Et c\u2019est de ce mouvement permanent que va na\u00eetre leur lumineuse et \u00e9prouvante histoire d\u2019amour que l\u2019on va suivre sur une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es dans ce beau r\u00e9cit d\u2019apprentissage multiple : du surf \u00e0 l\u2019amour en passant par le chagrin dans un film d\u2019animation sensoriel qui nous transporte dans un ensemble d\u2019\u00e9motions vari\u00e9es sur lesquelles on ne peut que surfer entre remous r\u00e9confortants et dramatiques.<\/p><p>Adapt\u00e9e de la BD d\u2019AJ Dungo publi\u00e9e en 2019, \u00ab In Waves \u00bb est une histoire tr\u00e8s personnelle que la r\u00e9alisatrice fran\u00e7aise Phuong Mai Nguyen (Culot\u00e9es) s\u2019est appropri\u00e9e pour son premier long-m\u00e9trage tout en t\u00e2chant de pr\u00e9server l\u2019essentiel, \u00e0 savoir la pudeur et la d\u00e9licatesse de ce r\u00e9cit d\u2019amour fusionnel et de profonde admiration. Elle r\u00e9ussit ainsi \u00e0 recr\u00e9er l\u2019\u00e9quilibre entre retenue et pathos pour mettre en lumi\u00e8re la r\u00e9silience qui \u00e9mane de ce couple tout en orientant la narration vers cette urgence de vivre telle une ode \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9nergie de la jeunesse. Elle s\u2019autorise donc \u00e0 ne pas reproduire les graphismes de la BD et s\u2019oriente vers un univers plus color\u00e9 et textur\u00e9.<\/p><p>A la bichromie aux tons pastel et turquoises de l\u2019\u0153uvre originale, la dessinatrice pr\u00e9f\u00e8re ainsi des couleurs chatoyantes aux tons roses et azurs. Si elle garde l\u2019expressivit\u00e9 du dessin d\u2019AJ, sa po\u00e9sie et son motif des vagues, elle propose sa propre interpr\u00e9tation de l\u2019eau \u00e0 travers d\u2019ondoyantes sc\u00e8nes aquatiques et de magnifiques transitions qui transforment par exemple un drap en vague ou enferment l\u2019oc\u00e9an dans une gourde sans oublier les traits d\u2019un visage qui se mat\u00e9rialisent en vagues, jouant sur la proximit\u00e9 mat\u00e9rielle et graphique entre l\u2019eau et l\u2019encre. Et cette dimension sensorielle se prolonge jusque dans une belle composition \u00e0 quatre mains d\u2019Oklou et Rob qui collaborent pour la premi\u00e8re fois. A la crois\u00e9e de la musique \u00e9lectro et orchestrale, leurs ch\u0153urs et nappes de cordes a\u00e9riennes, leurs synth\u00e9tiseurs enveloppants et leur piano grave forment une m\u00e9lodie envo\u00fbtante qui conf\u00e8re une vraie po\u00e9sie et profondeur au r\u00e9cit.<\/p><p>Au gr\u00e9 d\u2019une narration qui se d\u00e9ploie sur trois p\u00e9riodes \u2013 chacune marqu\u00e9e par sa palette de couleurs et ses choix graphiques \u2013 \u00ab\u00a0In Waves\u00a0\u00bb entrelace l\u2019intime et le sensationnel tout en remontant aux sources m\u00eame de la discipline au c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit. Dans un fort contraste avec la trame principale, le film entrecoupe ainsi son intrigue de s\u00e9quences en noir et blanc qui retracent la mythologie du surf \u00e0 Hawa\u00ef dans un int\u00e9ressant contrepoint avec nos deux protagonistes m\u00eame si cette dynamique ne vogue pas assez loin. Quant au r\u00e9cit non-lin\u00e9aire dont la lumi\u00e8re \u00e9volue progressivement de l\u2019\u00e9clatant au blafard pour refl\u00e9ter le difficile parcours des protagonistes, elle casse quelque peu un certain suspense pour privil\u00e9gier l\u2019image rayonnante de la surfeuse.<\/p><p>Ce choix de nous propulser aupr\u00e8s d\u2019un AJ plus \u00e2g\u00e9 dessinant leur histoire permet d\u2019embl\u00e9e d\u2019anticiper l\u2019apparition de la maladie et la lutte de Kristen, telle une mar\u00e9e in\u00e9luctable qui semble inlassablement couler vers le dramatique. Cette structure narrative construit ainsi un parall\u00e8le entre l\u2019oc\u00e9an et le chagrin qui, au fond, viennent tous deux par vagues. A chacun alors d\u2019apprendre tant bien que mal \u00e0 tomber, \u00e0 se relever, \u00e0 tenir debout sur sa planche de vie malgr\u00e9 les remous, fragile peut-\u00eatre, tremblant parfois, mais toujours en \u00e9quilibre. And it is from this constant movement that their radiant yet painful love story will emerge \u2013 a story we\u2019ll follow over the course of a decade in this beautiful tale of multiple journeys of self-discovery: from surfing to love, through grief, in a sensory animated film taking us on a journey through a range of emotions that we can\u2019t help but ride, from heartwarming to heart-breaking.