Dix ans apr\u00e8s la pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente interpr\u00e9tation, ce n\u2019aurait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tonnant qu\u2019Hollywood produise une \u00e9ni\u00e8me version de ses grands classiques. Mais ce film n\u2019est pas sur Robin des Bois, il est tout au plus sur la l\u00e9gende de Robin des Bois, et plus sp\u00e9cifiquement encore, il est r\u00e9ellement sur l\u2019\u00e9criture m\u00eame d\u2019une l\u00e9gende. Il n\u2019y a qu\u2019\u00e0 voir le poster qui montre bel et bien la stature du h\u00e9ros avec son arc caract\u00e9ristique mais pas son visage (alors qu\u2019un film h\u00e9ro\u00efque profiterait \u00e9videmment du visage reconnaissable de Hugh Jackman pour sa promotion). Ce n\u2019est pas sans raison \u2026 qui est-il ? Qui est cet homme ? Qui \u00e9tait l\u2019homme derri\u00e8re la l\u00e9gende ? Qui est-il (ou \u00e9tait-il) r\u00e9ellement ? De m\u00eame le titre ne fait pas que reprendre le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre nom du h\u00e9ros des pauvres (dans un titre fran\u00e7ais pour une fois plus appropri\u00e9 que l\u2019original), \u00ab On l\u2019appelait Robin des Bois \u00bb renvoyant au(x) r\u00e9cit(s) racont\u00e9(s) sur cet homme, cette figure mythique. C\u2019est un film de mythe qui d\u00e9construit la l\u00e9gende et questionne la v\u00e9racit\u00e9 des r\u00e9cits racont\u00e9s \u00e0 travers le temps. En cela il est plus \u00e0 mettre en relation avec l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation du mythe scandinave d\u2019Amleth dans \u00ab The Northman \u00bb ou la relecture de la l\u00e9gende arthurienne dans \u00ab The Green Knight \u00bb.<\/p><p>Le r\u00e9alisateur de \u00ab Pig \u00bb Michael Sarnoski met donc ici en sc\u00e8ne un Robin des Bois d\u00e9peint comme voleur et brigand sanguinaire sans piti\u00e9. A supposer que ses joyeux compagnons aient jamais exist\u00e9 (dans cette histoire ou la r\u00e9alit\u00e9), ils se sont s\u00e9par\u00e9s depuis des lustres. Pas de Dame Marianne ou de Sh\u00e9rif de Nottingham, on ne croise ici que Petit Jean sous un autre nom. La grandeur de la l\u00e9gende n\u2019est ici qu\u2019un mensonge, \u00e0 laquelle m\u00eame Robin lui-m\u00eame ne croit plus (ou ne veut plus croire). Le statut de figure altruiste grav\u00e9 dans l\u2019imaginaire collectif dispara\u00eet ainsi au profit d\u2019un monstre irrationnel, d\u2019un homme vieillissant attendant une mort digne apr\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es de dette de sang qui ne peut venir que des descendants de ses innocentes victimes venus perp\u00e9tuer un cycle infernal de vengeance o\u00f9 violence n\u2019appelle que violence.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29169 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6464.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6464.jpeg 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6464-300x155.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6464-1024x529.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6464-768x397.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Un tel monstre ne peut \u00eatre pardonn\u00e9 par personne (ni les autres ni lui-m\u00eame) par une ultime bonne action, et cette prise de conscience ne peut que le rendre plus vuln\u00e9rable encore \u00e0 l\u2019insurmontable montagne qu\u2019une reconstruction de sa vie \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 repr\u00e9sente. Peut-il alors exister une forme de r\u00e9demption pour un tel homme\u00a0? Aux confins du monde celtique, \u00ab\u00a0On l\u2019appelait Robin des Bois\u00a0\u00bb offre \u00e0 la fois une \u00e9tude de personnage et une \u00e9tude de mythe \u00e0 travers un beau portrait empreint d\u2019humanit\u00e9 mettant en lumi\u00e8re la part d\u2019ombre, de regrets et de souffrances d\u2019une telle figure, et un anti-conte immacul\u00e9 d\u00e9mystifiant la l\u00e9gende avant de s\u2019ouvrir sur une nouvelle vie \u2026 qui sera faite de r\u00e9demption ou de p\u00e9nitence\u00a0?