Renate Reinsve avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 jou\u00e9 ensemble deux ans plus t\u00f4t dans un petit film ind\u00e9pendant am\u00e9ricain tellement pass\u00e9 inaper\u00e7u en France qu\u2019il n\u2019a pas eu droit \u00e0 une sortie en salles (et est d\u00e9sormais disponible sur\u00a0<em>Netflix<\/em>).<\/p><p>Aaron Schimberg signe ici une troublante fable sur l\u2019apparence physique aupr\u00e8s d\u2019un homme au visage difforme qui essaie de travailler si possible comme com\u00e9dien (jou\u00e9 par un Sebastian Stan \u00e0 la fois sympathique et d\u00e9rangeant qui continue d\u2019opter pour des r\u00f4les surprenants pour un <em>Avenger<\/em> apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Fresh\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0The Apprentice\u00a0\u00bb), de sa voisine (Renate Reinsve dans son premier r\u00f4le anglophone) dramaturge, et d\u2019un autre d\u00e9figur\u00e9 au comportement radicalement oppos\u00e9 (jou\u00e9 par Adam Pearson, lui-m\u00eame atteint de neurofibromatose). Lorsqu\u2019un rem\u00e8de m\u00e9dical semble pouvoir lui donner la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019effacer ses difformations, sa vie se voit boulevers\u00e9e de nouveaux questionnements \u2026<\/p><p>Tourn\u00e9 sur pellicule dans un bel \u00e9clairage urbain, \u00ab\u00a0A Different Man\u00a0\u00bb a surtout \u00e9t\u00e9 applaudi pour son impressionnant travail technique de maquillage et de proth\u00e8ses qui participent au vrai travail de d\u00e9figuration d\u2019une mise en sc\u00e8ne dont les choix de cadre montrent parfois beaucoup, parfois moins, dans une volont\u00e9 d\u2019habituer le spectateur \u00e0 ce personnage pour ne pas ou progressivement ne plus le d\u00e9visager. Le travail corporel de Sebastian Stan est en cela \u00e9galement remarquable, et en particulier ce qu\u2019il change de sa posture ou non, une fois que son apparence \u00e9volue, r\u00e9v\u00e9lant au fond sa nature de g\u00eane. Mais le r\u00e9alisateur, lui-m\u00eame atteint de malformation avant d\u2019\u00eatre op\u00e9r\u00e9, va plus loin dans cette version socialo-psychologique de \u00ab\u00a0La Belle et la B\u00eate\u00a0\u00bb. Dans des variations de tons qui voient ce trio devenir tout \u00e0 tour de moins en moins sympathique malgr\u00e9 leurs intentions louables, l\u2019\u00e9volution de leurs dynamiques fait \u00e9cho aux \u00e9volutions corporelles. La diff\u00e9rence physique cr\u00e9e a priori automatiquement une diff\u00e9rence sociale aboutissant \u00e0 un besoin de se sentir \u2018normal\u2019 alors m\u00eame qu\u2019aussi diff\u00e9rents que nous pouvons \u00eatre, d\u2019autres peuvent aller tout aussi mal.<\/p><p>La diff\u00e9rence ne serait alors qu\u2019un ressenti\u00a0? En somme, l\u2019on d\u00e9sire toujours ce que l\u2019on n\u2019est pas. La transformation du monstre \u00e0 l\u2019humain ne devient alors pas une m\u00e9taphore, un changement d\u2019\u00e9tat d\u2019esprit plus qu\u2019autre chose\u00a0? Car au final notre apparence est-elle notre identit\u00e9\u00a0? En partie certainement, mais pas int\u00e9gralement. Si l\u2019on esp\u00e8re changer une fois diff\u00e9rent, le probl\u00e8me n\u2019est-il alors pas plut\u00f4t la direction que nous prenons \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle\u00a0? Pire, au fond, n\u2019appr\u00e9cie-t-on pas la diff\u00e9rence lorsqu\u2019elle nous permet de nous distinguer des autres\u00a0? Que pr\u00e9f\u00e8re-t-on alors\u00a0? Et quel prix sommes-nous pr\u00eats \u00e0 payer pour ne pas n\u2019\u00eatre qu\u2019un anonyme dans la masse\u00a0?<\/p><p>Il y a donc aussi une question d\u2019attention et un besoin social derri\u00e8re. Et \u00ab\u00a0A Different Man\u00a0\u00bb a la bonne id\u00e9e d\u2019interroger son propre processus de cr\u00e9ation sc\u00e9naristique en remettant en question le processus dramaturgique des personnages. Il interroge ainsi tout autant notre rapport \u00e0 la reconnaissance et \u00e0 la notori\u00e9t\u00e9, que la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration des histoires d\u2019autrui et de la souffrance par l\u2019industrie culturelle. Est-ce mal de choisir quelqu\u2019un dans un r\u00f4le justement pour exploiter sa difformit\u00e9\u00a0? Le film explore ainsi le besoin de changer, le besoin d\u2019\u00eatre diff\u00e9rent, et d\u2019\u00eatre un autre, \u00e0 la fois sous l\u2019angle social de l\u2019image que l\u2019on transmet et de ce que la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 nous renvoie, mais aussi sous l\u2019angle artistique du com\u00e9dien et du choix des r\u00f4les.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Aaron Schimberg delivers an unsettling fable about physical appearance, centered on a man with a disfigured face who tries, if possible, to work as an actor (played by a Sebastian Stan who is both likable and disturbing, and who continues to take on surprising roles for an <em>Avenger<\/em> following \u201cFresh\u201d and \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d), his playwright neighbor (Renate Reinsve in her first English-language role), and another disfigured man with a radically different demeanor (played by Adam Pearson, who himself has neurofibromatosis). When a medical treatment seems to offer him the chance to erase his disfigurements, his life is turned upside down by new uncertainties.<\/p><p>Shot on film against a beautifully lit urban backdrop, \u201cA Different Man\u201d was particularly praised for its impressive technical work in makeup and prosthetics, which contribute to the true disfiguring effect of a film whose framing choices sometimes reveal a lot, sometimes less, in an effort to acclimate the viewer to this character so we don\u2019t \u2013 or gradually stop \u2013 staring at him. Sebastian Stan\u2019s physical performance is also remarkable in this regard, particularly in how he does or does not adjust his posture once his appearance changes, ultimately revealing his underlying sense of unease. But ultimately, it is through its many social questions that this film truly stands out.<\/p><p>Physical appearance certainly raises all sorts of questions for everyone. But the director \u2013 who himself had a physical deformity before undergoing surgery \u2013 takes this socio-psychological take on \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d a step further. As the tone shifts and this trio becomes increasingly less likable despite their good intentions, the evolution of their dynamics mirrors physical changes. Ultimately, we always desire what we are not. Doesn\u2019t the monster\u2019s transformation into a human then become a metaphor \u2013 a change of mindset more than anything else? After all, does our appearance define our identity? Partly, certainly, but not entirely. If we hope to change once we\u2019re different, isn\u2019t the problem rather the direction we\u2019re currently heading in? Worse still, deep down, don\u2019t we appreciate difference when it allows us to stand out from others? What do we want more, then? And what price are we willing to pay to avoid being just another anonymous face in the crowd?<\/p><p>So, there\u2019s also an issue of attention and a social need behind it.
