plus in\u00e9gal qu\u2019ambitieux, Antonin Baudry conclut son diptyque de mani\u00e8re bien plus convaincante. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 \u00ab L&rsquo;\u00c2ge de fer \u00bb peinait \u00e0 faire cohabiter ses diff\u00e9rentes intrigues et multipliait les ruptures de ton, \u00ab J&rsquo;\u00e9cris ton nom \u00bb trouve un \u00e9quilibre narratif nettement plus ma\u00eetris\u00e9. Les enjeux s&rsquo;entrecroisent avec davantage de fluidit\u00e9, le montage para\u00eet plus naturel, l&rsquo;action plus immersive, et ces 2h40 offrent une belle s\u00e9ance de cin\u00e9ma populaire qui assume pleinement son ambition de blockbuster historique \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise.<\/p><p>Cette fois, le conflit ne se joue presque plus contre les Allemands, judicieusement laiss\u00e9s hors champ. Le v\u00e9ritable affrontement devient politique. Face \u00e0 un Roosevelt d\u00e9sireux de r\u00e9duire la France \u00e0 un simple protectorat am\u00e9ricain et \u00e0 une R\u00e9sistance profond\u00e9ment divis\u00e9e, de Gaulle ne cherche plus seulement \u00e0 gagner la guerre du pr\u00e9sent, mais aussi celle du futur : il tente d&#8217;emp\u00eacher la disparition de la France comme nation souveraine. La guerre se m\u00e8ne ainsi autant dans les bureaux de Londres et d&rsquo;Alger que sur les champs de bataille nord-africains, o\u00f9 la campagne de Leclerc rappelle que le destin de l&rsquo;Europe s&rsquo;est aussi jou\u00e9 de l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e.<\/p><p>La complicit\u00e9 contrari\u00e9e que De Gaulle entretient avec Churchill est \u00e0 nouveau une r\u00e9ussite du film, entre tension diplomatique, admiration r\u00e9ciproque et humour, au gr\u00e9 d\u00e9sormais d\u2019une confrontation franco-fran\u00e7aise arbitr\u00e9e outre-Atlantique face \u00e0 un Thierry Lhermitte excellemment cabotin, voire caricatural dans son interpr\u00e9tation d\u2019un Giraud pantin offrant un bien meilleur dosage dans l\u2019\u00e9quilibre entre comique et s\u00e9rieux que dans le premier volet.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28977 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Mais si ce second opus fonctionne mieux, c\u2019est avant tout par ses enjeux interconnect\u00e9s et la circulation entre ses diff\u00e9rents lieux d\u2019action qui voient par exemple \u00e9clore la figure du g\u00e9n\u00e9ral Leclerc incarn\u00e9e avec force par Niels Schneider dans un r\u00f4le obstin\u00e9, insubordonn\u00e9 et profond\u00e9ment libre, qui devient un v\u00e9ritable second personnage dont la trajectoire nourrit le portrait du G\u00e9n\u00e9ral. L\u2019intrigue m\u00e9tropolitaine sur un Jean Moulin cherchant \u00e0 f\u00e9d\u00e9rer les r\u00e9seaux de r\u00e9sistance gagne \u00e9galement en int\u00e9r\u00eat tant son action dialogue enfin avec les \u00e9v\u00e9nements de Londres et d&rsquo;Alger, m\u00eame si cette trame reste trop peu d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e. De mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale le portrait de la R\u00e9sistance reste la faiblesse r\u00e9currente de ces deux volets \u00e0 l\u2019image du personnage fictif d\u2019Anamaria Vartolemei toujours aussi artificiel \u2013 cens\u00e9 repr\u00e9senter plusieurs figures f\u00e9minines \u2013 sans jamais lui offrir le moindre arc narratif ou utilit\u00e9 sc\u00e9naristique.<\/p><p>Si la dynamique est sensiblement la m\u00eame entre les deux opus, le dosage entre les tons et l\u2019\u00e9quilibrage narratif accouchent donc d\u2019un ressenti bien diff\u00e9rent offrant une conclusion sinc\u00e8rement satisfaisante \u00e0 ce double portrait national. Car, en choisissant d&rsquo;achever son r\u00e9cit non pas \u00e0 Berlin mais \u00e0 Paris, Antonin Baudry rappelle finalement que son sujet n&rsquo;\u00e9tait jamais la guerre elle-m\u00eame, mais bien la renaissance politique de la France. Whereas \u201cTilting Iron\u201d struggled to weave its various storylines together and featured frequent shifts in tone, \u201cSovereign Edge\u201d strikes a much more masterful narrative balance. The storylines intertwine more smoothly, the editing feels more natural, the action is more immersive, and these 2 hours and 40 minutes offer a delightful piece of popular cinema that fully embraces its ambition as a French-style historical blockbuster.<\/p><p>This time, the conflict is hardly being fought against the Germans, who are wisely left out of the picture. The real battle has become political. Faced with a Roosevelt eager to reduce France to a mere American protectorate and a deeply divided Resistance, de Gaulle is no longer seeking merely to win this war, but also the one to come: he is trying to prevent the disappearance of France as a sovereign nation. The war is thus fought as much in the offices of London and Algiers as on the battlefields of North Africa, where Leclerc\u2019s campaign serves as a reminder that the fate of Europe was also decided on the other side of the Mediterranean.<\/p><p>The strained yet strong relationship between De Gaulle and Churchill is once again a highlight of the film, navigating diplomatic tension, mutual admiration, and humor, now subject to a French-French dispute arbitrated from across the Atlantic, pitted against a Thierry Lhermitte who is superbly hammy \u2013 even caricature-like \u2013 in his portrayal of Giraud as a puppet, striking a far better balance between comedy and seriousness than in the first installment.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28977 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Snapshot_6419-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>But if this second installment works better, it is above all because of its interconnected storylines and the back-and-forth between its various locations, which, for example, see the emergence of General Leclerc \u2013 powerfully portrayed by Niels Schneider in a role that is stubborn, insubordinate, and deeply free \u2013 who becomes a true supporting character whose journey fuels the portrait of the General. The domestic plotline \u2013 centered on Jean Moulin\u2019s efforts to unite the resistance networks \u2013 also becomes more compelling as his actions finally connect with the events in London and Algiers, even if this storyline remains underdeveloped. Overall, the portrayal of the Resistance remains the recurring weakness of these two parts, as exemplified by the fictional character of Anamaria Vartolemei, who remains as artificial as ever \u2013 supposedly representing several female figures \u2013 without ever being given the slightest story arc or narrative purpose.<\/p><p>While the qualities and flaws are essentially the same in both films, the feeling is not. The tone and narrative balance ultimately create a very different experience, offering a genuinely satisfying conclusion to this dual national portrait. For by choosing to conclude his story not in Berlin but in Paris, Antonin Baudry ultimately reminds us that his real subject was never the war itself, but rather France\u2019s political rebirth.
