Encore moins ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tourn\u00e9s dans le pays. Et m\u00eame si celui-ci est r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par une Soudanaise avec des Soudanais, il n\u2019\u00e9chappe pas \u00e0 la r\u00e8gle, rattrap\u00e9e par la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 s\u00e9curitaire de son pays. Initialement pr\u00e9vu dans la r\u00e9gion de Gezira, le tournage a d\u00fb \u00eatre d\u00e9plac\u00e9 en Egypte suite \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9clatement de la guerre civile en 2023 pour y recr\u00e9er l\u2019ambiance des villages soudanais. Si ce travail de d\u00e9cors est \u00e0 souligner pour sa qualit\u00e9 d\u2019immersion, il illustre aussi les difficult\u00e9s inh\u00e9rentes au cin\u00e9ma local qui fait de ce film une rare fen\u00eatre sur un monde en grande partie oubli\u00e9 du septi\u00e8me art.<\/p><p>Premier long-m\u00e9trage de Suzannah Mirghani, et premier film d\u2019une femme soudanaise qui plus est, \u00ab\u00a0Cotton Queen\u00a0\u00bb arrive jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nos salles europ\u00e9ennes gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une coproduction internationale qui fait de ce film arabophone un objet rare dans nos salles obscures. Si son cadre narratif l\u2019est moins avec un sch\u00e9ma l\u00e9g\u00e8rement pr\u00e9con\u00e7u, il offre n\u00e9anmoins entre m\u00e9moire de la d\u00e9colonisation et r\u00e9cit d\u2019\u00e9mancipation, un beau portrait de femmes en lutte entre d\u00e9licatesse et brutalit\u00e9. Bien loin des pr\u00e9occupations politiques qui mettent actuellement le Soudan sur la carte au gr\u00e9 de ses r\u00e9volutions et ind\u00e9pendances, ce film se concentre sur la profonde relation avec leur terre et leur coton qu\u2019on les villageois, ainsi que les diff\u00e9rents r\u00f4les que les femmes peuvent repr\u00e9senter dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p><p>Il met en sc\u00e8ne une jeune g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de cueilleuses de coton, la premi\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ration \u00e0 n\u2019avoir rien connu de la colonisation ou de la d\u00e9colonisation et donc pour qui ces r\u00e9cits de dominations anglaises sont de l\u2019ordre du mythe historique, contrairement \u00e0 Al Sit, la matriarche du village qui a d\u00fb se battre \u00e0 son \u00e9poque pour survivre et r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la violence du colonialisme. Parmi cette bande de jeunes filles qui passent leurs journ\u00e9es \u00e0 cueillir par milliers ces fleurs blanches et duveteuses avant de se r\u00e9server quelques moments repos et de baignade dans la rivi\u00e8re locale, l\u2019existence paisible de Nafisa qui aime \u00e9couter les r\u00e9cits du pass\u00e9 (en tentant de reconstituer leur chronologie), va se voir boulevers\u00e9e par l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019un homme d\u2019affaire soudanais venu transformer le coton naturel et pur de la r\u00e9gion en produit g\u00e9n\u00e9tiquement modifi\u00e9 pour r\u00e9sister aux maladies et ainsi augmenter la productivit\u00e9. Notre jeune protagoniste (dont le nom signifie \u2018pr\u00e9cieux\u2019) va alors devoir trouver son propre chemin vers l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance face \u00e0 cette nouvelle forme de domination pr\u00e9datrice.<\/p><p>Entrela\u00e7ant les questions d\u2019h\u00e9ritage colonial, de capitalisme ravageur et d\u2019\u00e9mancipation f\u00e9minine, \u00ab\u00a0Cotton Queen\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019impose comme un film de rivi\u00e8re, un film qui prend le temps de voguer entre ses sujets dans un r\u00e9cit empreint d\u2019un r\u00e9alisme qui touche au merveilleux (\u00e0 travers les apparitions d\u2019un cupidon aux ailes noires ou \u00e0 travers la peur pr\u00e9monitoire d\u2019une maison hant\u00e9e). Even fewer have been shot in the country. And even though this one was directed by a Sudanese woman with a Sudanese cast, it is no exception to the rule, hampered by the reality of the security situation in the country. Originally planned to be shot in the Gezira region, filming had to be moved to Egypt following the outbreak of the civil war in 2023 in order to recreate the atmosphere of Sudanese villages there. While this set design deserves praise for its immersive quality, it also illustrates the inherent challenges facing locally produced cinema, making this film a rare window into a world largely overlooked by the film industry.<\/p><p>\u201cCotton Queen\u201d is Suzannah Mirghani\u2019s debut feature film \u2013 and, incidentally, the first film directed by a Sudanese woman \u2013 and is making its way to European theaters thanks to an international co-production that makes this Arabic-language film a rare viewing experience in our cinemas. While its narrative framework is less original \u2013 with a slightly formulaic structure \u2013 it nonetheless offers, between reflections on decolonization and a story of emancipation, a beautiful portrait of women caught between delicacy and brutality. Far removed from the political concerns that are currently putting Sudan in the spotlight amid its revolutions and struggles for independence, this film focuses on the deep connection the villagers have with their land and their cotton, as well as the various roles women play in their society.<\/p><p>It features a young generation of cotton pickers, the first generation to have known nothing of colonization or decolonization and for whom, therefore, these tales of British domination are little more than historical myth \u2013 unlike Al Sit, the village matriarch, who had to fight in her day to survive and withstand the violence of colonialism. Among this group of young women who spend their days picking thousands of these white, fluffy flowers before taking a few moments to rest and bathe in the local river, Nafisa\u2019s peaceful existence \u2013 as she loves to listen to stories of the past (while trying to piece together their timeline) \u2013 will be turned upside down by the arrival of a Sudanese businessman who has come to transform the region\u2019s natural, pure cotton into a genetically modified product designed to be resistant to disease and thus increase productivity. Our young protagonist (whose name means \u201cprecious\u201d) will then have to find her own path to independence as she faces this new form of abusive domination.<\/p><p>Weaving together themes of colonial legacy, destructive capitalism, and women\u2019s empowerment, \u201cCotton Queen\u201d stands out as a \u2018river film\u2019, a film that takes its time drifting between its themes in a narrative imbued with a realism that borders on the fantastical (through the appearances of a black-winged Cupid or the foreshadowing fear of a haunted house). This is a modern fable that also addresses the weight of traditions, the memory of female mutilation, and the persistence of forced marriages in a coming-of-age story whose beautiful cinematography beautifully captures the faces of these women, foremost among them the heroine, delicately portrayed by Mihad Murtada.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
