Dans un style \u00e0 contre-temps au rythme lent variant entre plans fixes et <em>steadycam<\/em> suivant ses protagonistes dans d\u2019innombrables longs couloirs ou immenses pi\u00e8ces, il filme la normalit\u00e9 de leur quotidien scolaire, une normalit\u00e9 qui se d\u00e9lite progressivement dans le drame qui se noue derri\u00e8re cet apparent calme o\u00f9 protagonistes et points de vue se croisent constamment. Cette forme de narration fragment\u00e9e, d\u00e9construite et non-lin\u00e9aire installe une atmosph\u00e8re particuli\u00e8rement froide dans la description des \u00e9v\u00e9nements (et d\u2019autant plus dans l\u2019acte final) et un morbide sens du suspens interrogeant qui sera le tueur\u00a0? Puis qui va survivre\u00a0? Et est-ce que nos personnages sont les futurs survivants ou les futures victimes\u00a0?<\/p><p>Avec ce r\u00e9cit limit\u00e9 au jour J et d\u00e9nu\u00e9 de toute sorte d\u2019explication, de motivation ou m\u00eame de d\u00e9veloppement de personnages, Gus Van Sant traite un fait divers sans digression sociologique pour en regarder uniquement les faits dans une brutalit\u00e9 inexplicable avec d\u00e9tachement, myst\u00e8re et introspection. In a slow-paced, offbeat style that alternates between static shots and Steadicam shots following his protagonists through countless long hallways or vast rooms, he captures the normality of their school days \u2013 a normality that gradually crumbles in the drama unfolding behind this apparent calm, where protagonists and perspectives constantly cross paths. This fragmented, deconstructed, and non-linear narrative style creates a particularly cold atmosphere in the depiction of events (and all the more so in the final act) and a morbid sense of suspense: who will be the killer? Who will survive? And are our characters the future survivors or the future victims?<\/p><p>By limiting his narrative to the day of the incident and omitting any explanation, motivation, or even character development, Gus Van Sant tackles a real-life story without any sociological detours, focusing solely on the facts with an inexplicable brutality with detachment, mystery, and introspection. He thereby crafts a film that is neither moralizing, nor reassuring, nor excessively dark \u2013 one that views the world as it is, without black-and-white thinking, like a waking
