Trois titres (un fran\u00e7ais, un international, un original) pour un seul et m\u00eame film. Trois titres aux significations et interpr\u00e9tations tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes. Parce qu\u2019en r\u00e9alit\u00e9, ce premier, marquant, dense et d\u00e9rageant long-m\u00e9trage de la prometteuse Mascha Schilinski ne peut \u00eatre synth\u00e9tis\u00e9 en quelques mots. Si vous aviez trouv\u00e9 \u00ab Sir\u0101t \u00bb d\u2019\u00d3liver Laxe assez sp\u00e9cial, disons que vous trouverez \u00ab Les \u00c9chos du Pass\u00e9 \u00bb tr\u00e8s particulier \u2013 les deux ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9compens\u00e9s d\u2019un Prix du Jury ex-\u00e6quo lors du dernier Festival de Cannes.<\/p><p>\u00ab Sound of Falling \u00bb, c\u2019est tout d\u2019abord un film \u00e0 concept narratif \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. \u00c0 quatre \u00e9poques diff\u00e9rentes espac\u00e9es sur environ un si\u00e8cle, quatre g\u00e9n\u00e9rations et plus sp\u00e9cifiquement quatre filles ou jeunes femmes (respectivement, dans l\u2019ordre chronologique : Alma, Erika, Angelika et Lenka) traversent le temps. Leur quotidien est rempli de banalit\u00e9s \u2013 qui n\u00e9anmoins pour certaines ne le sont plus du tout avec notre regard contemporain \u2013 mais aussi d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nements plus ou moins tragiques suscitant des traumatismes profonds. Ce qui lie ces quatre femmes et leurs proches ? Leur lieu de vie : toutes habitent dans un m\u00eame corps de ferme de l\u2019Altmark (r\u00e9gion historique du nord de l\u2019Allemagne) qui se trouve \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 d\u2019une rivi\u00e8re.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25882 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>\u00ab In die Sonne schauen \u00bb a toutefois la sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 d\u2019avoir une narration incroyablement fluide voire volontairement vague : les transitions d\u2019une \u00e9poque \u00e0 une autre sont, notamment au d\u00e9but du film, difficilement identifiables malgr\u00e9 les changements de v\u00eatements et d\u2019objets du quotidien. L\u2019on peut ainsi passer des ann\u00e9es 1910 aux ann\u00e9es 1980 sans apparent trac\u00e9 sc\u00e9naristique, et l\u2019on alterne par cons\u00e9quent de fa\u00e7on irr\u00e9guli\u00e8re entre chacune des quatre g\u00e9n\u00e9rations. Un bourdonnement \u2013 autant sonore que m\u00e9taphysique \u2013 se fait cependant ressentir lors de chaque suture temporelle. Le son, justement, est de surcro\u00eet travaill\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 ce que les innombrables silences, les parsem\u00e9es voix-off et les tumultes ambiants rehaussent ce sentiment de flottement. Flottement permanent que l\u2019on retrouve autant dans les sc\u00e8nes li\u00e9es \u00e0 la rivi\u00e8re que dans ces nombreux instants de l\u2019intrigue o\u00f9 le temps semble suspendu \u00e0 une forme de d\u00e9calage, de dissonance, de tension.<\/p><p>Car sans \u00eatre fondamentalement explicite, \u00ab Les \u00c9chos du Pass\u00e9 \u00bb traite de la violence sous plusieurs formes \u2013 parfois physique, essentiellement psychique, et qu\u2019elle soit sociale, familiale ou int\u00e9rieure. Nombre de sc\u00e8nes heurtent, et non pas parce qu\u2019elles sont m\u00e9ticuleusement mises \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran (les [quasi-]hors-champ y \u00e9tant souvent pour quelque chose), mais parce les situations, les r\u00e9actions, les regards, les non-dits frappent bien plus que les actions. L\u2019image, de fa\u00e7on plus g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, en format 1,37:1, pr\u00e9sente de surcro\u00eet des couleurs froides voire ternes, et ce paradoxalement avec des mises en sc\u00e8nes tr\u00e8s picturales ; en d\u2019autres termes, certaines sc\u00e8nes sont visuellement magnifiques mais sc\u00e9naristiquement tragiques. Et l\u2019onirisme n\u2019est jamais tr\u00e8s loin, puisqu\u2019outre l\u2019exposition de certains r\u00eaves et cauchemars des protagonistes, la r\u00e9alisatrice n\u2019h\u00e9site pas non plus \u00e0 osciller entre pur r\u00e9alisme et r\u00e9appropriation fantasm\u00e9e de certains \u00e9v\u00e8nements v\u00e9cus par les h\u00e9ro\u00efnes. La place de la photographie et du daguerr\u00e9otype devient ainsi tr\u00e8s symbolique, puisque cette impression \u00ab en papier \u00bb du r\u00e9el \u00e9veille ou r\u00e9veille des souvenirs d\u00e9form\u00e9s avec le temps en m\u00eame temps que ces images.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25880 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5732.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5732.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5732-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5732-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5732-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Et l\u00e0 se trouve toute la th\u00e8se du long-m\u00e9trage (que l\u2019on retrouve plut\u00f4t bien dans son titre fran\u00e7ais) : tout environnement porte et r\u00e9verb\u00e8re les stigmates des \u00e9v\u00e8nements qui s\u2019y produisent et s\u2019y sont produits. Cette ferme de l\u2019Altmark a de fait vu se succ\u00e9der des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de personnes (en particulier des femmes) au destin quelquefois mis\u00e9rable ou du moins peu enviable et qui progressivement se sont effac\u00e9es dans l\u2019enceinte de ces murs. Or, il y a des fulgurances de certains de ces \u00e9pisodes, des d\u00e9cennies apr\u00e8s : la cam\u00e9ra incarne par moments un impalpable spectre que parfois per\u00e7oivent nos h\u00e9ro\u00efnes au d\u00e9tour d\u2019un instant suspendu. Le film joue ainsi avec une panoplie de parall\u00e8les, que ce soient dans les dialogues (un simple \u00ab C\u2019est chaud \u00bb), les mouvements des personnages (un placement de pieds) ou encore dans les relations inter-personnelles (les rapports de domination-soumission).