Dans une campagne bien isol\u00e9e des dynamiques de modernisation que conna\u00eet l\u2019Empire du Milieu depuis les ann\u00e9es 1970, le jeune Chuang constate avec acuit\u00e9 les profonds changements et d\u00e9calages que conna\u00eet son village. Ours d\u2019Argent de la Meilleure R\u00e9alisation \u00e0 Berlin en 2025, \u00ab Le Temps des Moissons \u00bb d\u00e9peint une Chine \u00f4 combien \u00e9loign\u00e9e du mod\u00e8le promu par P\u00e9kin, de sorte que le film, pourtant initialement autoris\u00e9 par le gouvernement \u00e0 concourir en festivals internationaux, n\u2019a toujours pas de date de sortie dans son pays de production. Et ce n\u2019est pas surprenant.<\/p><p>Tourn\u00e9 sur une ann\u00e9e enti\u00e8re et d\u00e9crivant litt\u00e9ralement un \u00ab lieu de vie \u00bb (titre original en mandarin) au milieu de ce qui semble \u00eatre partout et nulle part, \u00ab Le Temps des Moissons \u00bb est un long-m\u00e9trage \u00e2pre et terriblement d\u00e9primant. Car, \u00e0 travers les yeux de Chuang mais pas uniquement, c\u2019est toute une triste histoire et un profond sentiment de mis\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat pur qui sont mis \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran. \u00c0 commencer par l\u2019existence m\u00eame de Chuang, troisi\u00e8me rejeton de ses parents n\u00e9o-citadins contraints de le cacher \u00e0 la campagne et ne pas l\u2019avoir d\u00e9clar\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat civil afin de ne pas payer une seconde amende pour non-respect de la politique de l\u2019enfant unique. Mais si seulement il n\u2019y avait que \u00e7a\u2026<\/p><p>Compos\u00e9 en chroniques d\u00e9solantes de la vie pastorale, le film narre et d\u00e9veloppe une panoplie de personnages et de sous-intrigues o\u00f9 l\u2019extr\u00eame pauvret\u00e9 est reine. De l\u2019absence notoire de technologies modernes (\u00e0 l\u2019exception d\u2019un seul t\u00e9l\u00e9viseur, d\u2019un seul tracteur, d\u2019un seul camion) au poids \u00e9crasant des traditions presque d\u00e9su\u00e8tes qui oblit\u00e8rent le malheur des villageois (les enterrements, les mariages, le Nouvel An) en passant par des trajectoires personnelles marqu\u00e9es par des contraintes insurmontables (les maigres r\u00e9coltes, le manque d\u2019argent, les arrangements n\u00e9goci\u00e9s, le vieillissement, le handicap), tout parle de mis\u00e8re. Et ce avec une photographie picturale et un montage arythmique qui renforcent ce sentiment \u00e9prouvant d\u2019une lente et \u00e9puisante transition vers un avenir pas si radieux. Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Direction at Berlin in 2025, \u201cLiving the Land\u201d depicts a China that is so far removed from the model promoted by Beijing that the film, although initially approved by the government to compete in international festivals, still has no release date in its home country. And that\u2019s not exactly a surprise.<\/p><p>Filmed over an entire year and literally describing a \u201cplace of life\u201d (original title in Mandarin) in the middle of what seems to be everywhere and nowhere, \u201cLiving the Land\u201d is a harsh and terribly depressing film. Through Chuang&rsquo;s eyes, but not only through his, a sad story and a profound sense of pure misery are brought to the screen. Starting with Chuang&rsquo;s very existence, the third child of his neo-urban parents, who were forced to hide him in the countryside and not register him with the civil authorities in order to avoid paying a second fine for non-compliance with the one-child policy. But if only that were all&#8230;<\/p><p>Made up of dismal chronicles of pastoral life, the film narrates and explores a range of characters and subplots where extreme poverty reigns supreme. From the glaring absence of modern technology (with the exception of a single television, a single tractor, and a single truck) to the crushing weight of almost obsolete traditions that obscure the villagers&rsquo; misfortune (funerals, weddings, New Year&rsquo;s Day) to personal trajectories marked by overwhelming constraints (meager harvests, lack of money, negotiated arrangements, aging, disability), everything speaks of misery. And this is achieved with pictorial cinematography and arrhythmic editing that heighten the harrowing feeling of a slow and exhausting transition toward a not-so-bright future.
