Marqu\u00e9e par des \u00e9v\u00e8nements historiques d\u2019ampleur internationale, une famille \u00e9gyptienne traverse les \u00e9poques via le r\u00e9cit d\u2019Ahmed. Cinq p\u00e9riodes diff\u00e9rentes mais cinq ann\u00e9es charni\u00e8res qui vont bouleverser leurs vies.<\/p><p>1967 en particulier est une ann\u00e9e effervescente, o\u00f9 tout s\u2019encha\u00eene et o\u00f9 tout va tr\u00e8s vite. Ahmed, sa famille, ses voisins et ses amis fusent dans tous les sens et dans des espaces exigus (autant l\u2019appartement que la place de la ville)\u00a0; \u00e7a parle, \u00e7a crie, \u00e7a vacarme. Premi\u00e8re partie rythm\u00e9e et ent\u00eatante mais qui offre une excellente entr\u00e9e en mati\u00e8re dans la capitale panarabe.<\/p><p>Car le moins qu\u2019on puisse dire, c\u2019est que la vie d\u2019Ahmed est ponctu\u00e9e de chocs et de r\u00e9v\u00e9lations noy\u00e9s dans un marasme national : la Guerre des Six Jours, celle du Kippour, les \u00e9meutes de la faim, l\u2019assassinat de Sadate et, plus l\u00e9ger, les victoires du club de Zamalek. Le Cairote, peu \u00e0 peu d\u00e9sabus\u00e9, d\u00e9senchant\u00e9 et d\u00e9prim\u00e9, peut n\u00e9anmoins compter sur l\u2019amour et l\u2019humour de ses proches, autant de sa m\u00e8re que de ses fr\u00e8res ou de Liz, sa correspondante puis plus qu\u2019amie autrichienne.<\/p><p>Construit comme un pentaptyque de chroniques savamment assembl\u00e9es, \u00ab\u00a0Notre Histoire\u00a0\u00bb a cette capacit\u00e9 de rendre hommage \u00e0 la culture et \u00e0 la mentalit\u00e9 \u00e9gyptiennes de ces trois d\u00e9cennies. Le film, aux \u00e9clairages chauds et aux nombreux gros plans, retranscrit en effet une ambiance \u00e9motionnellement complexe mais nimb\u00e9e de nationalisme avec les continuelles et patriotiques chansons, d\u00e9clarations et rencontres footballistiques diffus\u00e9es incessamment par la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision et la radio constamment allum\u00e9es \u2013 de sorte qu\u2019on est presque hypnotis\u00e9s, notamment par ce speaker d\u2019\u00c9tat qui s\u2019adresse r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement \u00e0 nous face cam\u00e9ra.<\/p><p>N\u00e9anmoins, c\u2019est bien le m\u00e9lange des tons et l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 de toute une cohorte qui touchent ici. Tous les personnages, y compris les secondaires, deviennent attachants en raison de leur(s) parcours de vie et de leurs caract\u00e8res si diff\u00e9rents. Le film \u00e9meut mais fait ainsi un bien fou, d\u2019autant plus lorsque l\u2019on apprend qu\u2019il est n\u00e9 des anecdotes familiales de son r\u00e9alisateur. Against the backdrop of historic events of international significance, an Egyptian family navigates these eras through Ahmed\u2019s eyes. Five distinct periods \u2013 but five pivotal years \u2013 that will turn their lives upside down.<\/p><p>1967, in particular, is a bustling year, when everything happens in rapid succession and moves at a breakneck pace. Ahmed, his family, his neighbors, and his friends are constantly rushing about in every direction and in tight spaces (both the apartment and the city square); there\u2019s talking, shouting, and a constant din. This first part is fast-paced and captivating, offering an excellent glimpse into the pan-Arab capital.<\/p><p>Indeed, to say the least, Ahmed\u2019s life is full of shocks and revelations set against a backdrop of national turmoil: the Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, the hunger riots, the assassination of Sadat, and \u2013 on a lighter note \u2013 the successes of the Zamalek football club. The Cairo native, gradually becoming disillusioned, disheartened, and depressed, can nevertheless rely on the love and humor of his loved ones \u2013 his mother, his brothers, and Liz, his Austrian friend who eventually become more than that.<\/p><p>Structured as a five-part chronicle, skillfully woven together, \u201cThe Stories\u201d pays tribute to Egyptian culture and the Egyptian mindset over these three decades. With its warm lighting and numerous close-ups, the film effectively captures an emotionally complex atmosphere tinged with nationalism, thanks to the constant stream of patriotic songs, speeches, and football games broadcast nonstop on television and radio \u2013 which are always on \u2013 to the point that we are almost hypnotized, particularly by the state announcer who regularly addresses us directly on camera.<\/p><p>Nevertheless, it\u2019s really the mix of tones and the authenticity of the entire ensemble that make this film so moving. All the characters \u2013 including the supporting ones \u2013 become endearing through their life stories and their very different personalities. The film touches the heart and feels incredibly uplifting, especially when you learn that it was inspired by the director\u2019s own family stories.
