Un homme ruin\u00e9 par un emprunt en vient \u00e0 kidnapper le fils du courtier qu\u2019il juge responsable de sa situation. Il r\u00e9clame l\u2019annulation de sa dette et surtout des excuses officielles ! Prise d\u2019otage suivie par les m\u00e9dias locaux, l\u2019Am\u00e9rique va vite se passionner pour cette affaire. Chacun choisit alors son camp. Est-il un criminel qui doit \u00eatre arr\u00eat\u00e9 ou simplement une victime qui r\u00e9clame justice ?<\/p><p>Huit ans apr\u00e8s son dernier film, Gus Van Sant est de retour en salles avec ce fait divers historique dont il tire une com\u00e9die dramatique qui joue \u00e9tonnamment sur un ton d\u00e9cal\u00e9 d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part quand bien m\u00eame cette m\u00eame histoire aurait tr\u00e8s bien pu \u00eatre racont\u00e9e d\u2019un point de vue beaucoup plus sombre, dramatique et tendu. Ici, le r\u00e9alisateur de \u00ab\u00a0Will Hunting\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Elephant\u00a0\u00bb (Palme d\u2019Or) et \u00ab\u00a0Promised Land\u00a0\u00bb dresse un portrait ambivalent du preneur d\u2019otage, sans en faire l\u2019apologie et sans jamais ignorer la violence de ses actes, mais en jouant en permanence sur les contrastes de cet homme ouvert aux autres, fonci\u00e8rement gentil et respectueux. M\u00ealant empathie et sentiment politique, il se concentre ainsi sur sa relation avec l\u2019otage dans un m\u00e9lange d\u00e9concertant de cordialit\u00e9 et sinc\u00e9rit\u00e9 d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, et de contrainte et hargne de l\u2019autre.<\/p><p>Comme toujours tr\u00e8s bon dans la direction d\u2019acteurs, il s\u2019appuie ici sur l\u2019excellente performance de Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd (\u00c7a\u00a0; Nosferatu) qui campe un anti-h\u00e9ros d\u00e9sarmant, parfait de nervosit\u00e9 mal contr\u00f4l\u00e9e, \u00e0 la fois dr\u00f4le et path\u00e9tique, face \u00e0 son otage tiraill\u00e9 entre une peur relativement ma\u00eetris\u00e9e et un syndrome de Stockholm naissant, incarn\u00e9 avec justesse par Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la jeune Myha\u2019la Herrold et des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans Colman Domingo et Al Pacino. Gus Van Sant prolonge ce d\u00e9calage jusque dans une mise en sc\u00e8ne jouant de couleurs fades plaquant ses personnages dans un d\u00e9cor endormi et sous tension anesth\u00e9si\u00e9e \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image du r\u00e9cent \u00ab\u00a0The Mastermind\u00a0\u00bb qui d\u00e9pouillait aussi son \u00e9poque d\u2019un vernis habituellement plus m\u00e9lancolique \u2013 et traite ses sc\u00e8nes d\u2019action avec distance en y ins\u00e9rant des photos en noir et blanc de reconstitution de la sc\u00e8ne.<\/p><p>La distance semble d\u2019ailleurs \u00eatre le ton appliqu\u00e9 \u00e0 ce r\u00e9cit sans pathos ni morale qui ne d\u00e9veloppe jamais trop ni les motivations de notre anti-h\u00e9ros, ni le contexte des faits pour mettre en sc\u00e8ne une histoire qui pose des questions sans proposer vraiment de pistes de r\u00e9ponses, une histoire qui interroge sans vraiment prendre parti. R\u00e9sultat, on ne sait trop quoi penser du traitement d\u2019un tel sujet \u2013 et c\u2019est volontaire, \u00e0 l\u2019heure o\u00f9 l\u2019arrestation de Luigi Mangione d\u00e9fraye la critique par exemple. A man ruined by a loan kidnaps the son of the broker he holds responsible for his situation. He demands that his debt be forgiven and, above all, an official apology! With the local media covering the hostage situation, America quickly becomes captivated by the case. Everyone then chooses a side. Is he a criminal who must be arrested, or simply a victim demanding justice?<\/p><p>Eight years after his last film, Gus Van Sant returns to theaters with this historical news story, which he has turned into a comedy-drama that takes a surprisingly offbeat tone from the very start \u2013 even though the same story could very well have been told from a much darker, more dramatic, and tension-filled perspective. Here, the director of \u201cGood Will Hunting\u201d, \u201cElephant\u201d (Palme d\u2019Or), and \u201cPromised Land\u201d paints an ambivalent portrait of the hostage-taker, without glorifying him and without ever ignoring the violence of his actions, but constantly drawing on the contrasts of this man who is open to others, fundamentally kind, and respectful. Blending empathy and political sentiment, he thereby focuses on his relationship with the hostage in a disconcerting mix of cordiality and sincerity on one hand, and coercion and hostility on the other.<\/p><p>As good as ever at directing actors, he relies here on the excellent performance of Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd (It; Nosferatu), who portrays a disarming anti-hero, perfectly embodying poorly controlled nervousness \u2013 both funny and pathetic \u2013 as he faces his hostage, torn between relatively controlled fear and a budding Stockholm syndrome, vividly portrayed by Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), alongside the young Myha\u2019la Herrold and industry veterans Colman Domingo and Al Pacino. Gus Van Sant extends this dissonance into a visual style that plays with muted colors, placing his characters in a sleepy setting under a numbing tension \u2013 much like the recent \u201cThe Mastermind\u201d, which also stripped its era of its usually more melancholic glow \u2013 and handles its action scenes with distance by inserting black-and-white photographs of the recreated scene.<\/p><p>This sense of distancing seems to be the tone of this story, which is devoid of pathos or moralizing; it never delves too deeply into either our anti-hero\u2019s motivations or the context of the events, instead presenting a narrative that raises questions without really offering any answers, a story that probes without truly taking sides. As a result, we\u2019re not quite sure what to make of the handling of such a subject \u2013 and this is intentional, at a time when Luigi Mangione\u2019s arrest is generating controversy, for example. Less message-driven than his previous films, this is the portrait of a man demanding compensation in a gesture that is, at its core, political even if he doesn\u2019t frame it that way, and which the film consequently doesn\u2019t treat as such either \u2013 while conveying a certain rebellious spirit, particularly in the soundtrack, by turning the TV anchor into an African-American DJ in a move that merges struggles, and by examining how the news is turned into a show in the television media.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
