paysage cin\u00e9matographique fran\u00e7ais qui affiche une ambition rare. Cette grosse prise de risque venant de <em>Path\u00e9<\/em> ressemble \u00e0 un film que les Fran\u00e7ais n\u2019ont presque jamais tent\u00e9, d\u2019autant plus \u00e0 cette \u00e9chelle avec deux films \u00e0 la suite pour un budget cumul\u00e9 de plus de 70M\u20ac. L\u2019objectif n\u2019est autre que de raconter l\u2019histoire de notre pays dans un grand spectacle \u00e0 gros budget au cours d\u2019une fresque jouant sur le double sens de son titre, \u00e0 la fois portrait d\u2019un homme, d\u2019une nation et d\u2019une id\u00e9e : raconter la naissance de la France libre comme une grande \u00e9pop\u00e9e populaire.<\/p><p>Polytechnicien devenu diplomate puis sc\u00e9nariste de la BD et du film \u00ab\u00a0Quai D\u2019Orsay\u00a0\u00bb (r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Bertrand Tavernier) avant de passer derri\u00e8re la cam\u00e9ra avec l\u2019excellent \u00ab\u00a0Le Chant du Loup\u00a0\u00bb, Antonin Baudry met d\u00e9j\u00e0 le pied dans le monde des blockbusters \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise. Mais qui dit gros moyen, dit volont\u00e9 assum\u00e9e de rechercher un large public. Or le sc\u00e9nariste qui avait trouv\u00e9 un tr\u00e8s fin \u00e9quilibre entre comique et s\u00e9rieux, entre profondeur et l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 dans son portrait de Dominique de Villepin peut-il reproduire le m\u00eame juste milieu sur une figure comme celle de De Gaulle, lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019agit de raconter les pages de l\u2019histoire de notre nation\u00a0? Autrement dit, peut-on r\u00e9ellement faire une hagiographie critique\u00a0? Qui plus est lorsqu\u2019on ambitionne aussi de raconter l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019une France libre qui se r\u00e9pand \u2026<\/p><p>A mi-parcours, la r\u00e9ponse ne peut \u00eatre que partielle, mais elle semble au minimum mitig\u00e9e, voire particuli\u00e8rement bancale. Sur l\u2019ensemble le principal point d\u2019interrogation reste ce d\u00e9calage moins savamment dos\u00e9 entre comique et s\u00e9rieux qui repose ici plus sur certains personnages que sur des situations, \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019un personnage invent\u00e9 v\u00e9ritable <em>comic relief<\/em>, figure propre aux blockbusters am\u00e9ricains, dont le but est d\u2019all\u00e9ger toutes les sc\u00e8nes dans lesquelles il se trouve sans v\u00e9ritable autre fonction narrative. Or, vu la gravit\u00e9 des sc\u00e8nes et l\u2019ampleur du projet, un tel personnage est d\u2019abord marrant puis fonci\u00e8rement inutile, cr\u00e9ant une rupture de ton inad\u00e9quate.<\/p><p>Il faut dire que cette premi\u00e8re partie cherche tout du long \u00e0 nous rattraper tant son introduction lui a compliqu\u00e9 la t\u00e2che dans une surcharge de plans symboliques mis en sc\u00e8ne avec mauvais go\u00fbt. Mais force est de constater, qu\u2019elle y arrive progressivement notamment gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une interpr\u00e9tation incarn\u00e9e de Simon Abkarian dans le r\u00f4le de cet homme isol\u00e9 et exil\u00e9 \u00e0 Londres mais obstin\u00e9, parfois per\u00e7u comme illumin\u00e9 mais qui inspire profond\u00e9ment courage \u00e0 ses compatriotes dans une aura magn\u00e9tique qui pourrait convaincre un Polonais qu\u2019il est Fran\u00e7ais (on ne saisit pas toujours tr\u00e8s bien exactement comment il arrive \u00e0 f\u00e9d\u00e9rer autour de sa personne, mais cela fait aussi \u2013 il est vrai \u2013 partie du mythe qui est \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre ici).