comment ne pas s\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 ce bijou, premier long-m\u00e9trage du tr\u00e8s prometteur Diego C\u00e9spedes, de surcro\u00eet nomm\u00e9 en 2025 aux Goya et laur\u00e9at du Prix Un Certain Regard ? Et de regard, il en est sujet, comme l\u2019indique le titre \u2013 dont la signification d\u00e9taill\u00e9e se r\u00e9v\u00e8le tout au long de l\u2019intrigue. Nous voil\u00e0 donc dans le d\u00e9sert chilien, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 d\u2019une mine, o\u00f9 la jeune Lidia vit en compagnie de personnages hauts en couleurs qui occupent une cantina \u00e0 la fois marginale et centrale.<\/p><p>Dans ce bout du monde, il y a un bout de monde : deux communaut\u00e9s tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes (et pas toujours tr\u00e8s enclines \u00e0 s\u2019entendre) se rencontrent, se tol\u00e8rent, s\u2019affrontent aussi. La famille \u2013 parce que c\u2019est une famille \u2013 de Lidia est en effet la source de d\u00e9sirs, de crispations et de peurs pour les mineurs, \u00e0 la fois curieux et effray\u00e9s de croiser la route de la matriarche Mam\u00e1 Boa et de ses filles animales. Car la cantina abrite des maricones, des p\u00e9d\u00e9s, des travestis (aujourd\u2019hui on dirait \u00ab trans \u00bb et \u00ab queer \u00bb, mais pas \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque des faits), dans un contexte o\u00f9 ces beaut\u00e9s excentriques sont la source de rumeurs inqui\u00e9tantes.<\/p><p>Et pourtant, Lidia comme ses joyeuses s\u0153urs-m\u00e8res vivent aupr\u00e8s des mineurs et, \u00e0 l\u2019instar du genre du film, leurs interactions sont de tous ordres. Le r\u00e9cit forme un surprenant mais d\u00e9licieux m\u00e9lange de styles, alternant entre des moments hilarants et d\u2019autres d\u00e9chirants, passant de s\u00e9quences oniriques \u00e0 d\u2019autres fr\u00e9n\u00e9tiques. Le sc\u00e9nario d\u00e9veloppe en effet des inflexions inattendues qui m\u00e8nent \u00e0 des sc\u00e8nes tr\u00e8s diverses mais toujours pertinentes, et le tout dans une fluidit\u00e9 magistrale.<\/p><p>La violence sous toutes ses formes (physique, verbale, symbolique, affective) est ainsi aussi r\u00e9currente que son exact inverse : la tendresse. L\u2019histoire parle en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d\u2019amour, de cet amour qui se heurte \u00e0 l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension, aux d\u00e9calages, aux blessures, mais qui demeure malgr\u00e9 tout le fondamental liant humain, m\u00eame au milieu de rien. And it is indeed all about the gaze, as the title suggests \u2013 the full meaning of which is revealed throughout the plot. So here we are in the Chilean desert, not far from a mine, where the young Lidia lives alongside a colorful cast of characters who hang out in a cantina that is both on the fringes and at the center of it all.<\/p><p>In this corner of the world, there is a whole world of its own: two very different communities (not always eager to get along) meet, tolerate one another, and sometimes clash. Lidia\u2019s family \u2013 because it is indeed a family \u2013 is the source of desires, tensions, and fears for the miners, who are both curious and terrified of crossing paths with the matriarch Mam\u00e1 Boa and her animalistic daughters. Because the cantina is home to <em>maricones<\/em>, fags, and drag queens (today we\u2019d say \u201ctrans\u201d and \u201cqueer\u201d, but not back then), in a context where these eccentric beauties are the source of unsettling rumors.<\/p><p>And yet, Lidia and her cheerful sister-mothers live alongside the miners, and their interactions take many different turns. The narrative offers a surprising yet delightful blend of styles, alternating between hilarious and heart-wrenching moments, shifting from dreamlike sequences to frenetic ones. The screenplay indeed takes unexpected turns that lead to scenes that are highly varied yet always relevant, all presented with masterful fluidity.<\/p><p>Violence in all its forms (physical, verbal, symbolic, and emotional) is thus just as common here as its exact opposite: tenderness. The story is really about love, the kind of love that faces misunderstanding, misalignment, and wounds, yet remains the fundamental bond between people, even in the midst of nothingness. This modern quasi-western exudes a remarkable thematic, emotional, and poetic richness, making this movie a truly special gem.<\/p><p>Axel
