Nous sommes au c\u0153ur de la for\u00eat amazonienne au nord du Br\u00e9sil dans un endroit recul\u00e9 o\u00f9 les moindres d\u00e9placements se font \u00e0 pied ou en barque, \u00e0 travers une for\u00eat dense et moite. Dans cet environnement paradisiaque mais difficile pour ses habitants, la jeune Tielle vit du haut de ses treize ans avec toute sa famille : son petit fr\u00e8re, sa petite s\u0153ur, son p\u00e8re et sa m\u00e8re qui a d\u00e9j\u00e0 le ventre \u00e0 nouveau bien rond. Elle grandit avec des r\u00eaves d\u2019\u00e9mancipation \u2013 inspir\u00e9s par le d\u00e9part de sa grande s\u0153ur, central \u00e0 son d\u00e9sir d\u2019ailleurs et qui est justement le tout premier \u00e9l\u00e9ment mentionn\u00e9 dans le film \u2013 mais ses illusions vont progressivement commencer \u00e0 s\u2019effondrer \u2026<\/p><p>Si au d\u00e9part l\u2019on a bien l\u2019impression d\u2019embarquer dans une d\u00e9couverte (quasi-documentaire) d\u2019une communaut\u00e9 amazonienne, le film resserre progressivement (et tr\u00e8s subtilement) son propos \u00e0 l\u2019image de son titre \u00ab Manas \u00bb \u2013 qui renvoie au terme portugais utilis\u00e9 entre s\u0153urs pour se d\u00e9signer \u2013 sur des questions de sororit\u00e9, d\u2019exploitation et de violences. Cet environnement luxuriant est un \u00e9den illusoire, une for\u00eat-prison, o\u00f9 vit l\u2019une des communaut\u00e9s les plus pauvres du Br\u00e9sil dont les gamines \u00e0 peine sorties de l\u2019enfance sont afflig\u00e9es d\u2019une une double peine : m\u00eame leurs propres r\u00eaves d\u2019\u00e9mancipation (les barges) ne sont finalement synonymes que de cruels espoirs. Le film raconte ainsi un parcours f\u00e9minin qui se transmet de g\u00e9n\u00e9ration en g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, et c\u2019est par le caract\u00e8re syst\u00e9mique de cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 sociale relay\u00e9e par les dogmes catholiques (pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole et dans le cercle familial) qu\u2019il reste une plong\u00e9e dans cette communaut\u00e9 amazonienne particuli\u00e8rement frappante ! \u00ab Manas \u00bb vient alors enrichir la carte mondiale sur des faits partag\u00e9s de par le monde mais v\u00e9cus diff\u00e9remment et intimement localement.<\/p><p>Apr\u00e8s avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 plusieurs documentaires \u2013 et notamment remport\u00e9 la double r\u00e9compense de Meilleur Documentaire &amp; Meilleur Film au festival de S\u00e3o Paulo en 2012 \u2013 Marianna Brennand signe avec \u00ab Manas \u00bb son premier film de fiction sur ces questions complexes et sensibles qu\u2019elle a document\u00e9es pendant une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Cette forme \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re de la fiction lui permet de cr\u00e9er une connexion d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part en nous plongeant dans des instants fragmentaires de la vie de Tielle comme si une cam\u00e9ra documentaire la suivait. L\u2019on pourrait d\u2019ailleurs dire que le film se divise en une premi\u00e8re partie plus proche du documentaire avant de basculer dans un r\u00e9cit plus proche de ses personnages. Cette \u00e9volution se retrouve dans les choix de mise en sc\u00e8ne avec une approche au d\u00e9part tr\u00e8s naturaliste, sans aucune musique, berc\u00e9e par les sons environnants, de magnifiques couleurs et de nombreuses petites ellipses, avant de progressivement obscurcir l\u2019image, rapprocher la cam\u00e9ra de sa protagoniste de mani\u00e8re presque claustrophobique, et jouer avec les sons pour faire ressentir ce qu\u2019elle \u00e9prouve.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19539 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3500.