Si ce style peut para\u00eetre d\u00e9routant il refl\u00e8te cependant plut\u00f4t bien son propos, qui n\u2019est autre que le quotidien de la banalit\u00e9 du mal.<\/p><p>A partir de l\u00e0, choisir de repr\u00e9senter les p\u00e9r\u00e9grinations de son protagoniste \u2013 dont la lutte pour la reconnaissance et l\u2019ambition sociale s\u2019inscrit dans le quotidien des ann\u00e9es 1940, dans une France o\u00f9 la survie sociale passait souvent par l\u2019indiff\u00e9rence face au reste du monde \u2013 par un style volontairement banal (jusque dans des \u00e9clairages nocturnes o\u00f9 l\u2019on ressent l\u2019artificialit\u00e9), donne clairement une forme de coh\u00e9rence entre le r\u00e9cit et sa mise en image. De plus ce dispositif cr\u00e9e une forme d\u2019instantan\u00e9it\u00e9 du r\u00e9cit (comme si l\u2019on suivait les choses au moment o\u00f9 elles arrivent [une forme de <em>vlog<\/em> historique\u00a0?], autrement dit, comme si l\u2019histoire s\u2019\u00e9crivait un peu en direct). Cela peut ainsi cr\u00e9er comme une r\u00e9sonance entre ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements \u2018historiques\u2019 et notre propre \u2018pr\u00e9sent\u2019, ce qui est amplifi\u00e9 par des choix de dialogues et de jeu d\u2019acteurs qui peuvent para\u00eetre tr\u00e8s contemporain (tout en conservant une voix off de correspondance \u00e9pistolaire qui, elle, est r\u00e9ellement d\u2019\u00e9poque), auxquels s\u2019ajoutent des choix de musiques anachroniques. Pour nous plonger dans son quotidien, son film n\u2019expose ainsi pas d\u2019enjeux tout au long de ses 2h30 (au risque de pouvoir peser sur le spectateur) pour illustrer la succession de choix, de d\u00e9cisions et d\u2019imp\u00e9ratifs dans lequel ce rouage anonyme se retrouve embarqu\u00e9 par son souci de bien faire et de naviguer le march\u00e9 du travail tel qu\u2019il le peut \u2026 sans forc\u00e9ment regarder les cons\u00e9quences sociales autour.<\/p><p>Si le message est donc \u00e0 tirer du sous-texte et de la fa\u00e7on dont se d\u00e9roulent les \u00e9v\u00e9nements (et celle dont ils sont racont\u00e9s par cette mise en sc\u00e8ne atypique) dans un propos historique (avec certains parall\u00e8les contemporains) certainement abouti, il faut aussi souligner que \u00ab\u00a0Notre Salut\u00a0\u00bb ne choisit clairement pas l\u2019accessibilit\u00e9 (peut-\u00eatre \u00e0 l\u2019image du secteur perdu dans le Limousin o\u00f9 le protagoniste est affect\u00e9, qui sait\u00a0?) au risque (peut-\u00eatre) d\u2019\u00e9puiser plus que d\u2019\u00e9merveiller \u2026\u00a0?<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>Rapha\u00ebl Sallenave<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42480e6 elementor-widget__width-initial exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42480e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\"><p>What a strange choice to portray this man&rsquo;s journey in such a quasi-documentary style!<\/p><p>This choice is brought to life through a handheld camera that zooms in and out on the characters and their conversations; its sometimes unsteady movements shift from one person to another as if to show everyone\u2019s reactions, without a single shot-reverse-shot (a technique too formal in cinema for the style used here), giving free rein to the actors\u2019 improvisation as if the camera were filming a meeting in the style of a news report, letting it unfold while showing as much as possible (sometimes even disregarding the frame). While this style may seem disorienting, it nevertheless reflects its theme quite well \u2013 which is none other than the everyday banality of evil.<\/p><p>From that point on, the choice to depict the protagonist\u2019s journey \u2013 whose struggle for recognition and social ambition is rooted in the daily life of the 1940s, in a France where social survival often depended on indifference toward the rest of the world \u2013 through a deliberately mundane style (even in the nighttime lighting, which feels somewhat artificial), clearly establishes a sense of coherence between the narrative and its visual representation. Furthermore, this approach creates a sense of spontaneity in the narrative (as if we were following events as they unfold [a sort of historical vlog?], in other words, as if history were being written somewhat in real time). This can thus create a kind of resonance between these \u201chistorical\u201d events and our own \u201cpresent\u201d, which is amplified by choices in dialogue and acting that may seem very contemporary (while keeping a voice-over in the style of a letter correspondence, which is genuinely period-appropriate), along with anachronistic musical choices. Emmanuel Marre thus chooses to straddle both worlds, in a style that is certainly accomplished, but whose deliberate blurring of time translates into a surprising and unsettling <em>mise-en-sc\u00e8ne<\/em> that can ultimately hinder historical immersion.<\/p><p>The co-director of \u201cZero Fucks Given\u201d draws here on his own family history to paint a portrait of a man who, at first glance, seems ordinary, with no real goal other than to survive in this context \u2013 hoping, on the one hand, to get closer to power and, on the other, to promote his book, in which he sets forth his views on the greatness of France within a system of efficiency worthy of French-style Taylorism. To allow us to dive into his daily life, the film avoids presenting overarching themes throughout its 2 hours and 30 minutes (at the risk of overwhelming the viewer), instead illustrating the succession of choices, decisions, and demands that this anonymous cog finds himself caught up in \u2013 driven by his desire to do well and maneuver through the job market as best he can\u2026 without giving much thought to the social consequences around him.<\/p><p>While the message is thus to be drawn from the subtext and the way events unfold (and the way they are conveyed through this unconventional approach) within a historical narrative (which draws some present-day parallels) that is certainly well-crafted, it should also be pointed out that \u201cA Man of his Time\u201d clearly does not aim for accessibility (perhaps mirroring the remote area in the Limousin region where the protagonist is stationed \u2013 who knows?), thereby running the risk (perhaps) of exhausting the audience rather than captivating them\u2026?<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
