Olivier Assayas y prolonge, vingt-cinq ans plus tard, son propre film \u00ab\u00a0Irma Vep\u00a0\u00bb (1996), lui-m\u00eame d\u00e9j\u00e0 relecture des \u00ab\u00a0Vampires\u00a0\u00bb (1915) de Louis Feuillade. Un remake d\u2019un remake, donc, mais surtout une mise en abyme vertigineuse o\u00f9 chaque couche de fiction dialogue avec les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 en faire surgir les fant\u00f4mes.<\/p><p>Assayas transpose son dispositif dans un format s\u00e9riel qui lui permet d\u2019\u00e9tirer, de fragmenter et de contaminer les niveaux de r\u00e9cit. On y suit Mira, star internationale incarn\u00e9e par une Alicia Vikander magn\u00e9tique, venue en France pour tourner une nouvelle adaptation des \u00ab\u00a0Vampires\u00a0\u00bb. Tr\u00e8s vite, la s\u00e9rie se d\u00e9ploie comme un film sur une actrice, sur un film en train de se faire, sur le cin\u00e9ma en tant que langage et en tant qu\u2019art menac\u00e9. Les langues s\u2019entrem\u00ealent (fran\u00e7ais, anglais, parfois sans transition), les formats aussi : images restaur\u00e9es de Feuillade, extraits du \u00ab\u00a0Irma Vep\u00a0\u00bb de 1996, sc\u00e8nes du tournage fictif, making-of int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 la fiction, noir et blanc, couleurs fun\u00e8bres ou presque spectrales. La s\u00e9rie joue avec les images, les sons, le muet, les silences, comme pour rappeler que le cin\u00e9ma est avant tout une mati\u00e8re vivante, instable, travers\u00e9e par l\u2019histoire.<\/p><p>Ce vertige formel n\u2019est jamais gratuit. Il accompagne une r\u00e9flexion caustique, parfois satirique, souvent auto-critique, sur l\u2019industrie du cin\u00e9ma contemporain : la standardisation des r\u00e9cits, l\u2019obsession des franchises, la peur du risque, les contraintes assurantielles, la difficult\u00e9 m\u00eame de faire exister un projet singulier. Les passages \u00e0 travers les murs, la figure vampirique d\u2019Irma, la sensation que les personnages sont hant\u00e9s par des r\u00e9cits pass\u00e9s conf\u00e8rent \u00e0 l\u2019ensemble une atmosph\u00e8re \u00e9trange, parfois d\u00e9routante, mais coh\u00e9rente dans sa logique spectrale. Les fant\u00f4mes du cin\u00e9ma, des r\u00f4les, des identit\u00e9s se croisent dans un Paris devenu carrefour culturel et m\u00e9moriel. La question de l\u2019appropriation, de l\u2019identit\u00e9 (Irma Vep, personnage historiquement asiatique, incarn\u00e9e ici par une actrice su\u00e9doise) est m\u00eame discut\u00e9e frontalement, la s\u00e9rie se permettant de se contredire, de se questionner elle-m\u00eame, sans jamais chercher une r\u00e9ponse d\u00e9finitive.<\/p><p>Au c\u0153ur de ce labyrinthe, Alicia Vikander cr\u00e8ve litt\u00e9ralement l\u2019\u00e9cran. Assayas lui offre un espace de jeu rare, la laissant interpr\u00e9ter son personnage \u00e0 travers plusieurs strates, plusieurs chronologies, plusieurs cadres. Mira se confond peu \u00e0 peu avec Irma \u2013 son nom en anagramme, annon\u00e7ant cette fusion progressive \u2013 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 une renaissance intime. Autour d\u2019elle, Vincent Macaigne, en r\u00e9alisateur n\u00e9vros\u00e9 de la s\u00e9rie dans la s\u00e9rie, finit par appara\u00eetre comme un double \u00e9vident d\u2019Assayas, rendant la d\u00e9marche \u00e9tonnamment personnelle, presque confessionnelle. Sans oublier un riche casting secondaire compos\u00e9 de Lars Eidinger, Adria Arjona, Devon Ross, Jeanne Balibar, Vincent Lacoste et Nora Hamzawi notamment, dans des r\u00f4les \u00e9tonnants voire inhabituels pour certains.