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3500-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3500-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Snapshot_3500-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>La r\u00e9alisatrice br\u00e9silienne a trouv\u00e9 le ton juste, souvent implicite, pour raconter cette histoire avec respect et discernement. Elle fait le choix de ne montrer aucune violence d\u2019une part parce que la montrer serait une nouvelle forme de violence, et d\u2019autre part parce qu\u2019en la laissant en hors-champ, elle la rend d\u2019autant plus insupportable puisque nous n\u2019en voyons que les cons\u00e9quences sur le comportement des personnages. Le film repose ainsi sur de petits d\u00e9tails qui en disent long pour montrer ce qui est omnipr\u00e9sent sans \u00eatre frontal, et ne pas seulement faire \u00e9tat d\u2019une violence mais en reconstituer toute la m\u00e9canique. Le personnage de Tielle devient ainsi de plus en plus silencieux et sourit aussi de moins en moins, la maturit\u00e9 s\u2019imposant \u00e0 elle en oscillant entre l\u2019enfance et l\u2019\u00e2ge adulte, dans une magnifique interpr\u00e9tation de Jamilli Correa dont c\u2019est le premier film \u2013 tout comme pour la r\u00e9alisatrice qui dirigeait pour la premi\u00e8re fois des acteurs. La jeune actrice originaire de la r\u00e9gion apporte une intensit\u00e9 dans sa pr\u00e9sence et occupe totalement le plan par son regard per\u00e7ant et d\u00e9senchant\u00e9, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019une actrice professionnelle F\u00e1tima Macedo qui interpr\u00e8te le personnage complexe de la m\u00e8re.<\/p><p>Film\u00e9 avec intelligence et sensibilit\u00e9, c\u2019est un r\u00e9cit d\u00e9licat sur la violence, le silence, et le courage qui donne la parole \u00e0 une communaut\u00e9 et des femmes invisibilis\u00e9es. Tout en subtilit\u00e9 le film navigue entre l\u2019enfermement du personnage et la perc\u00e9e de l\u2019horizon avec son immense \u00e9tendue d\u2019eau et sa resplendissante for\u00eat qui finissent par devenir \u00e9touffantes. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une \u00e9mancipation perdue d\u2019avance qui dit dans un silence retentissant le d\u00e9sespoir infini de son h\u00e9ro\u00efne. We\u2019re in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil, in a remote area where even the smallest journeys are made on foot or by boat, through a dense, damp forest. In this idyllic environment, tough on the inhabitants, thirteen-year-old Tielle lives with her whole family: her little brother, her little sister, her father and her mother, whose belly is already big again. She grows up with dreams of emancipation \u2013 sparked by the leaving of her older sister, pivotal to her desire for elsewhere, which is the very first thing mentioned in the film \u2013 but her illusions gradually begin to crumble\u2026<\/p><p>While the film initially appears to take us on a (quasi-documentary) journey of discovery into an Amazonian community, it slowly (and very subtly) narrows its focus, reflecting its title \u201cManas\u201d \u2013 which refers to the Portuguese term used by sisters to refer to each other \u2013 to address issues of sisterhood, exploitation and violence. This lush environment is an illusory heaven, a jail forest, home to one of Brazil\u2019s poorest communities, whose girls, barely out of childhood, are plagued by a double burden: even their own dreams of emancipation (the barges) are ultimately nothing more than cruel hopes. The film tells the story of a feminine journey carried on from generation to generation, and it\u2019s the systemic nature of this social phenomenon, supported by Catholic tenets (at school and at home), that makes it a particularly striking insight into this Amazonian community! \u201cManas\u201d then adds a new dimension to the world map of facts shared around the globe, but experienced differently and intimately locally.<\/p><p>After directing several documentaries \u2013 including winning the double award for Best Documentary &amp; Best Film at the S\u00e3o Paulo Film Festival in 2012 \u2013 Marianna Brennand directs with \u201cManas\u201d her first fiction film on the complex and sensitive issues she has been documenting for over a decade. This approach, which lies on the edge of fiction, allows her to create a connection from the outset, bringing us into fragmentary moments of Tielle\u2019s life as if a documentary camera were following her. In fact, it could be said that the film is divided into a first part that is closer to a documentary, before shifting into a more character-driven narrative. In subtle ways, the film navigates between the character\u2019s imprisonment and the opening of the horizon, with its vast expanse of water and shining forest, which eventually become suffocating. It\u2019s the story of an emancipation lost beforehand, which speaks in resounding silence of its heroine\u2019s infinite despair.