<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28565 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Si l\u2019on consid\u00e8re ce projet comme un double portrait, il est clair que \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019\u00e2ge de fer\u00a0\u00bb r\u00e9ussit un bien meilleur portrait du G\u00e9n\u00e9ral en restituant autant sa puissance mythologique qu\u2019en d\u00e9sacralisant sa stature dans un r\u00e9cit qui construit l\u2019ic\u00f4ne qui n\u2019est pas encore l\u00e0. A Londres, de Gaulle ne dirige ni territoire, ni arm\u00e9e digne de ce nom. Il n\u2019a aucune v\u00e9ritable l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9, pourtant il agit comme tel et s\u2019en fa\u00e7onne une de toute pi\u00e8ce face \u00e0 un Churchill un peu caricatural mais r\u00e9ussi avec Simon Russell Beale. En revanche le portrait de la France Libre s\u2019av\u00e8re quant \u00e0 lui beaucoup plus faible autour, d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, de figures secondaires port\u00e9es par un excellent casting (Beno\u00eet Magimel, Matthieu Kassovitz, Niels Schneider) mais rel\u00e9gu\u00e9es au rang de cam\u00e9os honorifiques sans v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9veloppement, et d\u2019un autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de personnages illustrant la contestation sur place et les d\u00e9buts d\u2019une r\u00e9sistance fran\u00e7aise d\u00e9sorganis\u00e9e. Non seulement le film joue beaucoup moins sur la fibre comique aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ces jeunes Parisiens libres \u2013 instaurant d\u2019embl\u00e9e un profond d\u00e9calage \u2013 mais il les cantonne aux sc\u00e8nes embl\u00e9matiques de prise de conscience, de ralliement, de choix d\u2019action etc, sans les \u00e9toffer plus que \u00e7a au point de ne pas cr\u00e9er d\u2019attachement ou d\u2019\u00e9motion autour du personnage de Fernand sur lequel le film s\u2019ouvre et se conclut pourtant (de mani\u00e8re assez aboutie d\u2019ailleurs)\u00a0!<\/p><p>A tout vouloir raconter, l\u2019intrigue se disperse et alourdit donc un r\u00e9cit qui appara\u00eet surcharg\u00e9 lorsque l\u2019on conclut sur la bataille de Bir Hakeim, v\u00e9ritable acte fondateur de la France libre, aupr\u00e8s du G\u00e9n\u00e9ral Koening jusque-l\u00e0 figure plus que secondaire. Alors certes, la s\u00e9quence d\u2019action est r\u00e9ussie et offre une premi\u00e8re mise en sc\u00e8ne sur grand \u00e9cran depuis 84 ans de cette bataille historique fran\u00e7aise de la seconde guerre mondiale, mais souffrant de probl\u00e8mes d\u2019\u00e9chelle elle manque \u00e9galement un morceau de bravoure qui appara\u00eet au bout du compte, et comme le reste de l\u2019ensemble, tr\u00e8s emphatique. Malheureusement le film oscille constamment entre le portrait \/ l\u2019exploration de la naissance d\u2019une chim\u00e8re devenue r\u00e9alit\u00e9 \u00e0 Londres \u2013 donc un film de bureaux \u00e0 l\u2019image des \u00ab\u00a0Heures Sombres\u00a0\u00bb ou de \u00ab\u00a0La Ruse\u00a0\u00bb \u2013 et une fresque patriotico-militaro-civile entre l\u2019empire colonial et la r\u00e9sistance m\u00e9tropolitaine \u2013 dont le ton ne se pr\u00eate pas \u00e0 la critique ou aux d\u00e9tours humoristiques. The goal is nothing less than to tell the story of the country in a big-budget spectacle \u2013 an epic that plays on the double meaning of its title, depicting a man, a nation, and an idea all at once: to portray the birth of Free France as a grand, popular epic.<\/p><p>After graduating from the \u00c9cole Polytechnique, becoming a diplomat, and then working as a screenwriter for the comic book and film \u201cThe French Minister\u201d (directed by Bertrand Tavernier) before stepping behind the camera with the outstanding \u201cThe Wolf\u2019s Call\u201d, Antonin Baudry is already setting foot in the world of French-style blockbusters. Yet big-budget productions inevitably entail a commitment to reaching a wide audience. But can the screenwriter \u2013 who struck a very delicate balance between comedy and seriousness, between depth and lightheartedness in his portrait of Dominique de Villepin \u2013 achieve the same balance with a historical figure like De Gaulle, when it comes to chronicling the pages of our nation\u2019s history? In other words, is it really possible to make a critical hagiography? Especially when one also aims to explore the rapidly spreading idea of a Free France\u2026<\/p><p>Halfway through this double movie, the answer can only be partial, but it seems, at the very least, mixed \u2013 if not downright flawed. Overall, the main point of contention remains the less-than-subtly balanced shift between comedy and earnestness, which here relies more on certain characters than on situations \u2013 much like a made-up character serving as comic relief, a typical trope in American blockbusters, whose sole purpose is to lighten the mood in every scene he appears in, without any other real narrative purpose. However, given the gravity of the scenes and the scale of the venture, such a character is funny at first but ultimately pointless, creating an inappropriate disconnect in tone.