d\u2019Emily Bront\u00eb paru en 1847, ce \u00ab \u201cHurlevent\u201d \u00bb arrive pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 d\u2019une promesse ambigu\u00eb : moderniser un classique gothique en le rendant plus sexy, plus pop, plus frontal. Apr\u00e8s l\u2019excellente surprise que fut que le thriller de vengeance post-MeToo \u00ab Promising Young Woman \u00bb et l\u2019\u00e9tude de caract\u00e8res v\u00e9n\u00e9neuse et amorale \u00ab Saltburn \u00bb, Emerald Fennell adapte ici le roman ch\u00e9ri de son adolescence. Si l\u2019on n\u2019y retrouve pas n\u00e9cessairement sa patte de sc\u00e9nario qui bifurquent brusquement dans une dynamique d\u2019une toute autre dimension, on y retrouve n\u00e9anmoins ses personnages moralement troubles aux \u00e9lans destructeurs dans un univers stylis\u00e9. La sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisatrice anglaise opte pour des audacieux et assez radicaux choix d\u2019adaptation illustr\u00e9s par des guillemets encadrant le titre d\u2019une adaptation qui se veut tr\u00e8s libre, tout en conservant l\u2019essentiel de la trame du roman d\u2019origine : de l\u2019amour impossible entre Catherine et Heathcliff \u00e0 l\u2019issue tragique.<\/p><p>Certes le p\u00e8re cruel est toujours l\u00e0, mais le fr\u00e8re est d\u00e9sormais absent de l\u2019intrigue, tout comme de tr\u00e8s nombreux autres personnages faisant dispara\u00eetre la dimension revanche sociale et fantomatique du roman au profit de l\u2019amour impossible du duo central. La cruaut\u00e9 recule donc devant la romance d\u2019une part, mais la restriction de l\u2019intrigue autour de seulement quelques personnages aboutit aussi \u00e0 une version plus diabolique de cette femme d\u00e9sargent\u00e9e, narcissique et instable quand elle civilise un peu plus ce grand sauvage, monstre de d\u00e9sespoir ivre de destruction qu\u2019est le jeune palefrenier adoptif. Les maltraitances et folies des personnages se traduisent ici dans une relation tourment\u00e9e o\u00f9 les deux protagonistes se torturent sentimentalement pendant des ann\u00e9es. Il n\u2019y a pas de beau personnage dans cette histoire qui transmet cette relation toxique \u00e0 son spectateur gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 deux <em>sex-symbols<\/em> actuels qui cr\u00e9ent ce tiraillement entre des personnages profond\u00e9ment antipathiques et leurs figures romantiques tragiques.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26038 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5757.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5757.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5757-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5757-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5757-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Margot Robbie, qu\u2019on ne pr\u00e9sente plus, et qui a \u00e9galement produit le film, ne se donne clairement pas la part belle avec ce r\u00f4le profond\u00e9ment \u00e9go\u00efste et baratineur, quand Jacob Elordi (Euphoria\u00a0; Priscilla\u00a0; Saltburn) surprend par une \u00e9volution physique et vocale marqu\u00e9e. Le casting de qualit\u00e9 \u2013 r\u00e9unissant Hong Chau (Showing Up\u00a0; The Whale\u00a0; The Menu), Owen Cooper (Adolescence) et une Alison Oliver (Saltburn\u00a0; The Order\u00a0; Task) qui fait d\u00e9j\u00e0 preuve d\u2019une belle palette de jeu \u2013 adopte un surjeu volontaire qui colle au traitement tr\u00e8s adolescent de cette histoire, des dialogues aux regards pleins de d\u00e9sirs en passant par les nombreuses \u00e9treintes cin\u00e9g\u00e9niques et les musiques anachroniques de la pop-star Charli XCX.<\/p><p>Le film cherche \u00e0 casser les codes et transformer le romantisme litt\u00e9raire anglais en un grand spectacle glamour. Cela se traduit par un style extr\u00eamement color\u00e9 dans ses costumes vari\u00e9s et ses d\u00e9cors parfois assez factice, ainsi qu\u2019un montage plus rapide que ce que le rythme de ce genre d\u2019intrigues entra\u00eene g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement. Si le film ne prend pas assez son temps sur certains sc\u00e8nes (visuellement et\/ou narrativement), il offre aussi une spectaculaire photographie de Linus Sandgren (Babylon\u00a0; Saltburn\u00a0; La La Land) avec de magnifiques tableaux de paysages rocheux battus par les vents ou de d\u00e9cors tr\u00e8s travaill\u00e9s dans leur g\u00e9om\u00e9trie et leurs jeux de couleurs o\u00f9 chaque pi\u00e8ce transmet une atmosph\u00e8re distincte \u00e0 l\u2019image de l\u2019opposition entre le domaine familial plong\u00e9 dans une obscurit\u00e9 oppressante et un brouillard constant, et le domaine voisin aux couleurs vives et vari\u00e9es, deux espaces oppos\u00e9es dans un m\u00eame spectre de l\u2019irr\u00e9el, tr\u00e8s th\u00e9\u00e2tral.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26036 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5755.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5755.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5755-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5755-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Snapshot_5755-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Malgr\u00e9 quelques bonnes id\u00e9es innovantes comme une \u00e9touffante maison de poup\u00e9es ou une sc\u00e8ne d\u2019introduction tr\u00e8s sugg\u00e9r\u00e9e qui annonce directement l\u2019entrelacement et l\u2019in\u00e9vitabilit\u00e9 de l\u2019amour et de la mort dans cette histoire, cette mise en sc\u00e8ne moderne et cette sophistication visuelle masquent finalement une certaine superficialit\u00e9. Non seulement le roman semble priv\u00e9 de ses t\u00e9n\u00e8bres, mais l\u2019adaptation moderne vendue comme sulfureuse et transgressive reste aussi malheureusement tr\u00e8s prude sans emmener l\u2019intrigue dans une direction dramatique vraiment nouvelle. Au final, les personnages tous plus ou moins odieux, se torturent de mani\u00e8re assez pu\u00e9rile sans \u00e9lever tant que \u00e7a les enjeux mis en place dans une introduction assez laborieuse.<\/p><p>R\u00e9sultat, si le film nous charme visuellement, il peine \u00e0 pleinement nous emporter pour son r\u00e9cit et ses personnages, un peu \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re du \u00ab\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0\u00bb de Guillermo del Toro l\u2019an dernier o\u00f9 costumes, d\u00e9cors et photographie \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s color\u00e9s et stylis\u00e9s sans que l\u2019\u00e9motion ne s\u2019\u00e9chappe v\u00e9ritablement de la trame. Dans les deux cas, la forme prime clairement sur le fond. Ce qui pose profond\u00e9ment question lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019une adaptation tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rente de l\u2019\u0153uvre originale. Oui elle est audacieuse, assum\u00e9e et aboutie jusqu\u2019\u00e0 une fin assez r\u00e9ussie, mais reste alors la question de l\u2019utilit\u00e9 d\u2019une telle adaptation. Pourquoi garder le titre pour faire quelque chose de diff\u00e9rent\u00a0? Ou du moins, pourquoi s\u2019attacher autant \u00e0 la trame globale quand on en change autant les ressorts et aboutissants\u00a0? Le risque est alors de d\u00e9plaire autant aux amateurs litt\u00e9raires de l\u2019\u0153uvre gothique qu\u2019\u00e0 ceux d\u2019une pure romance pop.