<\/p><p>Dans une rupture de ton assez d\u00e9sar\u00e7onnante, le film se divise en effet en deux parties distinctes \u00e0 mesure que l\u2019histoire \u00e9volue de l\u2019action \u00e0 la r\u00e9flexion. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 la premi\u00e8re captive son spectateur, la seconde approfondit son sujet. L\u2019on passe ainsi d\u2019un premier acte stimulant dans une brutalit\u00e9 et une cruaut\u00e9 rares o\u00f9 une impressionnante puissance nihiliste fait de la violence le seul horizon, \u00e0 un second plus introspectif dans un drame de chambre o\u00f9 l\u2019on discute de son \u00e2me et de son \u00e9tat, l\u2019horizon s\u2019ouvrant vers une (impensable ?) r\u00e9conciliation avec soi-m\u00eame pour un protagoniste qui a du mal \u00e0 accepter que son pass\u00e9 de violence et son renouveau de paix puisse coexister. Et la transition entre ces deux univers se fait progressivement lors d\u2019un trajet en mer o\u00f9 le cadre s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve progressivement de l\u2019homme rampant dans la boue, affrontant ses d\u00e9mons et cherchant litt\u00e9ralement la mort \u00e0 un homme qui peut peu \u00e0 peu se tient debout, cherchant \u00e0 saisir sa vie et \u00e0 regarder plus loin. Ce changement de format d\u2019image du large et serr\u00e9 2 :39 au 1 :66 en hauteur cr\u00e9\u00e9e une transition entre l\u2019univers du hors-la-loi et celui de l\u2019homme, entre un monde de conflits et de sang o\u00f9 l\u2019on subsiste par les l\u00e9gendes et un de gu\u00e9rison et de paix o\u00f9 l\u2019on existe par la r\u00e9paration. En d\u2019autres mots, le premier acte raconte la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de la l\u00e9gende quand le second raconte le mythe que ce r\u00e9cit fait de cette l\u00e9gende. Dans un r\u00e9cit \u00e9clair\u00e9 de feu et de sang, la crasse et la rage laissent place \u00e0 la sym\u00e9trie de plans semblables \u00e0 des tableaux, tel un voyage d\u2019un enfer \u00e0 un paradis dans de magnifiques d\u00e9cors nord-irlandais berc\u00e9s par les musiques et chants celtiques qui nous embarquent dans cet univers \u00e0 la beaut\u00e9 froide et sombre. Jouant sur le r\u00e9alisme d\u2019une l\u00e9gende anglaise, le film joue de ses personnages aux forts accents celtiques \u00e0 commencer par un Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd (Nosferatu\u00a0; \u00c7a) offrant une interpr\u00e9tation bestiale de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 aux antipodes de celle paisible de Jodie Comer (Killing Eve\u00a0; The Last Duel) face \u00e0 un excellent Hugh Jackman (Prisoners\u00a0; The Son\u00a0; et Wolverine bien s\u00fbr) qui r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 incarner un personnage aussi d\u00e9testable qu\u2019attachant de la dimension agressive de ce meurtrier \u00e0 la g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 qu\u2019il peut dissimuler.<\/p><p>Les mythes sont faits pour \u00eatre revisit\u00e9s. Alors pourquoi ne pas proposer une version remettant en question la conception partag\u00e9e d\u2019une l\u00e9gende ? Ten years after the last one, it wouldn\u2019t have been surprising if Hollywood had made yet another version of one of its great old classics. But this movie isn\u2019t about Robin Hood; at most, it\u2019s about the legend of Robin Hood, and more specifically, it\u2019s really about the very process of creating a legend. Just look at the poster, which clearly shows the hero\u2019s imposing stature with his signature bow but not his face (even though a heroic film would obviously capitalize on Hugh Jackman\u2019s famous face for its promotion). There\u2019s a reason for this\u2026 who is he? Who is this man? Who was the man behind the legend? Who is he (or was he) really? Similarly, the title does more than simply refer to the famous name of the champion of the poor (in a French title that, for once, is more appropriate than the original); (lit.) \u201cThey Called Him Robin Hood\u201d alludes to the story(ies) told about this man, this mythical figure. It is a film about myth that deconstructs the legend and questions the veracity of the stories passed down through the ages. In this respect, it is more closely related to the interpretation of the Scandinavian myth of Amleth in \u201cThe Northman\u201d or the reimagining of the Arthurian legend in \u201cThe Green Knight.