Premier long-m\u00e9trage d\u2019Ian Tuason (qui s\u2019est \u00e0 plusieurs reprises distingu\u00e9 pour ses productions sonores et en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 virtuelle), le film s\u2019inspire tr\u00e8s fortement de la propre exp\u00e9rience du r\u00e9alisateur \u2013 de sorte qu\u2019il a m\u00eame \u00e9t\u00e9 int\u00e9gralement tourn\u00e9 dans sa maison parentale.<\/p><p>\u00ab Undertone \u00bb est donc un huis clos o\u00f9 l\u2019on suit l\u2019existence [r]enferm\u00e9e d\u2019Evy, podcasteuse sur le paranormal (vis-\u00e0-vis duquel elle est d\u2019abord plut\u00f4t sceptique, contrairement \u00e0 son acolyte) qui se vit chez sa m\u00e8re en fin de vie, isol\u00e9e. Elle re\u00e7oit un soir un courriel myst\u00e9rieux auquel sont joints dix fichiers audios, et leur \u00e9coute va la faire basculer.<\/p><p>C\u2019est tout un environnement sonore qu\u2019Ian Tuason a cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour ce film, avec des enregistrements volontairement d\u00e9grad\u00e9s, des appels t\u00e9l\u00e9phoniques de qualit\u00e9 al\u00e9atoire et d\u2019autres sons plus banals que peut \u00e9mettre toute maison, mais aussi avec des ruptures et des silences parfois plus assourdissants que le paradoxal vacarme qu\u2019entend, semble entendre ou croit entendre Evy. De cette multiplicit\u00e9 acoustique, renforc\u00e9e d\u2019ailleurs sur le plan spatial avec cette demeure qui semble scind\u00e9e en deux atmosph\u00e8res visuelles, monte ainsi progressivement une angoisse augment\u00e9e par notre imagination, puisqu\u2019il y a des parts d\u2019ombre. C\u2019est typique de ces incontournables <em>creepypastas<\/em> dont s\u2019inspire ouvertement le film \u2013 qui a aussi pour r\u00e9f\u00e9rences assum\u00e9es \u00ab Le Projet Blair Witch \u00bb et \u00ab Paranormal Activity \u00bb.<\/p><p>Avec Evy, l\u2019on passe alors doucement de la sur-rationalisation \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9pouvante, parce que les fichiers qu\u2019elle analyse la nuit font de plus en plus \u00e9cho \u00e0 sa propre vie. La question de la maternit\u00e9 et des peurs qu\u2019elle g\u00e9n\u00e8re (autant sur la perte d\u2019un parent que sur l\u2019attente d\u2019un enfant), entrem\u00eal\u00e9e bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 des \u00e9l\u00e9ments surnaturels, devient ainsi centrale. Ian Tuason\u2019s debut feature film (he has made a name for himself on several occasions with his sound and virtual reality productions) draws heavily on the director\u2019s own experiences \u2013 so much so that it was shot entirely in his parents\u2019 home.<\/p><p>\u201cUndertone\u201d is, therefore, a closed-door drama in which we follow the isolated life of Evy, a podcaster who covers the paranormal (toward which she is initially rather skeptical, unlike her fellow podcaster), who is living with her mother, who is nearing the end of her life, in isolation. One evening, she receives a mysterious email with ten audio files attached, and listening to them will turn her world upside down.<\/p><p>Ian Tuason has created an entire soundscape for this film, featuring deliberately degraded recordings, phone calls of varying quality, and other more mundane sounds that any home might make, but also featuring breaks and silences that are at times more deafening than the paradoxical noise that Evy hears, seems to hear, or thinks she hears. From this acoustic multi-layered effect \u2013 further reinforced spatially by the house, which seems split into two distinct visual realms \u2013 a sense of anxiety gradually builds, amplified by our imagination, as there are areas left in the shadows. This is typical of those classic creepypastas that the film openly draws inspiration from \u2013 as well as \u201cThe Blair Witch Project\u201d and \u201cParanormal Activity\u201d.<\/p><p>With Evy, we gradually shift from over-rationalization to terror, because the files she analyzes at night increasingly mirror her own life. The theme of motherhood and the fears it inspires (regarding both the loss of a parent and the anticipation of a child), intertwined, of course, with supernatural elements, thus takes center stage. The heroine logically descends into a form of madness, and the final sequence \u2013 which proves to be very intense \u2013 leads to a particularly muddled yet original conclusion \u2013 which is precisely what the film\u2019s concept is all about.<\/p><p>Axel
