une satire avant de re-basculer vers son int\u00e9r\u00eat et sa port\u00e9e par le biais du personnage de Jesse Plemons. Le film s\u2019ouvre donc sur une satire du pr\u00e9sent pour se cl\u00f4turer sur une satire de ce qui s\u2019est pass\u00e9, ou pour le dire autrement sur une satire d\u2019anticipation. Cette dimension transforme alors l\u2019apocalypse en reconstitution du d\u00e9sastre, comme une mani\u00e8re de rendre le futur d\u00e9j\u00e0 pass\u00e9. Ainsi, si l\u2019on ne peut plus faire de satire du pr\u00e9sent, autant faire une satire de l\u2019apr\u00e8s. L\u2019objectif de l\u2019intrigue devient alors de faire rire sur les ruines du pass\u00e9 qui a amen\u00e9 le pr\u00e9sent apocalyptique du film, car il faut bien ramener un peu de rire dans ce monde (futuriste) de d\u00e9solation \u2013 sous-entendu que nous spectateurs, sommes en train de vivre ou vers lequel nous nous dirigeons irr\u00e9m\u00e9diablement. Et la force du film r\u00e9side dans le fait de questionner pourquoi il est ainsi, car d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but quelque chose semble clocher. Cela vaut aussi bien pour les d\u00e9cors en huis-clos, que pour la distribution royale compos\u00e9e de nombreux acteurs r\u00e9currents d\u2019Hollywood dans des r\u00f4les secondaires qui nous donne une impression \u00e0 nous spectateurs de les conna\u00eetre, comme si dans ce futur on reconnaissait ces figures historiques (ou du moins leurs caricatures). N\u00e9anmoins, la fin tra\u00eenant quelque peu en longueur, le film aurait probablement gagn\u00e9 \u00e0 conclure sur cette r\u00e9v\u00e9lation interrogatrice plut\u00f4t que sur une fin visuellement plus explicite.<\/p><p>Un film qui demande \u00e0 \u00eatre dig\u00e9r\u00e9, \u00ab\u00a0Digger\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019impose comme une \u0153uvre qui \u2013 autant dans son propos que dans son contexte \u2013 aspire plus \u00e0 la post\u00e9rit\u00e9 qu\u2019\u00e0 un succ\u00e8s imm\u00e9diat tant il rentrera dans les annales des r\u00e9cents naufrages au box-office. Il faut dire qu\u2019il s\u2019inscrit v\u00e9ritablement dans cette veine d\u2019anti-blockbusters ou de blockbusters d\u2019auteurs que <em>Warner<\/em> a cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 financer derni\u00e8rement en misant sur un succ\u00e8s avant tout critique et cin\u00e9philique plus que financier, et sur un \u00e9quilibre annuel du studio maintenu par la r\u00e9ussite d\u2019autres gros projets plus grand public. Ce fut notamment le cas l\u2019an dernier de \u00ab\u00a0Une Bataille Apr\u00e8s L\u2019Autre\u00a0\u00bb qui avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 loin d\u2019\u00eatre rentable mais avait eu un grand succ\u00e8s critique, du public et des Oscars et donc un gain de prestige plus que de dollars. The Mexican filmmaker, who has been embraced by Hollywood (Birdman; The Revenant; 21 Grams) teams up here with Tom Cruise for what is presented as a political satire tackling climate change and the inaction of those in power. Cruise once again shatters his hero image after two decades of action movies to portray a vile and grotesque oil tycoon with a distinctly Southern accent and a barely contained belly. The tone is unmistakably absurd, with a brisk pace where characters speak quickly and profusely, and a style that\u2019s deliberately extravagant, over-the-top and outrageous \u2013 much like the title, whose comparative suffix underscores this drive for \u201cmore and more\u201d: digging and digging until we reach our own graves. A title that refers to the protagonist\u2019s nickname, since the oil spill \u2013which serves as the catalyst for the plot \u2013 takes place in the Arctic for a reason: Mr. Rockwell has apparently already dug everywhere else, leaving only the polar regions to extract and ruin. And he is a character who literally never goes outside; he is always indoors \u2013 and especially at home, to the point that the President comes to him rather than the other way around \u2013 yet he is constantly surrounded by murals depicting nature, while he himself symbolizes its very destruction.