\u201d<\/p><p>Michael Sarnoski, the director of \u201cPig\u201d, thus portrays Robin Hood here as a bloodthirsty, merciless thief and bandit. Assuming his merry men ever existed (in this story or in reality), they parted ways ages ago. There\u2019s no Lady Marian or Sheriff of Nottingham; here, we only meet Little John under a different name. The grandeur of the legend is nothing but a lie here \u2013 one that even Robin himself no longer believes (or no longer wants to believe). Can there, then, be any form of redemption for such a man? In the far reaches of the Celtic world, \u201cThe Death of Robin Hood\u201d offers both a character study and an exploration of myth through a beautiful, deeply human portrait that highlights the darkness, regrets, and suffering inherent in such a figure, as well as a pristine anti-fairy tale that demystifies the legend before opening up to a new life\u2026 one that will be shaped by redemption or penance?<\/p><p>In a rather disconcerting shift in tone, the film is clearly divided into two distinct parts as the story evolves from action to reflection. While the first part captivates the viewer, the second delves deeper into its subject. We thus move from a thrilling first act of rare brutality and cruelty, where an impressive nihilistic force makes violence the only horizon, to a more introspective second act that takes the form of a chamber drama in which the protagonist grapples with his soul and his state of being, with the horizon opening toward an (unthinkable?) reconciliation with oneself for someone who struggles to accept that his violent past and his newfound peace can coexist. And the transition between these two worlds occurs gradually during a sea journey, as the setting shifts progressively from a man crawling through the mud \u2013 confronting his demons and literally seeking death \u2013 to a man who can gradually stand on his own two feet, seeking to take hold of his life and look ahead. This shift in aspect ratio \u2013 from the wide, tight 2:39 to more vertical 1:66 \u2013 creates a transition between the world of the outlaw and that of the man, between a world of conflict and bloodshed where people survive through legends, and a world of healing and peace where people live through atonement. In other words, the first act depicts the reality of the legend, while the second act depicts the myth that this narrative creates from that legend. In a narrative lit by fire and blood, grime and rage give way to the symmetry of shots reminiscent of paintings \u2013 like a journey from a hell to a paradise set against magnificent Northern Irish backdrops, infused with Celtic music and songs that draw us into this world of cold, dark beauty. Drawing on the realism of an English legend, the film showcases its characters with strong Celtic accents, starting with Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd (Nosferatu; It), who delivers a bestial portrayal of humanity, the polar opposite of Jodie Comer\u2019s (Killing Eve; The Last Duel), alongside an excellent Hugh Jackman (Prisoners; The Son; and Wolverine, of course), who manages to embody a character who is as hatred-worthy as he is endearing \u2013 ranging from the murderer\u2019s aggressive nature to the generosity he can conceal.<\/p><p>Myths are meant to be revisited. So why not offer a version that challenges the widely accepted conception of a legend? More than just an unconventional interpretation of Robin Hood, Michael Sarnoski explores the very notion of legend, how it is constructed through fabrications and rumors, to examine the stories we