<\/p><p>Adapted from AJ Dungo\u2019s 2019 graphic novel, \u201cIn Waves\u201d is a deeply personal story that French director Phuong Mai Nguyen (Culot\u00e9es) has made her own for her debut feature film, while striving to preserve its essence: the modesty and tenderness of this tale of a deeply connected love and profound admiration. She thus succeeds in recreating the balance between restraint and pathos to highlight the resilience that radiates from this couple, while steering the narrative toward an urgency to live\u2014like an ode to the energy of youth. She therefore chooses not to replicate the comic book\u2019s artwork, opting instead for a more colorful and textured aesthetic.<\/p><p>Instead of the two-color palette of pastel and turquoise tones in the original work, the illustrator prefers iridescent colors in shades of pink and azure. While she keeps the expressiveness of AJ\u2019s drawing, its poetry, and its wave motif, she offers her own take on water through flowing aquatic scenes and gorgeous transitions such as transforming a sheet into a wave or enclosing the ocean in a bottle, not to mention the lines of a face that morph into waves, drawing on the physical and graphic parallels between water and ink. An animation that succeeds in elevating its narrative not only seems particularly well-suited to an artist\u2019s autobiographical story but also emerges as the very soul of such a film.<\/p><p>The fluidity of these transitions and the beauty of the animation thus draw on the depiction of the sea to evoke that sensation of gliding, which is central to the narrative. And this sensory dimension extends into a beautiful four-handed composition by Oklou and Rob, who are collaborating for the first time. Blending electronic and orchestral music, their harmonies and ethereal string layers, their immersive synthesizers, and their deep piano create a spellbinding melody that lends true poetry and depth to the story.<\/p><p>Through a narrative that unfolds across three time frames \u2013 each characterized by its own color palette and visual style \u2013 \u201cIn Waves\u201d weaves together the intimate and the breathtaking while delving into the very origins of the sport at the heart of the story. In stark contrast to the main storyline, the film intersperses its plot with black-and-white sequences that revisit the mythology of surf culture in Hawaii, creating an interesting counterpoint to our two protagonists \u2013 even if this dynamic doesn\u2019t go quite far enough. As for the non-linear narrative, whose lighting gradually shifts from bright to pale to reflect the protagonists\u2019 difficult journey, it somewhat undermines the suspense in favor of highlighting the surfer\u2019s radiant presence.<\/p><p>This choice to catapult us alongside an older AJ as he sketches out their story allows us to anticipate early on the onset of the illness and Kristen\u2019s struggle \u2013 like an inescapable tide that seems to flow relentlessly toward disaster. This narrative structure thus draws a parallel between the ocean and grief, both of which, at their core, come in waves. It is then up to each of us to learn, as best we can, to fall, to get back up, and to stand firm on the surfboard of our lives despite the rough seas \u2013 perhaps fragile, sometimes trembling, but always holding our balance. Like a tide of emotions on which we can float, surf or get swept away by the undertow, this film offers everything from the majestic to the soul-stirring.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
