d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1990, le silence est d\u2019or, comme l\u2019apprendra la jeune In\u00e9s \u00e0 ses d\u00e9pens. Le Chili sort \u00e0 peine de presque deux d\u00e9cennies de dictature, et la transition vers la d\u00e9mocratie et le n\u00e9o-lib\u00e9ralisme ne se fait pas sans compromis, m\u00eame dans les montagnes isol\u00e9es de l\u2019Araucanie. Pour son deuxi\u00e8me long-m\u00e9trage, s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 dans la section cannoise <em>Un certain regard<\/em>, Manuela Martelli nous emporte dans les \u00e9touffantes neiges des hauteurs sud-am\u00e9ricaines.<\/p><p>Ce qui devait \u00eatre un hiver joyeux pour In\u00e9s se transforme en une sombre prise de conscience des d\u00e9fauts de sa soci\u00e9t\u00e9. L\u2019enfant, qui vit dans l\u2019h\u00f4tel et la station de sports d\u2019hiver de ses grands-parents, rencontre pourtant d\u2019abord une adolescente allemande avec qui elle se lie d\u2019amiti\u00e9, trouvant en elle une s\u0153ur qu\u2019elle n\u2019a pas, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que cette skieuse de haut niveau disparaisse myst\u00e9rieusement. In\u00e9s cherche alors \u00e0 la retrouver, mais surtout \u00e0 comprendre.<\/p><p>\u00ab D\u00e9gel \u00bb est une jonction : entre pass\u00e9 et futur, entre innocence et r\u00e9alit\u00e9, entre local et \u00e9tranger. Les lieux o\u00f9 se d\u00e9roulent l\u2019action servent de liant : la neige d\u2019une blancheur pure sert ainsi d\u2019oppressant cache-mis\u00e8re (mis\u00e8re sociale et morale autant qu\u2019\u00e9conomique et politique) dans un monde o\u00f9 tout n\u2019est qu\u2019omert\u00e0. L\u2019ambiance, mise en musique par des tonalit\u00e9s stridentes et inqui\u00e9tantes, est par cons\u00e9quent froide et pesante \u2013 et peut-\u00eatre encore plus lorsque le manteau fond.<\/p><p>N\u00e9anmoins, le film ne serait pas aussi bon sans le jeu prodigieux de Maya O&rsquo;Rourke, jeune actrice bilingue (dans une intrigue par ailleurs trilingue) qui cr\u00e8ve l\u2019\u00e9cran avec son regard d\u2019obsidienne. Chile is just emerging from nearly two decades of dictatorship, and the transition to democracy and neoliberalism is not without its compromises, even in the remote mountains of Araucan\u00eda. For her second feature film, screened at Cannes in the \u201cUn Certain Regard\u201d section, Manuela Martelli takes us into the stifling snows of the South American highlands.<\/p><p>What was supposed to be a joyful winter for In\u00e9s turns into a grim realization of the flaws in her society. The child, who lives at her grandparents\u2019 hotel and ski resort, first meets a German teenager with whom she bonds, finding in her a sister she never had \u2013 until this accomplished skier mysteriously disappears. In\u00e9s then sets out to find her, but above all, to understand.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Meltdown\u201d is a bridge between the past and the future, between innocence and reality, between the local and the foreign. The settings where the action takes place serve as a unifying element: the pure white snow thus acts as an oppressive veil concealing misery \u2013 social and moral as well as economic and political \u2013 in a world where everything is shrouded in silence. The atmosphere, set to music by strident and unsettling tones, is consequently cold and oppressive \u2013 and perhaps even more so when the snow melts.<\/p><p>Nevertheless, the film wouldn\u2019t be nearly as good without the extraordinary performance of Maya O\u2019Rourke, a young bilingual actress (in a plot that is, incidentally, trilingual) who lights up the screen with her obsidian gaze. La ni\u00f1a, que vive en el hotel y la estaci\u00f3n de esqu\u00ed de sus abuelos, conoce al principio a una adolescente alemana con la que entabla amistad, encontrando en ella a la hermana que nunca tuvo, hasta que esta esquiadora de alto nivel desaparece misteriosamente. In\u00e9s intenta entonces encontrarla, pero sobre todo entender lo sucedido.<\/p><p>\u00abEl Deshielo\u00bb es un punto de uni\u00f3n: entre el pasado y el futuro, entre la inocencia y la realidad, entre lo local y lo extranjero.
