comp\u00e9tition au Festival de Cannes, compos\u00e9 d\u2019un casting de r\u00eave et r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par un Iranien \u00e0 la r\u00e9putation internationale, \u00ab Histoires Parall\u00e8les \u00bb semble beaucoup diviser, autant pour sa forme que pour son fond. Intrigant ou ennuyeux ? Innovant ou d\u00e9j\u00e0-vu ? Riche ou pauvre ?<\/p><p>Librement inspir\u00e9 de l\u2019un des \u00e9pisodes du \u00ab D\u00e9calogue \u00bb de Krzysztof Kie\u015blowski (rien que \u00e7a), \u00ab Histoires Parall\u00e8les \u00bb narre le voyeurisme d\u2019une autrice (Isabelle Huppert) qui \u00e9crit un roman \u00e0 partir de l\u2019espionnage de ses voisins d\u2019en face (Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel et Pierre Niney), jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019elle rencontre un homme myst\u00e9rieux (Adam Bessa) qui va faire s\u2019entrem\u00ealer fiction(s) et r\u00e9alit\u00e9(s).<\/p><p>Le propos du long-m\u00e9trage est on ne peut plus clair : l\u2019imaginaire verse dans le r\u00e9el et vice-versa. Un poncif qu\u2019Asghar Farhadi (\u00ab Une S\u00e9paration \u00bb, \u00ab Le Pass\u00e9 \u00bb, \u00ab Un H\u00e9ros \u00bb) met en sc\u00e8ne de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 la fois tr\u00e8s sobre \u2013 tr\u00e8s peu de couleur, tr\u00e8s peu de musique, beaucoup de silence \u2013 et tr\u00e8s intellectuelle \u2013 avec une esp\u00e8ce de \u00ab triptyque image-son-\u00e9criture \u00bb (citons-le) cens\u00e9 illustrer l\u2019inter-influence de la cr\u00e9ation et du r\u00e9el (les textes, les bruitages, les d\u00e9tails).<\/p><p>En ressort une intrigue (en fait, deux ensembles d\u2019intrigues) au rythme lent avec des personnages banals, peu d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s ou carr\u00e9ment insondables qui n\u2019aident pas vraiment \u00e0 rentrer dans les enjeux flous voire confus que laisse poindre le film : un faux triangle amoureux, un voyeurisme vieux jeu, une vaine cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9, une usurpation d\u2019identit\u00e9(s) ?<\/p><p>\u00ab Histoires Parall\u00e8les \u00bb ne se veut certes pas vide : na\u00eet une petite curiosit\u00e9 pour les protagonistes, leurs quelques actions, r\u00e9actions et interactions, mais le film semble passer \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 des interrogations que le sc\u00e9nario esquisse. Quel est le but fondamental du personnage d\u2019Adam Bessa ? Pourquoi cette romanci\u00e8re persiste-t-elle \u00e0 d\u00e9p\u00e9rir dans son appartement ? Comment le trio observ\u00e9 peut-il imploser suite \u00e0 de pr\u00e9sum\u00e9es fausses r\u00e9v\u00e9lations ? Il joue ici sur l\u2019entrem\u00ealement entre fiction et r\u00e9alit\u00e9 en questionnant jusqu\u2019o\u00f9 l\u2019imagination peut aller. A quel point l\u2019imaginaire peut non seulement se nourrir du r\u00e9el (jusqu\u2019au voyeurisme voire \u00e0 l\u2019espionnage) mais aussi nourrir le r\u00e9el (jusqu\u2019\u00e0 en influencer des d\u00e9cisions) \u2026\u00a0?<\/p><p>Si le film souffre de quelques longueurs, en particulier dans un d\u00e9but assez laborieux, il s\u2019av\u00e8re quand m\u00eame r\u00e9ussi dans l\u2019ensemble gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une bonne \u00e9criture (qui joue des \u00e9l\u00e9ments d\u2019artificialit\u00e9 jusqu\u2019au m\u00e9tier de bruiteur), \u00e0 un superbe casting (notamment avec une superbe Virginie Efira \u00e0 la fois belle, mouvante et \u00e9mouvante dans ses personnages), et une tr\u00e8s bonne construction (qui fait notamment le parall\u00e8le entre sa premi\u00e8re et derni\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne en faisant \u00e9voluer son protagoniste de son statut de voleur \u00e0 celui d\u2019\u00e9crivain \u00e0 travers cette \u00e9trange sensation de connivence au milieu d\u2019inconnus). Mais le fait est qu\u2019il y a en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 deux protagonistes, d\u2019abord Isabelle Huppert, puis Adam Bessa (Les Fant\u00f4mes) \u00e0 mesure que le livre change d\u2019auteur, ce qui aboutit \u00e0 une seconde partie progressivement plus prenante et intrigante.<\/p><p>Or, si la fiction d\u2019une romanci\u00e8re acari\u00e2tre peu \u00e0 peu d\u00e9pass\u00e9e par sa propre cr\u00e9ation est int\u00e9ressante, l\u2019intrigue aurait pu \u00eatre plus forte en confrontant plus fiction et r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et en jouant plus subtilement sur les indices d\u2019artificialit\u00e9 (cheveux, bagues, tatouages) pour enrichir la dimension myst\u00e9rieuse du film et introduire plus de doute chez le spectateur, histoire de le questionner et de l\u2019accrocher plus. Intriguing or boring? Innovative or d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu? Profound or shallow?