On a affaire \u00e0 un voleur qui op\u00e8re selon un strict code de conduite pour rester sous les radars sans avoir \u00e0 commettre la moindre violence. De l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, on a un flic au bout du rouleau qui est le seul \u00e0 voir ce sch\u00e9ma sous-jacent \u00e0 une s\u00e9rie de d\u00e9lits a priori seulement sympt\u00f4me d\u2019une mont\u00e9e de l\u2019ins\u00e9curit\u00e9. Et enfin, une courti\u00e8re en assurance pour de richissimes clients vient compl\u00e9ter ce trio dont les trajectoires personnelles vont toutes dans un in\u00e9vitable mur social et professionnel.<\/p><p>Bart Layton emprunte \u00e9videmment \u00e0 Michael Mann dans sa mise en sc\u00e8ne de l\u2019univers angelin souvent nocturne mais aussi \u00e0 Nicolas Winding Refn entre deux voleurs faisant respectivement penser \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0Drive\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0The Place Beyond the Pines\u00a0\u00bb. Le r\u00e9alisateur britannique signe un film de braquage \u00e9l\u00e9gant port\u00e9 par son impressionnant casting mettant en sc\u00e8ne un Chris Hemsworth insaisissable et asocial face \u00e0 un Mark Ruffalo quelque part entre son personnage de \u00ab\u00a0Collat\u00e9ral\u00a0\u00bb et de \u00ab\u00a0Task\u00a0\u00bb. Halle Berry s\u2019impose avec assurance dans ce film assez viril mais dont l\u2019intrigue tient finalement beaucoup sur la place de ses femmes avec \u00e9galement Monica Barbaro en r\u00f4les secondaire, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s notamment du vieux briscard Nick Nolte, du trop rare Corey Hawkins, et du cam\u00e9l\u00e9on d\u00e9jant\u00e9 et explosif Barry Keoghan.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26952 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5943.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5943.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5943-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5943-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5943-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un montage pens\u00e9 en amont (et h\u00e9rit\u00e9 du film choral des ann\u00e9es 2000 \u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0Trafic\u00a0\u00bb), les personnages se fr\u00f4lent permettant de construire progressivement et de relier de mani\u00e8re organique le quotidien de ces protagonistes. Beaucoup film\u00e9 de nuit, la mise en sc\u00e8ne l\u00e9ch\u00e9e privil\u00e9gie l\u2019impact physique et \u00e9motionnel sur le visage des acteurs et la lisibilit\u00e9 de la sc\u00e8ne plut\u00f4t qu\u2019un style fr\u00e9n\u00e9tique et haletant. Entre ses sc\u00e8nes percutantes de braquages et de courses-poursuites ou ses intenses dialogues agr\u00e9ment\u00e9s d\u2019une B.O. \u00e9lectro, \u00ab\u00a0Crime 101\u00a0\u00bb d\u00e9veloppe une atmosph\u00e8re sombre et tendue, un film \u00e0 la fois glamour et brut (\u00e0 l\u2019image de ce que peut \u00eatre Los Angeles). Si le concept appara\u00eet assez classique, il s\u2019av\u00e8re particuli\u00e8rement bien ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 aussi bien narrativement que visuellement.<\/p><p>Mais c\u2019est aussi gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce classicisme apparent que le film gagne en int\u00e9r\u00eat lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019aventure dans son \u00e9tude de caract\u00e8res d\u00e9senchant\u00e9s \u00e0 commencer par un voleur de haut vol d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 de sortir d\u2019une condition pr\u00e9caire qui lui colle encore et toujours \u00e0 la peau et g\u00e9n\u00e8re chez lui un imp\u00e9rieux besoin d\u2019ordre. C\u2019est pourquoi un braquage qui manque de tourner au d\u00e9sastre le trouble et l\u2019effraie autant, car il le propulse dans un monde qui \u00e9chappe \u00e0 son contr\u00f4le. Exactement comme une interaction humaine impr\u00e9vue ou non codifi\u00e9e. Le film d\u00e9veloppe ainsi ses deux relations en parall\u00e8le, l\u2019une o\u00f9 il n\u2019est pas du tout \u00e0 l\u2019aise quand il doit \u00eatre lui-m\u00eame, et l\u2019autre o\u00f9 il l\u2019est beaucoup plus quand il est dans son personnage, dans sa routine r\u00e9gie par ses objectifs et ses r\u00e8gles.<\/p><p>Le d\u00e9tective angelin est lui tout aussi bris\u00e9 et d\u00e9senchant\u00e9, son personnage n\u2019est pas en qu\u00eate de gloire, simplement d\u2019une petite victoire morale face \u00e0 une hi\u00e9rarchie qui pr\u00e9f\u00e8re la paix \u00e0 la v\u00e9rit\u00e9. Quant \u00e0 la courti\u00e8re en assurance, elle lutte pour rester dans la course \u00e0 la consid\u00e9ration, son personnage exprime une rage sociale face aux sexisme virulent au sein de son agence et au sort r\u00e9serv\u00e9 aux femmes de plus 50 ans au sein d\u2019un syst\u00e8me qui les rend invisibles (faisant \u00e9galement \u00e9cho \u00e0 Hollywood). Ce trio a priori oppos\u00e9 se retrouve donc confront\u00e9 \u00e0 une compr\u00e9hension mutuelle, celle des (d\u00e9s)illusions du r\u00eave am\u00e9ricain !<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26955 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5946.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5946.