c\u2019est bien s\u00fbr se plier \u00e0 de potentielles r\u00e9cup\u00e9rations politiques \u00e0 travers les d\u00e9bats que le film peut ouvrir sur des centristes qui acceptent de dialoguer (voire s\u2019allier) avec les extr\u00eames afin d\u2019acc\u00e9der au pouvoir ou de s\u2019y maintenir. Et in\u00e9vitablement avec des phrases comme \u201con ne n\u00e9gocie pas avec l\u2019extr\u00eame droite !\u201d l\u2019\u0153uvre peut avoir des airs de revendication politique \u2013 d\u2019autant plus quand la sortie du film est en pleine p\u00e9riode \u00e9lectorale \u2013 m\u00eame si le sujet n\u2019est pas l\u00e0.<\/p><p>Faire un film sur collabo \u2026 c\u2019est avant tout se plonger dans l\u2019histoire, celle d\u2019un pays en plein basculement et celle d\u2019un homme entre ses convictions et ses contradictions. C\u2019est raconter sans manich\u00e9isme, raconter la complexit\u00e9 de ses personnages, raconter leur aveuglement, questionner cet aveuglement, et interroger le point de bascule pour mettre en lumi\u00e8re ce glissement de terrain progressif de fervents pacifistes \u00e0 antis\u00e9mites attentistes. Avec son titre renvoyant au po\u00e8me de Victor Hugo, \u00ab\u00a0Les Rayons et les Ombres\u00a0\u00bb montre que tout homme a deux faces, celle du bien et du mal, capable de fermer les yeux sur ce qu\u2019il se passe tout autour de lui pour \u00e9viter \u00e0 la France un sort bien pire, convaincu que la guerre ne r\u00e9sout rien\u00a0!<\/p><p>Faire un film sur collabo \u2026 c\u2019est donc retracer la descente d\u2019un homme dans les rouages sordides du r\u00e9gime de Vichy du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1930 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin de la guerre, retracer entre petits et grands arrangements une inarr\u00eatable m\u00e9canique fascisante en marche \u2026 Pour cela Xavier Giannoli se plonge \u00e0 nouveau dans le milieu de la presse apr\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0Illusions Perdues\u00a0\u00bb dans un Paris occup\u00e9 o\u00f9 les journaux sont utilis\u00e9s pour endormir les masses \u00e0 grands coups de v\u00e9rit\u00e9s pr\u00e9m\u00e2ch\u00e9es et de pure d\u00e9sinformation (tr\u00e8s mentionn\u00e9e par les agresseurs, tortionnaires et collaborateurs dans le film, comme un \u00e9cho suppl\u00e9mentaire \u00e0 notre actualit\u00e9 \u2026).<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26797 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Faire un film sur collabo \u2026 c\u2019est prendre le temps de tisser une fresque historique dense scrupuleusement document\u00e9e o\u00f9 se croisent des figures comme C\u00e9line ou Brasillach, c\u2019est prendre le temps de d\u00e9velopper un portrait de plus de 3h, et c\u2019est prendre un pari narratif en racontant l\u2019histoire du point de vue des collabo, sans humour, sans d\u00e9calage, en sachant que tout spectateur aura l\u2019histoire fran\u00e7aise sous occupation en t\u00eate. En d\u2019autres termes c\u2019est se confronter au spectateur, \u00e0 l\u2019Histoire, son \u00e9criture et sa r\u00e9\u00e9criture. Pour cela Xavier Giannoli opte pour un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 sc\u00e9naristique qu\u2019il appr\u00e9cie, le r\u00e9cit au pass\u00e9 rythm\u00e9 en voix-off ici par l\u2019unique t\u00e9moin de ce monde, la fille ch\u00e9rie de Jean Luchaire, devenue vedette \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re du cin\u00e9ma de l\u2019\u00e9poque, qui a suivi le mouvement, aveugle \u00e0 la temp\u00eate qui faisait rage \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de son monde avant d\u2019\u00eatre rattrap\u00e9e par l\u2019Histoire.<\/p><p>Faire un film sur collabo \u2026 c\u2019est ici dresser un triple portrait, ou plut\u00f4t deux doubles portraits\u00a0: d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9 le couple franco-allemand vu sous l\u2019angle de deux hommes amis pour le bien de leur pays puis d\u2019une relation entre les deux pays pour le bien de leur amiti\u00e9, et de l\u2019autre la paire p\u00e8re-fille qui restent soud\u00e9s mais meurent de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur avec une tuberculose envisageable sous l\u2019angle m\u00e9taphorique de l\u2019id\u00e9ologie nazie qui s\u2019infiltre progressivement dans leur corps \u00e0 leur insu, rongeant peu \u00e0 peu leur vie. Si le r\u00e9cit s\u2019attarde sur le personnage de la fille du collabo, en s\u2019ouvrant et se cl\u00f4turant sur ce personnage, c\u2019est que sa fonction n\u2019est autre que la transmission de l\u2019histoire, tout comme celle du cin\u00e9ma dont elle fait partie, d\u2019o\u00f9 l\u2019ultime phrase de conclusion du r\u00e9alisateur L\u00e9onide Moguy.