<\/p><p>But while there are certainly echoes of \u201cDr. Strangelove\u201d or \u201cDon\u2019t Look Up\u201d in \u201cDigger\u201d, this is merely the gateway to a film that holds several surprises \u2013 and we won\u2019t spoil the fun, especially since, for once, the marketing campaign for a film of this magnitude is also keeping them under wraps. Satire is, in fact, merely the tip of the drifting iceberg embodied by this film \u2013 which is less comical and entertaining than it seems, but ultimately smarter and more original. For while satire may have had its work cut out lately, given how much exaggeration is needed to try to surpass the excesses of reality, fictional irony can then become nothing more than a simple (bitter) reflection of current events, at the risk of stating the obvious. \u201cDigger\u201d can therefore either delve deeper into its subject or take a different turn. And by choosing the latter \u2013 a decision that will certainly divide audiences due to the disruption of the viewer\u2019s immersion it causes \u2013 the film offers a tangent that proves interesting, intriguing, and surprising. This undeniably makes it lose some of its humor and comic effect, but adds a new dimension that not only provides justification and understanding for the over-the-top performances of the entire cast as well as for the artificiality of the sets, but also transforms this narrative into a kind of theatrical experience.<\/p><p>While this shift creates a sense of distance, it also expands the scope of this fictional world before introducing another revelation that ultimately transforms the very nature of the film. After offering us a satirical introduction to the state of the modern world and its overexploitation, \u201cDigger\u201d thus shifts into the very construction of a satire before shifting again to its relevance and scope through the character of Jesse Plemons. The film thus opens with a satire of the present and closes with a satire of what has happened \u2013 or, in other words, with a satire of the future. This dimension then transforms the apocalypse into a reenactment of the disaster, as a way of making the future seem like the past. Thus, if we can no longer use satire to address the present, we might as well use it to address the aftermath. The plot\u2019s objective then becomes to make us laugh at the ruins of the past that led to the film\u2019s apocalyptic present, because we need to bring a little laughter back into this (futuristic) world of desolation \u2013 implying that we, the audience, are either already living in or are irrevocably heading toward. And the film\u2019s strength lies in questioning why things are this way, because from the very beginning, something seems off. This applies both to the closed-door settings and to the star-studded cast, featuring numerous recurring Hollywood actors in supporting roles which gives us, the audience, the impression that we know them, as if in this future we were recognizing these historical figures (or at least their caricatures). Nevertheless, since the ending drags on a bit, the film would likely have benefited from wrapping up with this thought-provoking revelation rather than with a more visually explicit conclusion.<\/p><p>\u201cDigger\u201d is a film that takes some time to digest; and it stands out as a work that \u2013 both in its subject matter and its context \u2013 strives more for posterity than for immediate success, as it will surely go down as one of the biggest recent box-office flops. It must be said that it truly fits into the trend of anti-blockbusters (or auteur blockbusters) that <em>Warner<\/em> has sought to finance recently, banking on success primarily with critics and cinephiles rather than financial returns, and relying on the studio\u2019s annual balance being kept afloat by the successes of other major projects aimed at a broader audience. This was notably the case last year with \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d, which had already been far from profitable but had enjoyed great success with critics, audiences, and at the Oscars \u2013 and thus brought in more prestige than dollars. However, not only did \u201cDigger\u201d cost even more and bring in even less, but it has also been far more divisive, and the studio has a slimmer chance this year of balancing its books given its other major projects. Ultimately, as the last film released by <em>Warner<\/em> before its official merger with <em>Paramount<\/em> (a studio that takes far fewer risks and is also in debt), this satire about the end of a
