Mais ce serait omettre son fr\u00e8re a\u00een\u00e9 qui lui a toujours compliqu\u00e9 la vie. Lorsqu\u2019elle apprend son d\u00e9c\u00e8s, c\u2019est donc sans \u00e9motion excessive qu\u2019elle part rejoindre son ex-belle-s\u0153ur pour, une nouvelle fois, s\u2019occuper des affaires d\u2019un fr\u00e8re chaotique et menteur. Entre confidences et fous rires inattendus, cette romanci\u00e8re habitu\u00e9e \u00e0 s\u2019inventer des histoires va pouvoir en \u00e9crire ou en r\u00e9\u00e9crire une nouvelle \u00e0 mesure qu\u2019elle red\u00e9couvre son fr\u00e8re \u2026<\/p><p>Adapt\u00e9 d\u2019une part de l\u2019essai autobiographique de Riko Murai, et d\u2019autre part des souvenirs de l\u2019autrice, ainsi que des propres r\u00e9flexions du cin\u00e9aste sur ce sujet qui le travaille, \u00ab\u00a0Mon Grand Fr\u00e8re et Moi\u00a0\u00bb explore les liens familiaux et les variations de perception d\u2019une m\u00eame personne d\u2019un individu \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Il montre ainsi comment ceux qui restent s\u2019efforcent de vivre apr\u00e8s la disparition d\u2019un proche, mais dresse aussi un portrait du disparu qui se dessine \u00e0 travers l\u2019image qu\u2019en livrent ceux qui l\u2019ont connu. Le film ausculte ainsi la relation conflictuelle de Riko et de son fr\u00e8re (qui n\u2019a d\u2019ailleurs pas d\u2019autre nom \u2013 conf\u00e9rant une dimension assez universelle \u00e0 ces questionnements), dont le personnage \u00e9volue \u00e0 travers les regards des autres. Quel que soit le s\u00e9rieux du sujet, son style consiste \u00e0 mettre en lumi\u00e8re la tendresse et le comique d\u2019\u00eatres humains attachants dans des situations difficiles. Il aime faire des films fondamentalement optimistes dans un formidable et d\u00e9concertant travail d\u2019\u00e9quilibriste o\u00f9 la mort n\u2019est jamais ici un sujet pesant mais devient plut\u00f4t un espace de connexion inattendue. M\u00eame s\u2019il s\u2019agit de la fin d\u2019une vie, on ne peut ainsi s\u2019emp\u00eacher de sourire dans ce beau film \u00e0 la sensibilit\u00e9 et la d\u00e9licatesse japonaises port\u00e9 par un formidable petit casting de seulement cinq acteurs autour d\u2019une K\u014d Shibasaki dans un r\u00f4le inhabituel \u00e0 contre-emploi, d\u2019un Joe Odagiri joyeusement loufoque et d\u2019une Hikari Mitsushima remarquable de bienveillance entre sentiment et ressentiment.<\/p><p>Dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne pleine de fantaisie et de po\u00e9sie, le cin\u00e9aste donne vie aux pens\u00e9es imagin\u00e9es de nos proches \u00e0 travers de belles sc\u00e8nes d\u2019apparition et une subtile \u00e9volution o\u00f9 un appartement d\u2019abord sinistre devient de plus en plus lumineux \u00e0 mesure qu\u2019il se vide des objets ayant appartenu au d\u00e9funt, comme s\u2019ils transmettaient ses souvenirs aux personnages qui le nettoie et se l\u2019approprie peu \u00e0 peu. Tous les dialogues du fr\u00e8re ne sont ainsi que les pens\u00e9es que lui pr\u00eatent les diff\u00e9rents personnages qui pensent \u00e0 lui et qu\u2019ils n\u2019osent en fin de compte pas sortir eux-m\u00eames. Trait\u00e9 avec pudeur, \u00ab\u00a0Mon Grand Fr\u00e8re et Moi\u00a0\u00bb creuse l\u2019identit\u00e9 comme une mati\u00e8re mouvante \u00e0 travers un fr\u00e8re qui a voulu se reconstruire en m\u00eame temps qu\u2019un Japon post-Fukushima (s\u00e9isme qui semble avoir profond\u00e9ment marqu\u00e9 le r\u00e9alisateur), et \u00e9voque \u2013 entre les lignes \u2013 la difficile place de la s\u0153ur dans une fratrie japonaise. But that would mean leaving out her older brother, who has always made her life difficult. When she learns of his death, she sets off without much emotion to join her ex-sister-in-law and, once again, take care of the messy affairs of a chaotic, lying brother. Amid confessions and unexpected bursts of laughter, this novelist \u2013 accustomed to inventing stories \u2013 will find herself writing or rewriting a new one as she gets to know her brother all over again\u2026<\/p><p>Adapted in part from Riko Murai\u2019s autobiographical essay, in part from the author\u2019s own memories, and in part from the filmmaker\u2019s own reflections on this subject that has been on his mind, \u201cBring Him Down to a Portable Size\u201d explores family bonds and how perceptions of the same person vary from one individual to another. It thus shows how those left behind struggle to carry on after the loss of a loved one, while also painting a portrait of the deceased that emerges through the memories of those who knew him. The film thus examines the conflict-ridden relationship between Riko and her brother (who, incidentally, has no other name \u2013 lending a rather universal dimension to these questions), whose character evolves through the eyes of others. No matter how serious the subject matter might be, his style focuses on highlighting the tenderness and humor of endearing human beings in difficult situations. He makes films that are fundamentally optimistic, striking a remarkable and unsettling balance where death is never a heavy subject but rather becomes a space for unexpected connection. Even when it comes to the end of a life, you can&rsquo;t help but smile in this beautiful film, imbued with Japanese sensitivity and delicacy, carried by a wonderful small cast of just five actors centered around K\u014d Shibasaki in an unusual, against-type role, a joyfully zany Joe Odagiri, and a remarkably kind-hearted Hikari Mitsushima, navigating the line between sentiment and resentment.<\/p><p>With a fantasy-filled and poetic direction, the filmmaker brings to life the imagined thoughts of our loved ones through beautiful scenes of apparitions and a subtle transformation in which an apartment that is initially gloomy becomes increasingly bright as it is emptied of the objects that belonged to the deceased, as if they were passing on his memories to the characters who are cleaning it and gradually making it their own. All the brother\u2019s dialogue is thus merely the thoughts attributed to him by the various characters who are thinking of him \u2013 thoughts they ultimately dare not voice themselves.