<\/p><p>Dense, parfois exigeante, \u00ab\u00a0Irma Vep\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019a sans doute pas la dimension addictive attendue des s\u00e9ries contemporaines. Mais elle compense largement par son audace, sa libert\u00e9 et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 se r\u00e9inventer sans cesse. Dr\u00f4le, \u00e9mouvante, m\u00e9ta, visuellement sublime, \u00e0 la fois l\u00e9g\u00e8re et profond\u00e9ment r\u00e9flexive, elle s\u2019impose comme l\u2019une des \u0153uvres s\u00e9rielles les plus originales du moment. Twenty-five years later, Olivier Assayas follows up on his own film \u201cIrma Vep\u201d (1996), which was itself a reinterpretation of Louis Feuillade&rsquo;s \u201cLes Vampires\u201d (1915). A remake of a remake, then, but above all a dizzying <em>mise en abyme<\/em> in which each layer of fiction interacts with the previous ones, until ghosts emerge.<\/p><p>Assayas adapts his concept to a serial format, allowing him to stretch, fragment, and blur the narrative layers. We follow Mira, an international star played by the magnetic Alicia Vikander, who has come to France to shoot a new adaptation of \u201cLes Vampires\u201d. Very quickly, the series unfolds like a film about an actress, about a film in the making, about cinema as a language and as an endangered art form. Languages intermingle (French, English, sometimes with no transition), as do formats: restored images by Feuillade, excerpts from the 1996 film \u201cIrma Vep\u201d, scenes from the fictional shoot, a making-of integrated into the fiction, black and white, funereal or almost spectral colors. The series plays with frames, aspect ratios, sounds, silence, and pauses, as if to remind us that cinema is above all a living, unstable medium, steeped in history.<\/p><p>This stylistic vertigo is never pointless. It supports a sharp, sometimes satirical, often self-critical reflection on the contemporary movie industry: the standardization of stories, the obsession with franchises, the fear of risk, insurance constraints, and the sheer difficulty of bringing a unique project to life. Characters passing through walls, the vampiric figure of Irma, and the feeling that the characters are haunted by past stories give the whole thing a strange, sometimes disconcerting feel, but one that is consistent in its spectral nature. The ghosts of cinema, roles, and identities intersect in a Paris that has become a cultural and memorial crossroads. The question of appropriation and identity (Irma Vep, a historically Asian character, played here by a Swedish actress) is even discussed head-on, with the series allowing itself to contradict and question itself without ever seeking a definitive answer.<\/p><p>At the heart of this puzzle, Alicia Vikander is absolutely outstanding. Assayas gives her a rare opportunity to play with her character across multiple layers, timelines, and settings. Mira gradually merges with Irma \u2013 her name spelled backwards, hinting at this gradual fusion \u2013 until she experiences an intimate rebirth. Around her, Vincent Macaigne, as the neurotic director of the series within the series, ends up appearing as an obvious double of Assayas, making the approach surprisingly personal, almost confessional. Not to mention a very strong supporting cast with Lars Eidinger, Adria Arjona, Devon Ross, Jeanne Balibar, Vincent Lacoste et Nora Hamzawi in surprising, even unusual roles.<\/p><p>Dense and sometimes demanding, \u201cIrma Vep\u201d may not have the addiction factor expected of modern TV shows. But it more than makes up for this with its audacity, its freedom, and its ability to constantly reinvent itself. Funny, moving, meta, visually exquisite, both lighthearted and deeply reflective, it stands out as one of the most original series of the moment.