<\/p><p>Cette impr\u00e9gnation des m\u00e9moires, des souvenirs et des traumatismes par ces divers lieux qui restent \u2013 contrairement \u00e0 ses habitantes \u2013 brouille ainsi les pistes mais instille une sensation perp\u00e9tuelle de glauque, de morbide, de troublant, de malsain, o\u00f9 la vanit\u00e9 et la mort sont des v\u00e9ritables constantes \u2013 th\u00e9matiques comme visuelles. Avec ce v\u00e9ritable et dense grain (de l\u2019image, du son, du sc\u00e9nario, des sujets, des personnages) qui fascine autant qu\u2019il d\u00e9range et ce pendant pr\u00e8s de deux heures et demie, le film nous rappelle, sans r\u00e9elle morale d\u2019ailleurs, que la vie ne vaut pas toujours la peine d\u2019\u00eatre v\u00e9cue. Because in reality, this first, striking, dense, and disturbing feature film by the promising Mascha Schilinski cannot be summarized in a few words. If you found \u00d3liver Laxe&rsquo;s \u201cSir\u0101t\u201d quite special, let&rsquo;s just say that you&rsquo;ll find \u201cSound of Falling\u201d very unique \u2013 both films were awarded a joint Jury Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival.<\/p><p>\u201cSound of Falling\u201d is first and foremost a film with a unique narrative concept. Set in four different periods spanning approximately a century, four generations and, more specifically, four girls or young women (in chronological order: Alma, Erika, Angelika, and Lenka) travel through time. Their daily lives are filled with banalities \u2013 which, however, from our modern perspective, may not seem so banal \u2013 but also with events of varying degrees of tragedy that cause deep trauma. What connects these four women and their loved ones? Their place of residence: they all live on the same farm in the Altmark (a historic region in northern Germany) near a river.<\/p><p>However, \u201cIn die Sonne schauen\u201d is characterized by its incredibly fluid, even deliberately vague storytelling: the transitions from one era to another are difficult to spot, particularly at the beginning of the film, despite changes in clothing and everyday items. We thus move from the 1910s to the 1980s without any apparent storyline, and consequently alternate irregularly between each of the four generations. However, a buzzing sound \u2013 both audible and metaphysical \u2013 can be felt at each temporal transition. The sound, in fact, is crafted in such a way that the countless silences, scattered voiceovers, and ambient noise enhance this feeling of floating. This permanent floating sensation is found both in the scenes related to the river and in the many moments of the plot where time seems suspended in a kind of shift, dissonance, or tension.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25882 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736.png 1500w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/rsgproduction.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Snapshot_5736-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p>Although not explicitly explicit, \u201cSound of Falling\u201d deals with violence in several ways \u2013 sometimes physical, mainly psychological, and whether social, familial, or personal. Many scenes are shocking, not because they are meticulously portrayed on screen (the quasi-off-screen elements often play a role here), but because the situations, reactions, looks, and unspoken words are much more striking than the actions. More generally, the picture (in 1.37:1 aspect ratio) feature cold, even dull colors, paradoxically combined with highly pictorial staging; in other words, some scenes are visually magnificent but tragic story-wise. And dreamlike imagery is never far away, since in addition to exposing some of the protagonists&rsquo; dreams and nightmares, the director also doesn&rsquo;t hesitate to shift between pure realism and a fantastical reappropriation of certain events experienced by the heroines. The use of photography and daguerreotypes thus becomes highly symbolic, as these \u201cpaper\u201d impressions of reality awaken or reawaken memories that have been distorted by time along with these images.<\/p><p>And therein lies the entire thesis of the movie (which is rather well reflected in its French title): every environment bears and reflects the scars of the events that take place and have taken place there. This farm in Altmark has seen generations of people (especially women) come and go, some with miserable or at least unenviable fates, who gradually faded away within these walls. However, decades later, some of these episodes still shine brightly: at times, the camera embodies an intangible specter that our heroines sometimes perceive in a suspended moment. The film thus plays with a range of parallels, whether in the dialogues (a simple \u201cIt&rsquo;s hot\u201d), the characters&rsquo; movements (the positioning of their feet), or even in their interpersonal relationships (of domination and submission).<\/p><p>This imprinting of memories, recollections, and traumas by these various places, which remain \u2013 unlike their inhabitants \u2013 thus blurs the lines but instills a perpetual feeling of gloom, morbidity, unease, and unhealthiness, where vanity and death are true constants \u2013 both thematically and visually. With its dense texture (in terms of image, sound, script, subjects, and characters) that is as fascinating as it is disturbing for nearly two and a half hours, the film reminds us, without any real moral, that life is not always worth living. Bleak, certainly, but undoubtedly innovative, striking, and&#8230; unique.<\/p><p>Axel
