d\u2019enfance, deux jeunes hommes n\u00e9s dans le m\u00eame village du nord de l\u2019Inde, de deux castes dites \u2018inf\u00e9rieures\u2019. Ces citoyens qui s\u2019\u00e9chinent aux t\u00e2ches les plus ingrates de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, dans les champs, les mines ou les usines de textile. Beaucoup renoncent, mais pas no deux h\u00e9ros qui refusent de r\u00eaver petit et que rien ni personne ne pourra arr\u00eater \u2026 D\u00e8s la sc\u00e8ne d\u2019ouverture, les enjeux et le cadre est ainsi donn\u00e9 : sur un quai noir de monde, ils se jettent \u00e0 bord d\u2019un wagon les emmenant vers un concours qu\u2019ils esp\u00e8rent providentiel, pleins d\u2019\u00e9nergie et d\u2019optimisme face \u00e0 une masse sociale les entravant er les engloutissant d\u2019avance dans un flot d\u2019injustices. Car il existe bien \u00e0 leurs yeux une porte de sortie \u00e0 cette fatalit\u00e9 sociale : \u00eatre fonctionnaire. \u201cQuand tu portes l\u2019uniforme, personne ne fait attention \u00e0 ta caste ou ta religion\u201d. M\u00eame si le pays a officiellement l\u00e9gif\u00e9r\u00e9 (depuis 1949 quand m\u00eame !) pour proscrire la discrimination des castes \u2018inf\u00e9rieures\u2019, le climat politique et la mont\u00e9e de l\u2019extr\u00eame droite au pouvoir facilitent un racisme ambiant dans un pays \u00e0 grande majorit\u00e9 hindoue et souvent islamophobe, o\u00f9 il en faut pour allumer la m\u00e8che de la x\u00e9nophobie.<\/p><p>Le second film de Neeraj Ghaywan explore les fractures d\u2019une Inde contemporaine min\u00e9e par les clivages sociaux et les luttes silencieuses de personnes invisibilis\u00e9es. C\u2019est une fresque s\u2019\u00e9talant sur plusieurs ann\u00e9es aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de presque-fr\u00e8res qui rient, r\u00eavent et s\u2019encouragent mutuellement m\u00eame lorsque le monde qui les entoure les \u00e9crase. C\u2019est une histoire d\u2019\u00e9preuves sociales, une histoire de douleur, une histoire de liens entre deux amis qui cherchent \u00e0 gagner une dignit\u00e9 au sein d\u2019un syst\u00e8me qui les n\u00e9glige perp\u00e9tuellement. C\u2019est une \u00e9pop\u00e9e amicale entre entraide, joie et inqui\u00e9tudes d\u00e9peinte tout en d\u00e9licatesse et nuance des abords calmes de la rivi\u00e8re au vacarme des grandes usines qui nous tient en haleine dans ce dense p\u00e9riple de vie. Si la premi\u00e8re partie a le m\u00e9rite d\u2019\u00eatre claire, elle appuie aussi sur son discours social au d\u00e9tour d\u2019exposition contextuelle et de dialogues verbalisant l\u2019injustice subie par les protagonistes. Many give up, but not these two heroes, who refuse to dream small and whom nothing and no one can stop\u2026 From the opening scene, the stakes and the setting are set: on a crowded platform, they rush onto a train car taking them to a test they hope will be their salvation, full of energy and optimism in the face of a social mass that hinders them and swallows them up in a flood of injustices. For in their eyes, there is indeed a way out of this social inevitability: becoming a civil servant. \u201cWhen you wear the uniform, no one pays attention to your caste or your religion.\u201d Even though the country has officially legislated (since 1949, no less!) to outlaw discrimination against \u201clower\u201d castes, the political climate and the rise of the far right to power foster a pervasive racism in a country with a large Hindu majority and often Islamophobic tendencies, where it doesn\u2019t take much to ignite the fuse of xenophobia.<\/p><p>Neeraj Ghaywan\u2019s second film explores the divides in contemporary India, a country riven by social divisions and the silent struggles of marginalized people. It is an epic spanning several years, following two men who are almost like brothers as they laugh, dream, and support one another even when the world around them is crushing them down. It is a story of social trials, a story of pain, a story of the bond between two friends seeking to earn dignity within a system that perpetually disregards them.
