Beyrouth la multi-mill\u00e9naire est ainsi un puits sans fond d\u2019Histoire mais aussi d\u2019histoires, au-dessus desquelles scintillent des \u00ab \u00c9toiles d\u2019espoir et de douleur \u00bb (en arabe, \u0646\u062c\u0648\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0645\u0644 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0644\u0645, titre original de ce film).<\/p><p>Et c\u2019est \u00e0 Beyrouth que se place celle du premier long-m\u00e9trage de fiction du r\u00e9alisateur libanais Cyril Aris. L\u2019histoire de Nino et Yasmina \u2013 que Dieu, le destin, les co\u00efncidences, le hasard ou le chaos (qui sait ?) unissent, d\u00e9sunissent et r\u00e9unissent \u00e0 travers les d\u00e9cennies. Nino, g\u00e9rant d\u2019un restaurant italo-libanais maladivement optimiste et souriant qui improvise avec les gal\u00e8res. Yasmina, consultante en affaires politiques et \u00e9conomiques terriblement pessimiste et d\u00e9sabus\u00e9e qui d\u00e9sesp\u00e8re face \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Et pourtant, ces deux antagonistes qui parfois se perdent pour se retrouver, se compl\u00e8tent, et leur relation n\u2019en devient que plus belle.<\/p><p>\u00ab Un monde fragile et merveilleux \u00bb, c\u2019est un film \u00e0 l\u2019image de l\u2019ancienne Perle de l\u2019Orient : dense, intense, plein de contradictions et d\u2019interrogations, d\u2019imagination et d\u00e9sillusion. La photographie et la mise en sc\u00e8ne alternent ainsi constamment et fluidement entre diff\u00e9rents registres, entre diff\u00e9rentes distances, entre diff\u00e9rentes couleurs, passant par exemple de plans d\u2019ensemble grisonnants de la capitale libanaise \u00e0 de gros plans chaleureux sur les visages. La r\u00e9alisation se permet m\u00eame quelques s\u00e9quences au rythme et au format beaucoup plus saccad\u00e9s, quasiment clippesques, o\u00f9 tout s\u2019emballe dans une \u00e9motion indescriptible tant elle est puissante. Des jeux de lumi\u00e8re renversants apparaissent aussi \u00e7\u00e0 et l\u00e0 pour appuyer des bascules. L\u2019histoire est \u00e0 la fois l\u00e9g\u00e8re, r\u00eaveuse, comique et romantique, mais aussi pesante, d\u00e9primante, dramatique et tragique. Ces entrem\u00ealements et ruptures de tons sont certes port\u00e9s en premier lieu par Yasmina, Nino et leurs proches, mais deux lieux r\u00e9els et\/ou fantasm\u00e9s deviennent eux aussi des personnages \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. Beyrouth et ladite \u00cele insufflent et portent en effet les stigmates d\u2019un monde cyclique, injuste et violent que Nino comme Yasmina aiment et d\u00e9testent, retrouvent et fuient selon l\u2019\u00e9tat du pays et de leur moral. Il y a de fait une profonde po\u00e9sie derri\u00e8re le cadre que cr\u00e9ent l\u2019\u00cele et Beyrouth : que ce soit dans le bonheur ou dans la noirceur, une immuable beaut\u00e9 se cache, m\u00eame lors d\u2019une d\u00e9tonation.<\/p><p>D\u2019o\u00f9 une m\u00e9taphorique, existentielle et transcendantale ambivalence qui se refl\u00e8te dans le titre m\u00eame de cette \u0153uvre. Bien qu\u2019il aborde et retranscrive des situations sp\u00e9cifiquement libanaises, une certaine universalit\u00e9 \u00e9mane de ce sublime \u00ab Monde fragile et merveilleux \u00bb. Yasmina et Nino \u2013 au passage interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s avec douceur et incandescence par Mounia Akl et Hasan Akil \u2013 forment non seulement les deux faces d\u2019une m\u00eame d\u00e9chirure de l\u2019identit\u00e9 nationale du Pays du C\u00e8dre, mais incarnent aussi les tiraillements qui nous traversent toutes et tous. Sont ainsi interrog\u00e9es les notions d\u2019amour, de famille, de transmission, de traumatisme, d\u2019exil (et d\u2019autres encore) dans un contexte o\u00f9 la guerre et l\u2019instabilit\u00e9 (int\u00e9rieures comme ext\u00e9rieures) laissent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement peu de place \u00e0 l\u2019effervescence joyeuse de la vie \u2013 que l\u2019on ch\u00e9rit et d\u00e9vore alors p\u00e9riodiquement.