<\/p><p>Faire un film sur collabo \u2026 c\u2019est donc dans ce cas-ci, faire un film sur la fille de ce collabo, et par cons\u00e9quent sur l\u2019h\u00e9ritage de la collaboration et son poids moral. Mais si l\u2019objectif du film se trouve bien dans la neutralit\u00e9 de son r\u00e9cit du point des collabos qu\u2019il humanise, il ne cherche pas \u00e0 les d\u00e9fendre, mais plut\u00f4t \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une certaine ambivalence, un sentiment ambigu chez le spectateur, quelque part entre pur d\u00e9go\u00fbt et sinc\u00e8re empathie. Mais pour cela le c\u0153ur \u00e9motionnel du film doit reposer sur l\u2019\u00e9volution de la relation entre le collabo et le nazi, pour ressentir le poids qu\u2019ils font d\u2019abord peser sur leur propre conscience avant de glisser progressivement et nous positionner, nous spectateurs, dans l\u2019embarras. Or, de par une structure de la trame qui facilite les ellipses, ne d\u00e9veloppe pas suffisamment l\u2019entre-deux-guerres et d\u00e9place r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement les enjeux sur l\u2019aveuglement de sa jeune narratrice, on ne peut ressentir pleinement cette \u00e9motion amorale qui rendrait le film d\u2019autant plus poignant et surtout marquant.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26796 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5910.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5910.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5910-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5910-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5910-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Car faire un film sur un collabo \u2026 c\u2019est malheureusement explorer un r\u00e9cit un petit peu sur des rails (sans (tr\u00e8s) mauvais jeu de mots) qui certes montre, transmet et raconte sans prise de position, mais aurait pu questionner et frapper plus \u2013 soit de mani\u00e8re chronologique, soit en se concentrant sur l\u2019un de ses deux angles narratifs. Le r\u00e9sultat n\u2019est pourtant pas rat\u00e9, l\u2019angle de l\u2019aveuglement, de la jeunesse et de la non-responsabilit\u00e9 est lui tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussi, mais celui du couple franco-allemand, de la volont\u00e9 de collaboration pacifiste et d\u2019une feinte ignorance \u00e0 des fins politiques n\u2019est lui pas pleinement explor\u00e9. Et c\u2019est dommage car le film b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d\u2019un excellent casting avec August Diehl (La disparition de Josef Mengele), la jeune Nastya Golubeva-Carax et un Jean Dujardin exploit\u00e9 tr\u00e8s justement \u00e0 contre-emploi pour jouer sur la sympathie que d\u00e9gage l\u2019acteur et la confronter \u00e0 ses choix ha\u00efssables pour provoquer cette dualit\u00e9 dans le personnage et cette ambivalence chez le spectateur. And inevitably, with lines like \u201cwe don\u2019t negotiate with the far right!\u201d the film may come across as a political statement \u2013 especially since its release falls right in the middle of an election season \u2013 even if that isn\u2019t the point.<\/p><p>Making a film about collaborationists\u2026 means, above all, delving into history \u2013 the history of a country in the midst of upheaval and that of a man torn between his convictions and his contradictions. It means telling the story without simplistic dichotomies, exploring the complexity of its characters, depicting their blindness, questioning that blindness, and examining the tipping point to shed light on this gradual shift from fervent pacifists to passive anti-Semites. With its title referencing Victor Hugo\u2019s poem, \u201cLes Rayons et les Ombres\u201d shows that every man has two sides \u2013 one of good and one of evil \u2013 capable of turning a blind eye to what is happening all around him to spare France a far worse fate, convinced that war solves nothing!