Le braquage \u2013 le vol de quatre tableaux abstraits d\u2019Arthur Dove dans un mus\u00e9e de la banlieue du Massachusetts \u2013 n\u2019est pas tr\u00e8s bien ex\u00e9cut\u00e9, on ne sait jamais vraiment pourquoi ces \u0153uvres-l\u00e0 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisies, ni ce que compte en faire le protagoniste. Le vol devient presque, <em>in fine<\/em>, secondaire dans une trame qui se concentre ensuite sur une cavale aussi anti-spectaculaire que le casse en lui-m\u00eame. Ce qui int\u00e9resse la r\u00e9alisatrice am\u00e9ricaine n\u2019est clairement pas l\u2019acte, mais plut\u00f4t les choix qui s\u2019offrent aux personnages. Elle regarde l\u2019apr\u00e8s et scrute le basculement.<\/p><p>Nous sommes en 1970, une ann\u00e9e charni\u00e8re film\u00e9e avec un soin extr\u00eame du d\u00e9tail \u2013 d\u00e9cors, voitures, couleurs en demi-teinte, tons marron et verts, grain de la pellicule \u2013 dans la reconstitution d\u2019\u00e9poque. J.B. Mooney est un architecte rat\u00e9 devenu menuisier, p\u00e8re de famille issu d\u2019un milieu bourgeois accompli avec un p\u00e8re juge et une m\u00e8re amatrice d\u2019art. C\u2019est un personnage distant, m\u00eame avec ses proches, qui n\u2019est pas fonci\u00e8rement ambitieux, ne convoitant pas de voler des tableaux tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9s, mais plut\u00f4t ceux qu\u2019il conna\u00eet et qui lui parlent. Au ch\u00f4mage depuis quelques temps, sans avoir l\u2019air v\u00e9ritablement press\u00e9 de trouver un emploi, c\u2019est un personnage qui semble vivre en p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie de son \u00e9poque, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019il doive faire face aux cons\u00e9quences de ses actes et que son \u00e9poque ne le rattrape. La guerre du Vietnam affleure ainsi en arri\u00e8re-plan \u2013 journaux t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9s, affiches, manifestations \u2013 sans jamais devenir un moteur narratif direct, bien que son ampleur ne finisse par envahir celui qui refusait de la regarder. Comme souvent chez Kelly Reichardt (First Cow\u00a0; Showing Up\u00a0; Night Moves) il s\u2019agit moins de raconter une trajectoire spectaculaire que de capter des fragments de vie, les failles existentielles d\u2019un homme sans qualit\u00e9s, ni rebelle ni h\u00e9ro\u00efque, assez intelligent pour se mettre dans les ennuis mais pas assez pour en sortir.<\/p><p>La mise en sc\u00e8ne \u00e9pouse cette d\u00e9rive int\u00e9rieure en changeant plusieurs fois de tons \u00e0 travers une dimension burlesque dans le premier acte qui dispara\u00eet progressivement au profit des cons\u00e9quences plus s\u00e9rieuses qui s\u2019imposent aux personnages. Reichardt laisse le temps s\u2019installer, parfois au risque de l\u2019ennui, assumant pleinement un film o\u00f9 \u2018il ne se passe pas grand-chose\u2019 dans de longs plans fixes panoramiques \u00e0 la composition raffin\u00e9e et dont les rares dialogues \u00e9tirent les sc\u00e8nes. La bande-son jazzy, presque incongrue dans cette Am\u00e9rique p\u00e9riurbaine, injecte une vitalit\u00e9 paradoxale \u00e0 un r\u00e9cit qui semble se dissoudre sous nos yeux.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0The Mastermind\u00a0\u00bb est ainsi un film de casse sans casse, un drame sans pathos, une trag\u00e9die sans h\u00e9ros. Reichardt d\u00e9tourne les codes du genre pour imposer une fois encore son regard tendre et d\u00e9sabus\u00e9 sur les marges du r\u00eave am\u00e9ricain. Si elle ajoute l\u2019humour \u00e0 son style dans des sc\u00e8nes d\u2019apparence anodines pour finalement le faire se d\u00e9rober lentement, c\u2019est que l\u2019on regarde en fin de compte moins un film de braquage qu\u2019un \u2018film de Kelly Reichardt\u2019. Elle impose v\u00e9ritablement sa marque, son style en faisant rentrer le film de casse dans son cin\u00e9ma et non l\u2019inverse. The heist \u2013 the theft of four abstract paintings by Arthur Dove from a museum in suburban Massachusetts \u2013 is not very well executed; we never really know why these particular works were chosen, nor what the protagonist intends to do with them. In the end, the theft becomes almost secondary in a plot that then focuses on a manhunt as unspectacular as the heist itself. What clearly interests the American director is not the act itself, but rather the choices facing the characters. She looks at the aftermath and examines the turning point.<\/p><p>The year is 1970, a pivotal year filmed with extreme attention to detail \u2013 sets, cars, muted colors, brown and green tones, film grain \u2013 in the period piece. J.B. Mooney is a failed architect turned carpenter, the father of a family from an accomplished bourgeois background with a judge for a father and an art lover for a mother. He is a distant character, even with his loved ones, who is not inherently ambitious, not coveting to steal highly prized paintings, but rather those he knows and which resonate with him. Unemployed for some time, without looking particularly eager to find a job, he is a character who seems to live on the fringes of his time, until he has to face the consequences of his actions and his time catches up with him. The Vietnam War indeed looms in the background \u2013 on the news, on posters, in demonstrations \u2013 without ever becoming a direct narrative driving force, although its scale eventually overwhelms the man who refused to acknowledge it. As is often the case with Kelly Reichardt (First Cow; Showing Up; Night Moves), it is less about telling a spectacular story than capturing fragments of life, the existential flaws of a man of no particular qualities, neither rebellious nor heroic, intelligent enough to get himself into trouble but not enough to get himself out of it.<\/p><p>The direction reflects this inner drift by changing tone several times, with a burlesque dimension in the first act that gradually disappears in favor of the more serious consequences that befall the characters. Reichardt allows time to pass, sometimes at the risk of boredom, fully embracing a film where \u2018not much happens\u2019 in long, refined, static panoramic shots, with sparse dialogue stretching out the scenes. The jazzy score, almost at odds with this suburban America, injects a paradoxical energy into a story that seems to melt away before our eyes.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Mastermind\u201d is therefore a heist movie minus the heist, a drama minus the pathos, a tragedy minus the heroes. Reichardt subverts the conventions of the genre to once again impose her tender and disillusioned look on the margins of the American dream. If she adds humor to her style in seemingly innocuous scenes, only to slowly let it slip away, it&rsquo;s because we&rsquo;re ultimately watching less of a heist movie and more of a \u201cKelly Reichardt movie.\u201d She truly imposes her mark, her style, by bringing the heist movie into her cinema and not the other way around. From this point of view, it is a coherent and challenging piece, which will appeal to some with its formal sophistication, while leaving others cold with its deliberate slowness.<\/p><p>Rapha\u00ebl