<\/p><p>Ce long-m\u00e9trage \u00e0 la fois magnifique et chagrin constitue en somme un condens\u00e9 d\u2019humanit\u00e9 qui, malgr\u00e9 nos \u00e9ternelles difficult\u00e9s et introspections, nous exhorte \u00e0 garder espoir co\u00fbte que co\u00fbte. Beirut, with its history stretching back thousands of years, is thus a bottomless well of History but also of stories, above which shine the \u201cStars of Hope and Pain\u201d (the original title of this film in Arabic, \u0646\u062c\u0648\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0645\u0644 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0644\u0645).<\/p><p>And Beirut is the setting for Lebanon director Cyril Aris\u2019s debut feature. This is the story of Nino and Yasmina \u2013 whom God, fate, coincidence, chance, or chaos (who knows?) bring together, tear apart, and reunite over the decades. Nino, the manager of an Italian-Lebanese restaurant, is a hopelessly optimistic, smiling man who improvises his way through life\u2019s hardships. Yasmina, a political and economic consultant, is a terribly pessimistic and disillusioned woman who despairs in the face of reality. And yet, these two opposites \u2013 who sometimes lose each other only to later find each other again \u2013 complement one another, and their relationship becomes all the more beautiful for it.<\/p><p>\u201cA Sad and Beautiful World\u201d is a film that mirrors the former Pearl of Orient: dense, intense, full of contradictions and questions, imagination and disillusionment. The cinematography and direction thus constantly and fluidly shift between different registers, different distances, and different colors, moving, for example, from grayish wide shots of the Lebanese capital to warm close-ups of faces. The direction even allows for a few sequences with a much jerkier rhythm and style, almost like music videos, where everything is swept up in an indescribable emotion so powerful it\u2019s hard to put into words. Stunning lighting effects also appear here and there to emphasize these shifts. The music, of course, plays a significant part in this. The story is at once lighthearted, dreamy, comical, and romantic, yet also heavy, depressing, dramatic, and tragic. While these intertwining and shifting tones are certainly driven primarily by Yasmina, Nino, and their loved ones, two real and\/or imagined locations also become characters in their own right. Beirut and the so-called Island indeed breathe life into and bear the scars of a cyclical, unjust, and violent world that both Nino and Yasmina love and hate, return to and flee from depending on the state of the country and their own spirits. There is, in fact, a profound poetry behind the setting created by the Island and Beirut: whether in happiness or in darkness, an unwavering beauty lies hidden, even amidst an explosion.<\/p><p>This gives rise to a metaphorical, existential, and metaphysical duality that is reflected in the very title of this film. Although it addresses and portrays situations specific to Lebanon, a certain universality emerges from this magnificent \u201csad and beautiful world.\u201d Yasmina and Nino \u2013 played with tenderness and intensity by Mounia Akl and Hasan Akil \u2013 not only represent the two sides of the same rift in the national identity of this unique Middle East country, but also embody the inner conflicts we all experience. Thus, the notions of love, family, transmission, trauma, exile (and others) are explored in a context where war and instability (both inside and outside the country) regularly leave little room for the joyful effervescence of life \u2013 which we then periodically cherish and devour.<\/p><p>This film, both beautiful and sorrowful, is ultimately a distillation of humanity that, despite our eternal struggles and introspection, urges us to hold onto hope at all costs.