<\/p><p>Making a film about collaborationists\u2026 is to chronicle the descent of a man into the sordid workings of the Vichy regime, from the early 1930s until the end of the war, following the small and large arrangements of an unstoppable, fascist-leaning process\u2026 To do so, Xavier Giannoli once again delves into the world of the press after \u201cLost Illusions\u201d, set in occupied Paris, where newspapers are used to lull the masses with a constant stream of pre-packaged truths and outright disinformation (frequently referred to by the aggressors, torturers, and collaborationists in the film, as a further echo of our current reality\u2026).<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26797 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5911-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Making a film about collaborationists\u2026 means taking the time to weave a dense, meticulously documented historical epic featuring figures like C\u00e9line and Brasillach; it means taking the time to develop a portrait spanning over three hours; and it means taking a narrative gamble by telling the story from the perspective of collaborationists, without humor or irony, knowing that every viewer will have the history of France under occupation in mind. In other words, it means confronting the viewer, confronting History, its writing, and rewriting. To achieve this, Xavier Giannoli opts for a screenwriting approach he appreciates, a voice-over narration in the past tense, here delivered by the sole witness to this world: Jean Luchaire\u2019s beloved daughter, who became a short-lived star of the cinema of the time, who went with the tide, blind to the storm raging outside her world before she was caught up by history.<\/p><p>Making a film about collaborationists\u2026 here is to depict a triple portrait, or rather two double portraits: on the one hand, the Franco-German partnership viewed through the lens of two men who are friends for the sake of their countries, and then the relationship between the two nations for the sake of their friendship; and on the other, the father-daughter pair who remain close but are dying from within, with tuberculosis serving as a metaphor for Nazi ideology that gradually spreads through their bodies unbeknownst to them, slowly eroding their lives. If the narrative focuses on the character of the collaborationist&rsquo;s daughter, opening and closing with this character, it is because her role is none other than the transmission of the story, just like that of cinema, which she is part of, hence the final concluding line by director Leonid Moguy.<\/p><p>Making a film about collaborationists\u2026 in this case, that means making a film about the daughter of that collaborationist, and thereby about the legacy of collaboration and its moral weight. But while the film\u2019s objective lies in the neutrality of its narrative regarding the collaborationists it humanizes \u2013 it does not seek to defend them, but rather to generate a certain ambivalence, an ambiguous feeling in the viewer, somewhere between pure revulsion and sincere empathy. But for this to work, the film\u2019s emotional core must rest on the evolution of the relationship between the collaborationist and the Nazi, so that we feel the weight they initially bear on their own consciences before gradually drifting away and leaving us, the viewers, in a state of discomfort. The result isn\u2019t exactly a failure, though. The focus on blindness, youth, and a lack of accountability is very well done, but the focus on the French-German friendship, the desire for pacifist collaboration, and feigned ignorance for political purposes isn\u2019t fully explored. And that\u2019s a shame because the film has an excellent cast, including August Diehl (The Disappearance of Josef Mengele), the young Nastya Golubeva-Carax, and Jean Dujardin, who is perfectly cast against type to capitalize on the actor\u2019s natural charm and contrast it with his despicable choices, thereby creating a duality in the character and ambivalence in the viewer. Especially since, technically, the film is very well-made, featuring an excellent period atmosphere with muted colors, including period sets, costumes, and cars \u2013 all part of one of the year\u2019s biggest French budgets at \u20ac30 million \u2013 and some truly beautiful scenes, such as the return of Napoleon\u2019s son\u2019s ashes to Les Invalides, symbolizing the handing over of power from one empire to another.<\/p><p>Making a film about collaborationists\u2026 and in this particular way, no less, is ultimately also attempting something different \u2026 much like this
