Andor, un adolescent \u00e9lev\u00e9 par sa m\u00e8re c\u00e9libataire, voit son quotidien boulevers\u00e9 par l\u2019arriv\u00e9e progressive d\u2019un inconnu dans sa vie. R\u00e9alis\u00e9 par L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes, connu pour \u00ab Le Fils de Saul \u00bb (2015) internationalement acclam\u00e9, \u00ab Orphelin \u00bb est un troisi\u00e8me long-m\u00e9trage historique traitant ici de sujets plus sp\u00e9cifiques \u00e0 la Hongrie communiste et d\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre, non sans drames voire trag\u00e9dies.<\/p><p>Dans ce contexte, la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 n\u2019est ni tout \u00e0 fait remise de la guerre, ni vraiment en symbiose avec le r\u00e9gime certes un peu plus r\u00e9formateur mais tout de m\u00eame pro-sovi\u00e9tique de J\u00e1nos K\u00e1d\u00e1r. La capitale danubienne porte encore les stigmates de la guerre, la sanglante r\u00e9pression contre-r\u00e9volutionnaire bat encore son plein, et les rescap\u00e9s des d\u00e9portations vivent une difficile r\u00e9int\u00e9gration dans un syst\u00e8me totalement centralis\u00e9. Andor, qui a pass\u00e9 sa jeune enfance quasi seul \u00e0 l\u2019abri des bombes, attend ainsi inlassablement son p\u00e8re qui ne revient pas.<\/p><p>Orphelin, Andor l\u2019est dans plusieurs sens ; \u00ab ils me mentent tous \u00bb, finit-il par expulser. Car, du fait de l\u2019Histoire et de son histoire emplies de secrets et de mensonges, il perd ses racines dont les quelques qu\u2019il croyait solides : sa juda\u00eft\u00e9, son innocence, ses r\u00eaves, ses amis, et peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame sa m\u00e8re. Dans ce d\u00e9sespoir croissant s\u2019\u00e9veille une violence puissante \u2013 politique, sociale et surtout familiale \u2013 que le jeune homme assimile et doit accepter.<\/p><p>Ces sentiments d\u2019affliction et de trahison se traduisent par une image pelliculaire restreinte dans son format carr\u00e9 aux nombreux plans rapproch\u00e9s (majoritairement \u00e0 hauteur d\u2019enfant) que dans ses couleurs jaun\u00e2tres l\u00e9g\u00e8rement d\u00e9satur\u00e9es. Andor, a teenager raised by his single mother, sees his daily life turned upside down by the gradual arrival of a stranger in his life. Directed by L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes, known for the internationally acclaimed \u201cSon of Saul\u201d (2015), \u201cOrphan\u201d is his third historical feature film, this time addressing issues more specific to communist and post-war Hungary, not without drama or even tragedy.<\/p><p>At this time, society had not yet fully recovered from the war, nor was it truly in tune with J\u00e1nos K\u00e1d\u00e1r\u2019s regime \u2013 which, while somewhat more reform-minded, remained pro-Soviet. The Danube capital still bears the scars of war, the bloody counterrevolutionary repression is still in full swing, and the survivors of the deportations are struggling to reintegrate into a totally centralized system. Andor, who spent his early childhood almost alone, sheltered from the bombs, waits tirelessly for his father, who never returns.<\/p><p>Andor is an orphan in more ways than one; \u201cThey\u2019re all lying to me,\u201d he finally blurts out. For, because of history and his own personal past filled with secrets and lies, he loses his roots \u2013 including the few he thought were solid: his Jewish identity, his innocence, his dreams, his friends, and perhaps even his mother. Amid this growing despair, a powerful violence \u2013 political, social, and above all familial \u2013 awakens, which the young man must come to terms with and accept.<\/p><p>These feelings of grief and betrayal are conveyed through a cinematic style characterized by a narrow square aspect ratio, numerous close-ups (mostly at child\u2019s eye level), and slightly desaturated yellowish tones. The melancholic score of the Galperine brothers also sets the tone for the journey and the ambivalent emotions of its characters, all of whom command the screen (from the mature S\u00e1ri to the resigned Kl\u00e1ra, as well as the frightening Mih\u00e1ly [played by a surprisingly Hungarian-speaking Gr\u00e9gory Gadebois] and the friendly G\u00e9za). \u201cOrphan\u201d therefore offers a portrait of a child and a country cast aside, whose wounds seem unable to heal \u2013 and it is heartbreaking.<\/p><p>Axel