<\/p><p>To be fair, this first half tries throughout to win us over, given how much its opening made things difficult for it with an overload of symbolic shots staged poorly. But the fact remains that it gradually succeeds, thanks in particular to Simon Abkarian\u2019s compelling performance as this isolated, exiled, yet stubborn man in London \u2013 sometimes perceived as a visionary, yet one who deeply inspires courage in his compatriots with a magnetic aura that could convince a Pole that he is French (it\u2019s not always entirely clear exactly how he manages to rally people around him, but that, admittedly, is also part of the myth at work here).<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28565 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Snapshot_6320-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>If we consider this project as a double portrait, \u201cTilting Iron\u201d clearly succeeds in painting a far better portrait of the General by both capturing his mythological power and demystifying his stature in a story that shapes the icon that does not yet exist. In London, de Gaulle commands neither territory nor an army worthy of the name. He has no real legitimacy, yet he acts as if he does and forges one from scratch in the face of a Churchill who is somewhat cartoonish but well portrayed by Simon Russell Beale. In contrast, the depiction of the Free French Forces proves much weaker, centered, on the one hand, on supporting characters played by an excellent cast (Beno\u00eet Magimel, Matthieu Kassovitz, Niels Schneider) but relegated to the ranks of honorary cameos without any real development, and on the other hand, on characters illustrating the local dissent and the beginnings of a disorganized French resistance. Not only does the film rely much less on comedy when depicting these young, free Parisians \u2013 creating a stark contrast from the outset \u2013 but it also confines them to emblematic scenes of awakening, rallying, taking action, and so on, without fleshing them out any further, to the point that it fails to create any emotional connection or attachment to the character of Fernand, on whom the film nevertheless opens and closes (quite successfully, in fact)!<\/p><p>In trying to cover everything, the plot becomes scattered and thus weighs down a narrative that feels overloaded by the time it reaches the Battle of Bir Hakeim \u2013 the true founding moment of the Free French Forces \u2013 centered on General Koening, who until then had been little more than a minor character. Admittedly, the action sequence is well-executed and offers the first big-screen depiction in 84 years of this historic French battle of World War II, but, due to issues with scale, it also lacks a moment of true glory, which ultimately \u2013 like the rest of the film \u2013 comes across as overly emphatic. Unfortunately, the film constantly oscillates between portraying and exploring the birth of a pipe dream that became reality in London \u2013 thus an office-based film along the lines of \u201cDarkest Hour\u201d or \u201cOperation Mincemeat\u201d \u2013 and a patriotic, military, and civilian epic set against the backdrop of the colonial empire and the metropolitan resistance \u2013 whose tone lends itself neither to criticism nor to humorous side notes. What remains is a film with fairly credible educational intentions that nevertheless manages to keep us more or less engaged with the project until the landing of the second installment in the coming weeks\u2026<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