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5946-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5946-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Snapshot_5946-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Loin du film d\u2019action un peu bourrin qu\u2019il aurait pu \u00eatre, \u00ab\u00a0Crime 101\u00a0\u00bb en profite ainsi pour livrer en filigrane un discours (presque) social qui critique autant qu\u2019il idol\u00e2tre l\u2019argent. Le sc\u00e9nario prend son temps, loin du rythme de ce genre de film \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle, et d\u00e9veloppe une intrigue palpitante malgr\u00e9 ses 2h20 au compteur. Alors oui, il aurait tr\u00e8s bien pu \u00eatre plus vif et plus nerveux s\u2019il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 plus court, plus dense et plus concis. Mais ce n\u2019est tout simplement pas le ton qu\u2019il a choisi d\u2019adopter \u2013 m\u00eame s\u2019il est vrai qu\u2019on pourrait aussi dire que s\u2019il prend plus son temps, il aurait \u00e9galement pu plus creuser son discours froid et clinique sur le foss\u00e9 social, surtout dans une ville comme L.A.<\/p><p>Mais au final, que ce soit sa longueur en d\u00e9calage avec le genre tr\u00e8s codifi\u00e9 et format\u00e9 dans lequel il s\u2019inscrit aujourd\u2019hui, ou ses qualit\u00e9s emprunt\u00e9es \u00e0 d\u2019autres classiques du genre n\u00e9s avant lui (\u00e0 la \u00ab\u00a0Heat\u00a0\u00bb, qui \u00e9tait par ailleurs encore plus long), \u00ab\u00a0Crime 101\u00a0\u00bb se retrouve critiqu\u00e9 pour des raisons plus contextuelles qu\u2019intrins\u00e8ques. Le fait est qu\u2019on ne fait plus vraiment ce genre de films, et \u00e7a se voit\u00a0: un bide au box-office am\u00e9ricain, et du coup une sortie exp\u00e9di\u00e9e en <em>streaming<\/em> en France (o\u00f9 effectivement il appara\u00eetra trop lent et long par rapport \u00e0 la cadence des films de plateforme aujourd\u2019hui). We\u2019re dealing with a thief who operates according to a strict code of conduct to stay under the radar without resorting to any violence. On the other side, there\u2019s a cop at the end of his rope who is the only one to see the pattern underlying a series of crimes that, at first glance, seem merely symptomatic of rising insecurity. And finally, an insurance broker for ultra-wealthy clients rounds out this trio, whose personal trajectories are all heading toward an inevitable social and professional dead end.<\/p><p>Bart Layton clearly draws inspiration from Michael Mann in his depiction of the often-nocturnal Los Angeles landscape, but also from Nicolas Winding Refn in his portrayal of two thieves, evoking \u201cDrive\u201d and \u201cThe Place Beyond the Pines,\u201d respectively. The British director delivers an elegant heist film driven by its impressive cast, featuring an elusive and reclusive Chris Hemsworth opposite a Mark Ruffalo who falls somewhere between his characters in \u201cCollateral\u201d and \u201cTask\u201d. This is why an almost-failed heist unsettles and frightens him so much, as it propels him into a world beyond his control. Just like an unexpected or unplanned human interaction. The film thus develops his two relationships parallel to each other, one where he is completely uncomfortable when he has to be himself, and the other where he is much more at ease when he is in character, within his routine dictated by his goals and rules.<\/p><p>The L.A. detective is just as broken and disillusioned; his character isn\u2019t seeking glory, but simply a small moral victory against a hierarchy that values peace over truth. As for the insurance broker, she struggles to stay relevant in her world, her character expressing social rage in the face of virulent sexism within her agency and the fate that befalls women over 50 in a system that turns them invisible (also echoing Hollywood). This seemingly opposing trio thus finds itself facing mutual understanding \u2013 that of the (dis)illusions of the American dream!<\/p><p>Far from the somewhat heavy-handed action movie it could have been, \u201cCrime 101\u201d takes the opportunity to subtly deliver an (almost) social commentary that criticizes money just as much as it idolizes it. The screenplay takes its time \u2013 a contrast to the typical pace of this genre today \u2013 and builds a thrilling plot despite its 2 hours and 20-minute runtime. So yes, it could very well have been faster-paced and more energetic if it had been shorter, denser, and more concise. But that simply isn\u2019t the tone it chose to set \u2013 though it\u2019s true that it could also be said that if it took more time, it could have delved deeper into its cold, clinical examination of the social divide, especially in a city like Los Angeles.<\/p><p>But in the end, whether it\u2019s the film\u2019s runtime \u2013 which feels out of step with today\u2019s highly formulaic and standardized genre it belongs to \u2013 or its stylistic references to other classics of the genre that came before it (like \u201cHeat\u201d, which was by the way even longer), \u201cCrime 101\u201d finds itself criticized for reasons that are more contextual than substantive. The fact is, they don\u2019t really make this kind of movie anymore, and it shows: a flop at the domestic box office, and consequently a rushed streaming release (where it will indeed feel too slow and long compared to the pace of today\u2019s streaming films).