<\/p><p>Loosely based on one of the episodes of Krzysztof Kie\u015blowski\u2019s \u201cDecalogue\u201d (no less), \u201cParallel Tales\u201d chronicles the voyeurism of a writer (Isabelle Huppert) who pens a novel based on spying on her neighbors across the street (Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, and Pierre Niney), until she meets a mysterious man (Adam Bessa) who will blur the lines between fiction(s) and reality.<\/p><p>The film\u2019s message could not be clearer: the imaginary spills over into reality and vice versa. A trope that Asghar Farhadi (\u201cA Separation\u201d, \u201cThe Past\u201d, \u201cA Hero\u201d) presents in a manner that is both very understated \u2013 very little color, very little music, a lot of silence \u2013 and very intellectual \u2013 with a sort of \u201cimage-sound-writing triptych\u201d (to quote him) meant to illustrate the mutual influence of creation and reality (the texts, the sound effects, the details).<\/p><p>The end result is a slow-paced plot (actually, two sets of plots) with mundane, underdeveloped, or downright inscrutable characters who don\u2019t really help the viewer get to grips with the vague, even confusing issues the film hints at: a fake love triangle, old-fashioned voyeurism, futile creativity, identity theft?<\/p><p>\u201cParallel Tales\u201d is certainly not empty: a slight curiosity arises regarding the protagonists, their few actions, reactions, and interactions, but the film seems to miss the mark on the questions the screenplay raises. These are all questions that get lost in an obscure, perplexing yet not uninteresting reflection on our projections onto the world and the people \u2013 in fact, perfect strangers \u2013 who surround us.<\/p><p>Axel Chevalier<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28146 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Snapshot_6241.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Snapshot_6241.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Snapshot_6241-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Snapshot_6241-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Snapshot_6241-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>The second French film by the Iranian director who was instrumental in bringing (modern) Iranian cinema to European audiences, thirteen years after the excellent \u201cThe Past\u201d starring Tahar Rahim and B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Bejo, \u201cParallel Tales\u201d marks the first venture into a more conceptual and artificial approach in Asghar Farhadi\u2019s extensive filmography, which until now has been driven primarily by a spirit of social realism. Here, he plays with the intertwining of fiction and reality, questioning just how far the imagination can go. To what extent can the imagination not only feed off reality (to the point of voyeurism or even espionage) but also feed into reality (to the point of influencing decisions) \u2026?<\/p><p>While the film drags a little in some places, particularly in a rather slow-moving first half, it is nonetheless a solid piece of work overall, thanks to strong writing (which plays with elements of artifice, right down to the sound effects technician\u2019s craft), a superb cast (including a fantastic Virginie Efira, who is at once beautiful, captivating, and moving in her roles), and a very strong narrative structure (which draw parallels between the first and last scenes by evolving the protagonist from a thief to a writer through this strange sense of complicity amidst strangers). In fact, there are actually two protagonists: first Isabelle Huppert, then Adam Bessa (Ghost Trail) as the novel shifts authors, resulting in a second half that becomes progressively more gripping and engaging.<\/p><p>However, while the premise of a cantankerous novelist gradually being overtaken by her own creation is interesting, the plot could have been stronger by pitting fiction against reality more directly and by playing more subtly on clues to artificiality (hair, rings, tattoos) to add to the film&rsquo;s mystery and make the viewer doubt things more, just to get them thinking and keep them hooked. Playing with the different perspectives of the same novel written by two authors could have therefore been a more thrilling way to explore this idea: if art imitates life, does life imitate
